I still have the original Airport express and it's chugging away nicely. I moved into a new apartment with very bad wave propagation so I got this extend the range. I use a 3GB time capsule (also a very cool router) as my main router. The elegance of an Apple product is hard to deny. I plugged in this router. Launched the airport utility. It automatically sensed a new airport. It asked me if I wanted to create a new network or if I wanted to extend my existing (something sadly the old airport express doesn't do) et voila! It was connected to my existing network in about 2 minutes. So headache free!

A couple of selling points over the old version. You can now extend an existing network rather than just join. It supports 2.3 and 5ghz simultaneously.

I originally purchased an time capsule because I like that the backup capabilities (although I wish Apple would let you set the interval for backups, I don't need to backup continuously). Additionally, I needed more than a single ethernet port for 2 network printers and an NAS. If all I had was a single computer and a single printer this would have been my first choice.

Now I just use my old unit to stream iTunes to my big stereo, or when I travel.

All in all a great product. I purchased from B&H because unlike some other online retailers, they ship really fast, even if it's free shipping and their customer service if you ever have an issue is bar none the best.

In a homogeneous Apple OS X/iOS enviroment, this compact, elegant unit is a breeze to set up either as a primary access point or to extend existing WiFi service. Bandwidth, range, and connection robustness all met my expectations. However, perhaps because it is so easy to configure on an Applecentric local network, Apple doesn't publish detailed information about the implementation of its protocol support or offer embedded or standalone diagnostic tools that might be helpful in resolving issues in a heterogeneous environment; the customer's only recourse is a call to Apple technical support (whose reps probably won't have a clue about integration with "foreign" products) or searching the online Apple forums (where the quality of the advice is dubious). I had no difficulty getting this product to extend the range of another Apple WiFi base station, but after considerable effort finally gave up trying to configure a Google Chromecast dongle to talk to it. Admittedly, the Google product had just been released and had a number of known connectivity issues. But more technical information from Apple about the Airport Express might have permitted me to resolve the problem.

Comments about Apple Airport Express Base Station:

For a basic configuration of desktop iMac and wi-fi to the iPad and iPhone, the Airport Express does the job exceptionally well. Set up is done through the AirPort Utility ap. No bells or whistles, just simple reliability.

Needed to extend my existing home network which is one Airport Extreme & multiple Airport Expresses used as extenders.
Plugged this in & gave it the SSID to join & the password & it pretty much set itself up and was up & running in less than 10 minutes.

Another Fantastic Apple Product

Comments about Apple Airport Express Base Station:

OK...So I'm an Apple fan through and through.  Might the reason be everything was easy to set up?  Might it be that both the AirPort Extreme and Express give me great coverage in a difficult floor plan?  Yes, oh yes to both.  Triple the signal strength and consistent coverage throughout.  Can't believe the rumor that Apple is discontinuing this equipment.  Am I missing something?  Please come to your senses Apple people.

Comments about Apple Airport Express Base Station:

I have had this product for about 2 weeks. Out of the package the Airport Express found and connected to my network. I wanted and use this product to extend my network from my basement office to the main floor of my rancher. The signal is strong and I have not experienced any problems.

Even better than the original

Comments about Apple Airport Express Base Station:

I've been a fan of the Airport Express access points for a number of years and when one of my two "original" units decided to go to "AP heaven", this was the logical replacement. I'll not likely wait until the other "original" unit gives up the ghost to upgrade to one of these new versions, either. The increased wireless frequency support as well as dual radio design is very much in line with our needs here at home. Yes, it doesn't do 801.1ac, but wireless in our home is for utility with mobile devices...important applications are wired connections.

Works great after some troubleshooting!

By Jim

from Charleston, SC.

Comments about Apple Airport Express Base Station:

This is my 2nd Airport Express, returned the first one, only to have exact same problems.
After setting up with AirPort utility, had to manually put in DNS server numbers, and unplug my cable modem before it would work right. Not sure if this is something with the Airport or my cable modem.
For use with an X32 digital mixer, had to change IP settings and change Gateway to 0.0.0.0 on the X32.
I assume this is why lots of X32 users have trouble using an AirPort Express for remote control using iPad/iPhone apps. Works great after some troubleshooting! :)

I purchased this product to help specifically with my AppleTV device. It ran slow on my centurylink wifi device and did not seem to work correctly. A friend told me that once he purchased the Apple Airport his AppleTV issues when away. I agree with him that I can now load movies and stream my pictures thru AppleTV much smoother. Not sure why but it works.

Airport Express is amazinlgy simple to setup. There are 3 steps, connect to power, connect LAN and then watch for green light. Everything else is taken care by the device. You have auxillary iphone and mac application that is used to administer this device as well. If you have a predominantly apple devices based household then this is a definite addition.
