I was concerned that this grip would turn out to be flimsy and cheap in construction and function. Most of these "off brands" are, however I was delighted to discover the quality built into this product. Right out of the box it looked and felt good and subsequent installation proved my observation correct. An additional concern, would I need to disassemble the grip in order to access both batteries and a routine basis, but the default setting initiates the grip bound battery as the first to be used and the onboard battery as secondary - sweet. The layout of controls is excellent as is the additional multi-selector built into the grip - nice engineering. Of concern is the occasional blink of the green light on the body - don't know why it occurs - no big deal but a little disconcerting - manual says that's normal.I can heartily recommend this product - rest assured, you'll love it!

Do not buy this thinking it a direct replacement for the Nikon unit. It is NOT. This unit fit nicely. It did work in that it does run the camera as advertised. It is also larger in every dimension than the nikon. Not a little bit, around a quarter inch bigger. What this means is that no "L" bracket from any of the major makers can work with this item! The battery tray can thus not be removed without actually taking the bracket off. The door cannot be opened to connect cables as the additional height means it mis-aligns the brackets. Had this been a true clone of the nikon size it would be quite nice. For most professional uses I do not recommend it. Should a purchaser never intend to mount this to a tripod it is a fair buy.

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

I bought this as a replacement for another 3rd party grip that I had knocked the locking mechanism off the battery compartment. That particular grip continued to work fine, but I was concerned at some point the battery would fall out since it was not locked in any longer.

The Vello grip seemed to be of even better build when I received and looked more like the Nikon grip that I use on my other D810. At first it powers up fine and all functions work. Then about 15-30 minutes after it is on, all goes south. The shutter speed and aperture dials fail to work and the focus point toggle fails to function. It will still focus and fire, but without the dials and toggle, what's the use. I'll be putting back on my old grip with broken battery lock and hoping for the best. Try and save up enough money for the the Nikon grip instead.

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

I have a Vello grip on my Nikon D610. Has worked without problems for two years. That led me to purchase a Vello grip for my D810. Looks great. Feels like a quality grip that belongs on the D810 body. I think that's an important aspect of a grip at least for me. Even though it's an accessory I want it to feel like the camera came that way. If that makes sense. The grip draws down well to the camera feels sturdy. Buttons functions nicely. Helps balance the camera out in my opinion.

Exactly As-Advertised

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

This grip costs about 1/4 of what the OEM version costs. Does it perform as-advertised? This is my second copy of this grip, for use on the same model camera each time. (both D800E's) Both versions have worked impeccably. Does this grip have the weather-sealing the OEM Nikon version has? Nopers. Does the owner of a Nikon D800/E often use their camera in conditions that would require such weather-sealing? None that I know or have spoken with. Certainly not I.

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

Without question, Nikon makes the most durable gear for DSLR's at this time. I've owned semi-pro & pro-grade Nikon's for over a half-decade now, and I put my gear through its paces. (I've been a full-time working photographer since 2010) Getting to the point: I first bought a D800 in August 2014, which I updated a month later for a D800E. Then I looked at the Nikon grip, and for nearly 1/4 the price I went with the Vello knock-off through B&H. I found it to be perfect for my needs. It may not be as weather-sealed as the Nikon version, but if you're out photographing in adverse weather conditions with this camera either A) you can afford the Nikon grip and/or can afford to replace it, or B) you need to see someone who can explain to you about using the right tool for the task. I sold that camera with grip in the Spring of 2016, now I've bought another version of the D800E. I immediately ordered the exact same grip within a week or two. Both versions I've had work as flawlessly as I need them to.

Happy shooting!

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

I have this attached to a D800 and it works as it should with no issues what so ever. I will say that it's not as solidly built as my MBD10 that's on my D300S. I can actually see the Vello twist ever so slightly if gripped from the opposing end where I can't make the MBD10 twist any, even when I tried to twist it. I am satisfied with the purchase.

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

After barely using it for a week, I have come up with the following. . .

It looks identical to the Nikon MB-D12. When you actually handle it though, you realize it is made from plastic instead of the metal, that the Nikon seems to be made from. That said, it is very good quality plastic, and it feel very solid. The input controls click with the same authority the MB-D12 does (I have a D800 with the MB-D12), and the focus button and shutter release have a nice pressure point. The multi selector also feels very nice, with no play in it.

It will be interesting to see how this holds up compared to the actual MB-D12 which I've had for almost five years now, and has a nice patina to it.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I've only had it for a week and I have no idea about its longevity. I cannot stress enough that the initial quality feels very good.

Connection Problems

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

I used my first grip for 2 years and liked it, but it started experiencing a problem with its electrical connection to the camera after about 1.5 years. I bought a second grip two months ago to see if my fist grip was defective, but this new grip has the same problem. When I slightly put pressure to twist the grip on the camera, it notice that the "BP" message (indicating a problem) comes and goes. I am thinking the problem is within the battery compartment itself, but it also could be in the connector that attaches to the camera. It is hard to tell. Has anybody else had this problem? Is it the grip or the camera? The grip problem actually does not interfere with the operation of the camera whatsoever. It just means that it does not draw power from the grip, so I have to take off the grip every time to charge the internal battery, as the grip battery is not always consumed. I also wonder if it is bad to continuously take off the grip as I don't want to damage the grip connector on the camera. Any suggestions would be appreciated apart from the obvious of buying the authentic Nikon grip for the steep price.

Fits nice Blends well doesn't work that well

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

The battery grip fits as nice as it has to and blends well with the camera body. However the main function of the grip is not useful. The battery in the camera drains along with the battery in the grip, not as fast but it definitely drains, which defeats the purpose of having a battery grip. I could not in good conscious recommend this grip to a friend.

Doesn't last

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

This grip was part of a B&H package with the purchase of my D800. I had immediately disliked the new configuration with it only holding one battery (the Nikon is the same but older ones had both batteries in the grip)

However, I can no longer use it as the batteries do not register. The first sign was the batteries could not last for a full shoot without draining. Yet when I pulled them out they still would have 25% power. I had read that the camera could have trouble identifying non-nikon batteries, so I purchased more Nikon En15 batteries. Yet after loading new fully charged batteries the camera read them as dead. Other times it would register but I would lose battery extremely fast on shoots. When I would go replace them with the charged back ups they registered dead.  I thought at first it could be the batteries but after removing grip the camera registered the battery and it lasted the full amount of time I expected. However I can't keep going with just one battery, so looking for deals on the Nikon grips.
While the Vello seems like a great deal, especially when purchasing with a new camera body, but in the long run it will cost you more in time, frustration and money.

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

I am giving this grip 5 stars because I bought it together with my D810 and it worked great for two years. I bought my camera in July 2014. In May 2016 I started getting an occasional error message on the D810 in the form of [Err] and the camera would not work at all. This week, I realized that the Err message would immediately go away after the grip was removed. I still question whether it was the grip or the battery inside the grip causing the problem. Unfortunately, an issue like this is not easy to pinpoint. I am not quite sure if I should replace the grip or replace the batteries at this point.

This is the second Vello Battery Grip that I have purchased from B & H, the choice was really a 'no brainer' due to the previous grip purchased for my D610. I call it 'Price Performance' ... quality, performance, reliability, all tie together in this grip that is comparable to the OEM Grip that sells for more than double the price.

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

This is the worst product that I have ever bought from B&H (Vello). The grip drains the battery, it is not a sturdy product. When attached to the camera it wiggles. I do not recommend this product. Going forward I will only use Nikon products.

Problem

By Edward

Verified Buyer

Comments about Vello BG-N7 Battery Grip for Nikon D800, D800E & D810:

This particular battery grip is defective. With charged batteries in both the camera and the BG-N7 grip, the camera will not power up. The grip IS attached properly as the green light demonstrates. Likewise, the camera does not turn on with a battery in the grip and no battery in the camera. Oddly though, the paired unit does function properly when there is a battery in the camera but no battery in the grip.

I've been using vertical battery grips with all my Nikon cameras during the past 13 years with no problems.
