I have been using this lens with the X-E1 (purchased as the kit) for the last month and have taken several hundred shots. All together I feel confident in saying this is a fantastic zoom, with a very useful range (27-82.5mm in 35mm equivalent).

The lens is quite bright for a "kit" lens (though it isn't really a kit lens, not in the traditional sense - the image quality is much higher than that), and I've found that even wide open the lens produces very high quality images - sharp, contrasty, and full of that Fuji color and rendering that I love so much (and which compelled me to get the X-E1 in the first place). The Optical Image Stablization (OIS) on the lens works very well - although I need to note that I can hear the OIS working, at least when the X-E1 is set to have OIS on continuously (rather than just when shooting). The noise is minor, but there, and in a perfectly silent environment could be noticeable. But you can disable it with a switch on the lens itself.

Compared directly with the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 (which I also bought): The 18-55mm is longer and heavier, and does extend when zooming (though not when focusing). The 35mm f/1.4 is sharper from f/2.8 and up, and capable of thinner depth of focus (thanks to the faster aperture), so you can throw more of the background out of focus. But on looking over many shots from a recent trip, I can't easily pick out which I took with the 18-55mm and which I took with the 35mm (except when it was very dark out, at which point I switched to the faster 35mm, despite the lack of OIS). I think this speaks to the quality of the 18-55mm - the image quality it produces is comparable to a very well regarded prime. At 18mm it is especially good; it is only at the max 55mm length that you probably will want to stop down to achieve max sharpness.

All I all I highly recommend this zoom if you are in the market for a versatile lens to add to your X-mount collection. As part of the X-E1 kit this is a no-brainer - get it. On it's own, for the X-Pro 1 or if you got the X-E1 body-only, I still see this as a flexible lens for all those times when you don't have the time or ability to switch out your primes - or if you just want to buy one lens that does most everything in the standard range. Match this with the 35mm f/1.4 and you have a heck of a set.

The copy of this lens is soft, tested on a solid tripod with the OS off against both the 18mm f2 and the 35mm f1.4 and it's not even close to the same performance. I did a quick decentering test and it clearly has some issues in that reguard. I've read reviews that said 2 out of 3 copies they tested were so decentered they couldn't test them. I mailed it back for repairs, Fuji said there is nothing wrong and just sent it back. BEWARE and test your copy as soon as you buy it and be ready to go through several of these before you get a good one. A lens this expencive should have better QC..

Not perfect but good enough

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

What is photography without compromises? I will take the smaller size and sharp optics of this lens and sacrifice the constant aperture and weather resistance of the 16-55.
Thats not in any way to belittle the quality of this lens. Its really, really good.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I moved from Nikon D610 to this camera mainly because of chronic back problem. Nikon with its lenses was getting too be too heavy for me. Fuji XT-20 with this lens is just what I needed. This lens is just so amazing. I do not feel the need for primes for this range.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

Purchased this lens for my X-T10 after returning the Fujifilm XF 16-55 2.8 (it was too heavy). This is much lighter and balances well with my camera. Images are sharp & have good contrast with great color. Feels solid and seems very well made. I love it as an all around lens for going on vacation, or just most of my general photography.

Surpasses My Expectation, By Far!

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

A+++ lens! Owning the XPro2 and X-T2 plus Fuji's 5 fastest X primes, I rented the Fuji 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR for scouting a recent client project. I was extremely happy with those images, but not that lens' bulk, weight, and the lack of stabilization (especially for 4k video). After reading a ton of positive reviews for this 18-55mm 'kit' lens, I bought it with the intention of returning it if it wasn't close to 'pro' standards. And I've since been amazed by the stunning sharpness, build quality and compact size of this tiny gem. It far surpasses my (sold) Canon 24-105L, and matches my wonderful Sigma ART 24-105 in image quality. I'm a pro with 30 years shooting advertising, and this wonderful Fuji lens is anything but 'kit'. So now it's always mounted to one of my two bodies, with the other body switching between f/1.2 & 1.4 primes. And what a steal, because I waited and bought it with the X-T2 and Battery grip for $1999 from B&H, so this lens was almost FREE!! And I will never miss not buying that hulking 16-55 beast, ever!

A pleasant surprise

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I was expecting a slight loss of sharpness compared to a prime lens, but this zoom is a pleasant surprise, especially in the middle apertures. It's not quite as sharp as the 23mm prime, but viewing images at full frame reveals no discernible difference. The zoom range is useful. Not quite an ultra-wide or long zoom, but very handy when you can't take a few steps backwards or forward.

A Kit Lens to Rule them All

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

You don't always expect a "kit lens" to be that sharp and amazing, but compared to every other kit lens I've used, this one is by far the best. Great stabilization, good sharpness across the board, especially in the optimal f stop range. It's so small and light, it's great for a casual carry around lens.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

Got this to work with the Pro2, I'm just a one-lens person. It seems really sharp, and is a nice size and weight for the camera. The zoom is just enough for landscape or portraits. Together they feel smaller and tougher that a DSLR. Got rid of the Sony AR7II body as I couldn't find a Sony / Zeiss lens like this. Happy.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I've had this lens for a bit over six months, and used it quite a bit. The "wise men" of the Internet will tell you that this is a variable-aperture zoom, built to a relatively low price point as a kit lens for some of the less expensive mirrorless Fujis. I suppose that's all true, but I find that this lens is well built and sturdily constructed, with optics that are far better than implied by the pejorative "variable aperture kit lens." Sure, the aperture does vary, but it's f/2.8 at 18mm and only loses a stop to f/4 at 55mm. And this lens clearly demonstrates that a variable aperture lens can deliver excellent performance at all focal lengths, and at most apertures. (I haven't used it much stopped down past about f/11.) I have plenty of top-quality glass to compare with, including Zeiss, Nikon pro level and Sigma ART (obviously not all designed for Fuji XF) and this little gem is definitely not embarrassed in that company. The OIS is quite effective, and while the focus speed on my X-T10 is not "blazing" or equivalent to the Nikon pro sports lenses, it is certainly not an obstacle to getting the shot. There is a mild amount of pincushion distortion easily visible in the viewfinder, but correction is automatically applied in Lightroom (I shoot raw), so it's never an issue.Sure, it's not an f/1.4 prime, and no, it doesn't match a purpose-designed macro prime lens for sharpness, but what zoom lens does? As a compact, very high quality and useful lens, this succeeds masterfully. Highly recommended unless you're really in the market for ultra-fast primes.

Have found the OIS works and has allowed me to take low light hand held pictures that I would miss with my 5D. Easy to carry around, fit and finish are good.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

This is really much better than the usual low-end stuff that comes as a kit lens with cameras. Picture quality is good - certainly good enough for casual travel use, which is why I picked up this for use with an X-T1 (and also a 12-24).

Two shortfalls, hence the four stars: 1) the lens cap is pretty hopeless - this will be replaced with the excellent Nikon equivalent in short order, and 2) as a kit lens being sold with the weather-sealed X-T1, why hasn't the lens been upgraded to weather-resistance? How hard could it be? The weather-sealed zoom alternatives, the 16-35 and 18-135 are either too big/heavy or too big, slow and of lesser image quality for my needs, respectively. I'd have happily paid more for this lens if it was weather-resistant. Still, I made the decision to get both this and the 10-24 with my eyes open, and don't regret it.

Really takes you back to the film days. I like the convenience of a zoom and this one doesn't disappoint. It's pricey unless it's part of a kit but I think it's worth it.

I've been using pentax, olympus and nikon 80's- 90's era manual focus prime lenses with my XT-1 and have been happy with the output and user experience yet there are just times when autofocus, stabilisation and the ability to "zoom with your fingers" just can't be beat. The fit and finish of this lens is superb and the feel of the zoom, focus and aperture rings feels like a well judged combination of fluid and mechanical damping. The image quality is above reproach and I just don't feel the variable aperture has been any sort of drawback in my experience. The one thing that I would like to point out is that it isn't the best standard range zoom lens for close up applications- the minimum focus distance isn't super close therefore the reproduction ratio isn't very high but in light of how enjoyable this lens has been for me to use it has been worth every penny to me!

Comments about Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Zoom Lens:

I bought this as the higher-end kit lens with my XT-10. I use it in general purpose photography, ranging from night shots, portraits, indoor shots of pets and kids, and especially my semi-pro work shooting photos to tell the stories I utilize in my work at an advocacy nonprofit. I've always preferred prime lenses, but this is my first Fuji camera and I wanted a little flexibility while I built my kit. For the price, it was a really good decision.

It's by far the best kit lens I've ever seen on a mirrorless camera. I don't like variable aperture on lenses as a rule, and this lens, while fast, is not an exception. It's annoying to see my exposure go to ruin when I zoom, especially in lower lighting. But I get it. Constant aperture zooms cost crazy money. I'll take the compromise.

And this lens sweetens the bitter pill significantly. First, it's so incredibly solid and well constructed. On Fuji's beautiful art piece cameras, it fits in very well. It's a pleasure to use, with smooth rings and cool metal grips. The build quality is just unlike any other kit lens I've seen. And it's really very sharp at almost any aperture, throughout the image. Lovely images, especially in daylight. Autofocus is nice too - not quite brilliant, but quick enough.

I've rated the lens 5 stars because it was $300 with my camera. At that price, it's a complete steal - way cheaper than buying it separately. But while its super well built and good overall, I don't think it's a perfect lens.

Besides the variable aperture, I think the aperture ring is just a tad too easy to turn. I've bumped it on accident a few times without noticing and found myself shooting at 5.6 when I wanted to be at 4. Not a deal breaker. And you wouldn't expect perfected bokeh on a max f2.8 kit lens, but I'll mention it anyway - the bokeh has slight hexagonal edges if you're looking for them. Again, not a deal breaker. And it's heavy - I don't care about that, but you might - like any nicer zoom lens will be.

I'll be happier using a couple of fast primes instead of this kit, and I think that's true of most photographers. If you have any decent, flexible fuji lens, skip this one for now and put the money toward primes...or whatever you want. (Unless you just LOVE zooms and have a small budget.) But if you can snag this with your kit at the vastly reduced price, do it.

This is not the 3.5-5.6 cheaper alternative kit lens. This lens is solid and the image quality is excellent. It has Optical Image Stabilization. I'm not too crazy about the protruding zoom element though. Size wise, this lens is a darling to the point you'd want to hug it! It has no slippage as the action is buttery tight. This is not cheap either!! Try it in a kit for big savings! Plus, B&H service rocks!
