I purchased the first version of this lens from B&H in January. While it was still under the return period the version ii was announced.I returned the original and waited "patiently" for the ii.It took a while but when it was finally announced I think that I was probably one of the first to place an order.I did order it early in the morning on the announced sale day. There was absolutely nothing that I could find wrong with the original but the addition of a motor will come in handy for my back-up D40.I usually take my pictures at night and this lens performs beyond my expectations I'll attach a couple of pics that I have taken with this lens. Bear in mind that I am an amature photographer so the image quality would probably be better in more capable hands

I purchased the newer Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 because I was looking for an DX alternative to my Nikkor AF-S 14-24 mm f/2.8 for such occasions where I want to travel lighter or need to attach a filter. It is possible that I expected too much because of the mostly positive reviews I read, and/or that I was too critical in my evaluation of this lens because it is not a Nikon product. Either way, after two exchanges I am still not entirely happy with my third sample but I decided to keep it because it works well for me for landscape and travel photography, which is what I use it for. Also, I know what I've got but don't know what I'll get if I exchange it a third time because every new sample I have had was different from the previous one except for the fact that they all were sharpest at f/5.6-f/9.0 at any focal length.

The first sample was what I would describe as the most "balanced" of the three in terms of resolution. Center sharpness was usable at f/2.8. Border sharpness was not as good as center sharpness at all focal lengths, and very disappointing at 11 mm, especially at f/2.8. The resolution was generally best at f/4 - f/8, particularly at 16 mm. The second sample lacked center sharpness at all apertures and focal lengths, which led me to believe there may have been a focusing problem. My third sample is not usable wide open at any focal length. However, resolution increases remarkably at 4.0, and from f/5.6 - f/11 the lens displays very good to excellent sharpness across the frame at all focal lengths. I am also very pleased with the color rendition.

Even though I am quite satisfied with my lens when I use it in the f/5.6 to f/11 aperture range, I can only give it a 3-star rating because of its underperformance at f/2.8 and - for this product in general - the sample variations.

Good wide-angle for indoors/parties

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

I am amateur and so far I am pleased with this purchase. I am using it on a Nikon D300s. Noticing the backfocus on first experiments, I resorted to AF fine-tune dialed to -15 and it seems to be fine. Tested with SpeedLight SB700 for evening/night open-air party. Good use case for the camera. Focal length was ideal, staying on wide end and occasionally on the long end. f/2.8 came in handy in low-light condition and for freezing action. Quality of images look good. I'd be cautious for purchasing this lens for a camera with no AF fine-tune though. 3 stars for requiring an adjustment on my camera. None of my other, all NIkon lenses requires adjustment. Otherwise, I'd gladly give 4 starts.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

Bought this lens a couple of weeks ago, As usual service from B&H was impecable. The lens works as advertised with a Nikon D7000. Constructions appears to be solid without sloppiness on the controls.

It does not have the sharpness of Nikkor lens but the quality of the pictures is more than reasonable. It would be ludicrous to expect hyper high sharpness throughout the entire frame in a wide angle lens. Many reviews I read mention that no filter should be placed on the front of the lens because it will produce vignetting at 11mm. It may be of use to potential buyers of this lens, to know that I bought, elsewhere, a Rangers Pro 77mm UV filter - 1.8mm Ultra-thin that fits perfectly on this lens an produces NO vignette even at 11mm setting. No visible difference on pictures taken with and without this filter. I would recommend his lens to a friend.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

As the owner of a crop-body camera (Nikon D5500) I bought this lens to try to get wider shots.  It worked well for that.

Later when I upgraded to a full frame D600, I was pleased to find that I could CONTINUE to use this lens in FX mode if I kept the lens set at 16mm.  Sample shot with the D600 uploaded.  Great astrophotography lens.

Why not 5 stars?  I wish it had less flare in bright light.  Not an uncommon issue for the super-wides but still a hassle.  Manage your light and positioning and you should be fine.

Just a great value.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

Although the main reason that I originally bought this lens (the Perseid meteor shower) was literally 'obscured by clouds'. Its so sharp and fast that I know I'll be using it a lot for landscape and city shots. Still haven't gotten used to the push-pull focus mode selector, or the zoom and focusing rings being inverted from Nikon lenses.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

I bought this lens specifically for wide astrophotography. This is the only DX lens I could find with the fast 2.8 aperture. It allows me to photograph the Milky Way at a reasonable ISO. The focus scale in invaluable when shooting at night. The feel is solid and smooth, and the mounting ring is metal, not plastic. Like.

The Tokina 11-20mm 2.8 is an excellent lens. Very wide and the extra 4mm over the 11-16mm version is useful for my particular application. Great alternative to the pricey Nikon ultra-wide.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

I chose the Tokina lens because it had such great reviews and a great price. But I also read once in awhile there's a bad one. I guess I got one of the bad ones. I did some tests and found the focus/sharpness was of very poor quality. Not acceptable. I'm returning it.

I got my lens wright on the day you sais in good shape . I have used it several times and it is SHARP
from conner to conner. It's very good in low light as well in bright light . I use it on a Nikon 5200 on auto
focus to test. Very happy and the price is good for this super wide auto focus. The Tokina 11mm to 16
is more bang for your buck...

    Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

I've heard mixed reviews about the Tokina 11-16mm ATX 116 PRO DX ii, but I have to say I have been very pleased with it. VERY PLEASED.
I have not had any problems so far and the lens is tack sharp. No back focusing issues for me at all. I auto focus until it locks and then I switch to manual focus inside of my camera (especially when shooting long exposures).
The lens is great for getting super close to something in the foreground and going wide. I think that is one of the the keys to this lens. This lens will make things in the frame look tiny if you don't add something for scale in the foreground.
At 11mm there is some barrel distortion, but @ about 13-14 mm to 16mm there is pretty much none.
I have also used polarizing filters and have not faced any crazy patterns or anything like that. You just have to know where you are when it comes to the angle of the sun.
Vignetting has not been too much of problem so far. I did get some @ 11mm with two filters stacked.
I'm using ultra thin models which include UV filters, Polarizer, ND Grad, and ND filters. I would stay away from stacking filters though.
The filter brands that I'm using are:
    Haida
    Zomei
    Hoya
The Zomei filters have the lowest profile of the bunch. I have the Schott glass with Multi coating models and they seem to work well and do not affect the image.
I do get some flares when shooting into the sun.
The lens hood helps keep the flaring in check. Over all I really enjoy this lens. They price is just right and it's a fun lens to play with. I'm glad I purchased it here from B&H. Got a fair price and it came with a 3 year warranty (No warranty for most listings on eBay & was about the same price as the lens is here on B&H). Also came with 3 day expedited shipping which was a bonus :)

    Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon F:

I've owned 3 copies of this lens thus far. The first had to be returned because of a pre-existing scratch on the front element (I assume that it was caused by the loose lens cap that had been rattling around inside the box during the shipment process..) The second lens was sold after 1 year of use because the threaded filter portion of the lens suddenly began to rattle without any explanation. I have owned this 3rd copy for a few months now and I have only been able to use it a handful of times. This morning I discovered that the zoom ring spins a full 360 degrees with no stopping point. This is after a handful of LIGHT photo excursions. The lens was never mishandled, dropped, etc. Is the lens sharp? Yes. The photo quality is great for the price. There always seems to be a tradeoff however. It seems to me that this particular line of lenses suffer from a series of random and frustrating cosmetic/mechanical failures that the consumer should not have to worry about. Next time I will spend the extra coin and purchase a Nikon, or equivalent, lens that won't plague me with these problems.
