For those of you trying to decide between the 14mm f/2.8 and the new 16mm f/1.4 I say this: When I reach for an Ultra-Wide, I'm not going for super buttery background blur. I'm also not particularly interested in shooting Ultra-Wide portraits. This lens balances minimal distortion with with lots of great DRAMA, if positioned carefully. f/2.8 is plenty fast for most applications, and again, when I'm shooting wide I'm generally shooting at f/5.6 - f/16 anyway to get as much in focus as possible.

This little guy is a gem; distance markings, push-pull focus ring, and 58mm filter ring. After dark, I reach for Fujifilm's 23mm or 35mm primes. I'm a manual shooter, and paired with an X-T1, this lens is a manual shooter's dream. See attached samples.

i held off from purchasing this otherwise fine lens because of all the reviews commenting on the loose aperture ring. I decided against the Zeiss lens because of the rubber aperture ring and the climate in Thailand would not be kind to it.

Right from the get go I missed a few shots because the aperture ring slipped from 'A' to f/22. Best advice I can give is constantly check the aperture and hold it there!
If you are not a stickler for detail, then this might not matter, however it annoys me. The lens was purchased from B&H and is now in Thailand, so I won't be returning it.

Hopefully if enough people complain, Fugi will eventually fix the aperture ring so it does not move so easily.

For the above stated reason I gave it three stars and will not recommend it.

I No Longer Covet Zeiss

By Steve

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

I've been on the hunt for great 90 degree FOV glass for many years, knowing that Zeiss is the standard by which all others are judged. Having used Nikon 20mm AI, 20mm AF-S and Nikon wide zooms and tested several others including Loxia 21mm, I can safely say that this XF 14mm is the best of it's kind that I've used.

Superb Lens - best 21mm equivalent I've used

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

I left Sony and this was one of the lenses that influenced me. The Loxia 21 is exemplary, but manual focus and expensive. This lens is it's equivalent in every way rendering sharp, aberration-free images from wide open. There is no hesitation in using this lens at all. Some have complained of loose rings and such in the past and this might be true or it might happen over time. But from the box, this one has been just right - not too stiff, not too loose and certainly no wobbling or slipping.

The wide angle lens you need for your xt-1

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Light, small sized for an ultra wide angle. Very very sharp edge to edge. I almost bought the Samyang manual focus f2.0 lens for my XT-1 instead of this, but since the price drop this one is a no brainer pick.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Sturdy and well made, this lens renders incredibly sharp images. I was worried it was going to be a larger lens but it's smaller than you might expect. A great addition to your Fuji lens collection.

It's a YES

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

I initially bought the XT-1 camera with a 18-135 zoom lens because, as a very happy owner of the Fuji X100s, I felt the need for a longer, more versatile lens that would get me where I needed when "zooming with my feet" was impossible. Having just been shooting in the Highlands of Scotland, the 23mm lens of the X100s felt limiting--zooming with my feet would have meant falling off cliffs! I'm v ry happy with the 18-135 but needed/wanted a wider angle lens. I was between Fuji's 14 and 16, and had planned on renting one of them for an forthcoming roadtrip. A fabulous offer from B&H made the idea of renting ridiculous: for $200 more dollars, this lens could be mine. Color reproduction, in Fuji fashion, is astonishingly good. I love that there is no barrel distortion. It does beautifully with long exposures, night shots, anything I put it through. My one gripe is not with Fujifilm (or is it?) but with Adobe, as I find LR5 falls way short in developing the RAW files of this camera. The lens profile is not recognized in the Lens Correction tab, just as the 18-135. That's the only caveat I have for the XT-1, with any lens.

Great little lens but..

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Good sharp photos, allowing for good wide angle. and allows for decent macro work. The one thing that I did not like is that it has no locking aperture priority mechanism like other Fuji lenses. While trying to manually adjust focus, you can accidentally move the aperture setting.

It is a keeper

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

I purchased my first Fujifilm XF14mm f2.8 R just before going on a trip to Israel. It has a magnificent wide view, equivalent to 21 mm in 35 mm format using a 1.5 multiplication factor. It has a metal body that is solidly built and is well balanced on my Fujifilm X-E2 camera. I knew I would put it to good use when taking pictures of the ruins and topography of the land.

I was very impressed and happy with it until it stopped focusing in the heat of the day. My other Fuji lenses continued to work in the heat of the day, but not this wide-angle lens. Indoors, away from the heat of the sun, it worked great. This failure probably had something to do with the electronics.

When I returned home I returned the lens as defective. Because it was already over a month old the seller returned only 80% of the purchase price. Then I discovered the same lens on sale at B & H for $499, half the price I originally paid. I made the purchase and came out way ahead on the deal.

The new lens works perfectly. It produces crisp, bright, gorgeous images which I like very much. Auto focus is quick. However, the aperture ring operates smoothly but needs more friction because it is easily dislodged from the A mode when carrying it.

The focus system operates in a different manner from the other lenses in the Fuji lineup. The focus ring has two positions. To focus manually, you pull the ring back towards the camera. This operation uncovers a distance scale. Push the ring forward and it locks in auto focus position and will no longer rotate. Focus is electronically driven in either mode. Auto focus is quick, with no searching back and forth.

The plastic petal-shaped hood will reverse on the lens, making for good storage. Be aware that while using the camera's flash the hood creates a shadow across part of the picture. Always remember to remove the hood when taking flash photos.

This lens is a genuinely wideangle, high quality prime lens.

Really an outstanding lens

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Before digital, I frequently used Leica rangefinders in addition to Nikon, then Canon, SLRs. While I used the 35mm and 50mm Summicrons extensively, the 21mm was the other lens I used most often. This 3-lens outfit served me well for years and I only sold that equipment when the ease and quality of digital photography prevailed--along with being able to sell the Leica equipment for considerably more than I had paid for it.

Fast forward to today and I am now using Fuji X-Pro1 cameras instead of Leica M6 cameras and Fuji XF lenses have replaced the Leica optics. The 14mm Fujinon is the most recent addition to my bag. It is an outstanding addition too. Being an equivalent 21mm lens, it's not my most used lens. But it is a lens capable of stunning results. I've always liked the expansive view of wide angle lenses over the compressed view of long lenses. The 14mm is very wide--not stupid wide, but wide enough to encompass a lot of subject matter. Something this wide may not be essential to everyone's photography but nothing can replace it when needed. Image quality is superb, distortion is minimal and build is confidence-inspiring.

Got this lens on sale $499 wow what a good move. Had been thinking about the wide zoom but at this price I had to have it. Don't believe the zoom could be this good. I have lots of XF lens but this may be the best one yet.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Fabulous deal at the promotional price, but besides that I love the lens' build quality, image quality capability and the totally retro design. Makes a great companion to my X-E2 & the 18-55mm when I need to get a wider shot. A small bonus is that both lenses use the same hood.
I love Fuji's vision. IMO they build cameras & lenses for real photography enthusiasts. Their equipment is a joy to use and this lens is no exception.

Exactly what I wanted

By Hollyg

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

I love this little lens. It's smaller than I expected, and takes beautiful photos. The 21mm (35 mm equivalent) is a great focal length for getting more in the shot. I am even enjoying using it for portraiture (as long as the people are in the middle third to avoid the edge distortion.)

As with all of my Fuji lenses, the build is solid and everything works just as I'm used to. The push-lock on the focus ring is a first for me, and I love it! For those who haven't used it - after achieving the manual focus you want, you pull the focus ring away from the body, and it snaps into a locked position and will not change until unlocked. (This mechanism does not lock auto focus.)

The lens focuses super close, and its a great lens for taking mirrorless selfies!

Bokeh is great - sharpness is wonderful. It's an all around great addition to my lens line up.

I considered the 10-24 f/4 for the added range, but I'm not a bit sorry I chose the 14mm. I like the faster lens and the fixed focal length is working out well for me. I've been enjoying shooting everything with it the last couple of weeks - even nature, macro(ish) and people in addition to landscapes and buildings.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

Was considering the 14mm, 16mm f/1.4, and the 10-24mm f/4.

Went to B&H store and tried them all and found this to be a lot smaller than the 16mm and 10-24mm. I really wanted to 1.4 aperture of the 16mm, but given its larger physical size and double the weight (as well as the 10-24mm), I ended up choosing the 14mm based on portability. That is mostly why I switched to Fuji system in the first place!

The 14mm has a slightly wider field of view than the 16mm, which is actually noticeable when shooting landscapes. The autofocus seemed snappier and quicker than the 16mm in store. I found the 16mm to be slow when focusing from infinity to closeup objects at about 8 inches. The 14mm was almost instant in focus speed and did not hunt like the 16mm. Although, the 16mm was quieter than the 14mm when focusing.

Would have loved to get the extra shallow depth of field with the 16mm, but for landscapes and most of what I'm shooting I guess I don't really need an f/1.4 ultra wide angle lens.

Love the snap manual focus as well - just like the 23mm 1.4.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R Ultra Wide-Angle Lens:

I thought the lens hood was too big (for street photography), so I bought a cheap vented aluminum lens hood and used a Dremel tool to cut four spots to eliminate the vignetting that occurs. Big improvement for about $10. Great piece of glass.
