I've been using this lens with my D600 for the past year. I've gotten some outstanding shots, but I started to wonder if I'm loosing something on my full frame 24mp. So I rented the flagship 24-70 f2.8 and shot about 1000 shots over a weekend. I'm happy to say that this cheaper Nikon is as good as the more expensive one for 95% of shooting situations. You may not get the glorified corner-corner sharpness, but then again who really needs that all the time? The VR delivers sharper results indoors, and lower noise with lower ISO. The bokeh is high quality, esp 85mm / f4.5. I was expecting dramatically better sharpness, color rendition, and bokeh in the 24-70 f2.8 but I just couldn't find it. On top of that, this lens feels like a feather in your hand, never really weighing down your shooting. The downsides of this lens are massive barrel distortions @24mm, but that can be corrected with one click in Lightroom.

I purchased this lens when I switched from dx to fx. I had a Tamron 70-200 2.8 for fx but didn't have any fx wide-standard lenses. Got this lens for my d750 for an ok price. I don't know where to start with this lens... I have a love/hate relationship with it. I will first make my short, to-the-point statement about it: it is a decent alternative to the 24-70 2.8 if you don't want to buy a professional lens, but if you are a professional photographer/cinematographer, DO NOT GET THIS LENS. Prosumers, and ametuers alike will appreciate the decent bokeh balls this lens renders, as well as its light weight and versatile focal range. The vibration reduction does help when handholding with slow shutter speeds, but I almost always find myself worrying about motion blur in my image moreso than camera shake when in low light areas. I will admit, I have gotten alot of nice images while using this lens. But as most experienced, professional photographers will tell you, it is the photographer that makes the image, not the gear. The gear is only supposed to help the photographer capture the desired image, and I will tell you this lens does the opposite of that! When shooting around 24-35mm, there is alot of distortion and makes the image appear quite funny-looking. Also a good note: if you want to use this for landscape photography, you can forget about that! The center sharpness is mediocre, but the side and corner rendition is horrid! At 24mm, the sides and corners distort, blur and are completely unsharp. I actually was unable to deliver certain photos taken at 24mm with this lens for an important job I did because you could not clearly see the subject in the pictures (which was located towards the bottom right corner of the frame). Now here is my biggest complaint which for any professional photographer is a deal-breaker. This is a variable-aperture lens, meaning when you zoom out wide to 24mm, the lens's iris has a maximum setting of f/3.5. As you zoom in towards 85mm, the aperture is quickly limited to f/4, then 4.5. Even though I hate shooting with variable-aperture lenses, whenever I do, I always keep the aperture at its largest constant setting for the entire zoom range. Meaning for this lens, I always have the aperture set to f/4.5, that way I can set exposure with shutter speed and ISO, and won't have to worry about my exposure changing when I zoom. After a while of using this lens, I noticed that even while shooting strictly at f4.5, the lens STILL looses light as you zoom in!!! This can be observed when using it on a dslr with auto ISO setting; as you zoom in, the ISO slowly increases to maintain the same exposure no matter what aperture setting you have set. This is my biggest complaint about this lens, it is the worst thing to shoot an event, and come home to proper-exposed wide angle shots but the 50mm and beyond shots are 1.5-2.5 stops underexposed! The auto focus is ok, not great, and doesn't focus in low light well. Overall, this is a great lens for consumers or anyone who doesn't shoot in manual mode, and is not a professional photographer that cares about the things listed above. It is a decent performance for the price, but beware all the issues described above!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

Excellent lens for my travel kit. Light weight, small yet sharp with VR helping on low light use. Has some barrel distortion but easily fixed in RAW processing workflow. Easily half the weight, size and cost of 24-70 2.8 lens. I do travel w the 70-200 2.8 and appreciate not having the extra weight.

Great lens, much improved over the older 24-85 2.8. VR works great, and is even lighter than it's predecessor. Great lens for someone looking for something in between a standard kit lens and the very expensive 24-70

Great for DX

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

The Nikkor 24-85, f:3.5-4.5, is a Full Frame lens but I got it for my Nikon D5300. The lens has been corrected for center quality. And indeed its image quality on the half frame sensor of the D5300 is quite outstanding. The lens is razor-sharp across the whole image frame and at the edges or corners there is no visible distortion or light fall-off. Zooming is smooth and ranges are well spaced. Because of the 1.5 crop factor the lens behaves very much like a 35-135 zoom, covering classical wide-angle to proper telephoto. I paired the Nikkor with the Tokina 12-28 ,f:4. A most useful combination!

The Nikkor comes with a very effective VR. For me, 1/4th of a second even at the telephoto end of 85mm, is possible. Also close focus at 38cm throughout the full zoom range comes in handy.

The lens feels solid. However with these modern lenses, something you cannot see may go wrong. Like AF, VR or  the zooming mechanism. It has happened to me for previous lenses, some known build like a tank. But Nikon gives you peace of mind with its five year warranty.

While I cannot judge the lens on a full frame body, I think it is a great choice for DX shooters.

Very sharp lens. I use it on my Nikon D7000, a DX camera, so it is more like a 35mm-120mm zoom. Would have been nice it it goes down to 18mm or so for my DX camera. Focusing is accurate and instantaneous (and silent).

A steal for the price

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

There are all kinds of great and not so great reviews of this lens. When a couple of pros say it's as good as the 24-70 F2.8 just not as fast and then another says the lens is a disappointment to him makes me think it is a great lens with a few bad copies floating around. I bought this lens from B&H for my D7200 and was excited about the image quality I was getting. After using the lens about 2 months a spot started appearing in the upper middle right hand corner of my pictures. I called B&H and they sent out another new lens to replace mine. To my amazement the second lens was even sharper and had better color than the first lens. I have not had any spots appear in my latest copy and the picture quality is unbelievable. I hope it does as well on my new Nikon D750 when I get it. Bottom line this is a great lens if you have a good copy and B&H will see to it that you get a good one. I think quality control was a big problem the first few years this lens was made.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

I love this lens! It was was purchased for a D7200 instead of one of the kit lens offered. The range of focal lengths is close to perfect, the resolution is truly amazing, VR works as well as one could hope, and color rendition is oh, so lovely! If that's not enough, I believe its range makes me a more thoughtful, and intentional photographer.

Great lens for the money

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

Got this lens from B&H before a trip after reading many reviews. Didn't have a lot of time to try it out and test it, but I liked its zoom range and thought it would be the right all-around lens for everyday use. Plus, I have another NIkkor VR zoom that has given me some great results with the VR function.

I've been in Istanbul for the past week using the lens on a DX camera. When I brought the first few batches of images into Lightroom I was really impressed by the detail this lens captured. Some photographers prefer thorough technical analysis of a lens' performance, but for me, I've always relied on my eyeballs whether under a loupe in the 'way back' days before digital, or zoomed in with Photoshop or Lightroom today. And I have to say, this lens wowed me right out of the gate. Looking at images 1:1 in LR I was impressed with the lens' ability to distinctly capture separate hairs in a portrait, or the fine texture of a fabric, or fibers in a piece of fruit.

Others have cited the lens' relative slowness wide open, but I try not to use most lenses wide open anyway so this doesn't really trouble me. Today's image sensors offer incredible ISO's with little compromise in quality so the only way this really comes into play is for photographers after creative use of shallow depth of field. Some have also had problems with the zoom ring but my copy turns smoothly without feeling 'loose'.

I'm really happy so far with the results of this lens and am looking forward to using it on an FX camera in the future.

Outstanding lens

By NHK

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens:

This lens is tack sharp and auto focus is fast. I read the reviews for a few years and most often the zoom ring was said to be very tight. I found this not to be true. The zoom ring is smooth throughout the zoom range. I will admit that it isn't as smooth as my Nikon 70-200 F2.8 but that is an internal zoom that doesn't move the lens back and forth, the lens stays the same length.
In my opinion this lens is outstanding. The VR works great.
