Bought this as the first prime lens for my new Pentax K-5 system. The first thing that struck me when I used it was how noisy the auto focus was. Guess years of Canon USM has spoiled me. After that auditory shock though, it was all uphill. The focusing is spot on on my K-5, and it is sharp from wide-open as far as I can tell. The Bokeh is nice too - much better than the Canon EF 50 F/1.8. But then that lens is half the price!I like the build and the design of the lens... solid plastic and compact. The plastic mount doesn't bother me... but yeah for $ + one could expect a metal mount. But we are paying for the Pentax clarity and contrast...both of which are there in loads. I think the bigger decision for potential buyers should be this against the trusty Pentax FA 50 F/1.4. You can get used copies of the same for the cost of a new 50 F/1.8. I decided for the new 1.8 because I believe that technology becomes better with time. Why buy old when one can buy new? ;) So far - haven't been disappointed.

It is noticably soft wide open, so don't buy it for the speed. It's decent when stopped down to f2.8; by f5.6 it's as sharp as anything. Auto focus is VERY loud but quick.

The lens mount is plastic so I doubt it would stand up to heavy use. I honestly don't have a problem with the rest of the plastic. Structurally it seems sturdy enough, and plastic is probably more thermally stable than metal anyway. The mount though, should be a little tougher, in my opinion.

This one was included with the K-3 by B&H, so I'm grateful to have it and it will see some use, but overall it isn't as good as other normal primes. I'd say it's worth having in the bag just because it weighs next to nothing.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I bought this as my first prime lens for my new K-3 II. I am very impressed with the quality of the optics, especially considering the wallet-friendly price. Sure, the body and mount is plastic, but if it does have a plasticy feel at all, it's a quality plasticy feel. The focus ring moves smoothly and has a large range of motion so you can finely set the focusing. The autofocus is good using the in-body focusing mechanism (though it does bring out the loudness of the body motor).
The picture is definitely soft at wide aperture, but as other reviewers said, it improves significantly by f/2.8 and by f/5 (or lower) it's perfectly sharp.
If you're looking for a lightweight, reliable lens to keep on your camera, you can't go wrong with this lens considering the price. I would give it 4.5 if I could because of the wide open softness, but I think the economical price compensates.

Was able to use this lens throughout a Bat Mitzvah party in low light and with only a small beauty dish on my flash. Captured crisp photos throughout the event - in manual mode, of course.

Great lens at special price which is just 50% of local retailer price in Hong Kong. Great saving making it irresistible considering one year warranty is really not essential in Hong Kong.

Outstanding Value!

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens has exceeded my expectations. It's fast, it's good against the light, with no visible flare or ghosting. It's VERY light in weight, and it was extremely cheap. It may be good on full-frame, too: I tried it on an old film camera and could not notice any vignetting in the viewfinder.

On the minus side, it's all plastic construction, including the bayonet mount. And it has no aperture ring, so you couldn't use it on an old manual camera.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

When stopped down to f/5.6 to f/8, this lens is sharp and contrasty to the corners of the K-1 full frame.  That's a pleasant surprise given the low price.

Sharpest Lens I own

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

When I purchased my Pentax K3 this lens was included as part of the package. I am glad it was, because, it truly takes some of the best pictures of all the lenses I own. It has the best contrast, sharpest edges, and absolutely no purple fringing at any points in the frame. It is so affordable I fall into the trap that it can't be that great of a product. You have heard it a thousand times..."You get what you pay for". Well...don't be fooled...this is an outstanding lens. I have lenses that cost over $1K that do not produce the details that this lens produces.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

I have been using only kit lines for a while, a friend told me to invest in at least a 50mm or 85mm.
I started with the 50mm and WOW the difference in my photo, they so much sharper. I used it for the first time in a night cityscape and put let my friends see it, and a few of them wants it printed out for wall art.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

For someone like myself just learning photography, this lens is awesome. It gave me a chance to explore my DSLR even further with little investment. Will I buy a better and more expensive lens in the future? Yes. But for now I'm still learning and this lens is just fine.

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

Shooting with the 50mm was reminiscent of the film days when I shot only with fixed focal length lenses. I had a blast using this lens which was surprisingly sharp considering the cost. For me this is a keeper!

Cons

  • Loud Focus
  • No Included Lens Hood
  • No Weather Resistance
  • Plastic Mount

Best Uses

  • Indoors/Low Light

  • Weddings/Events

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This lens is quite sharp and provides great bokeh.
For $89.00 this is a must have piece of glass!

The downsides are.
1. Plastic Mount
2. Loud focus
3. No included lens hood
4. No weather sealing

All that being said if the above items were included or corrected with this lens it would not cost $89.00. So I must say that it is a great value and IQ is great for the money spent.

StartUr Prime

Comments about Pentax smc DA 50mm f/1.8 Lens:

This is a great starter prime lense. It's an inexpensive tool to help teach you how depth of field works in addition to working with less light than my other lenses can handle. I use it for portrait and urban photography. The autofocus may be slow and noisy, but I usually manually focus anyway. I'd recommend this for amateurs and novices like myself.
