I picked this up last week and have really fallen in love with this lens. It is very sharp. It is very small and exceptionally light. I also like the optional boyonet hood that Olympus milks its customers for. I like the focul range selector and the fact that the lens is weather/dust sealed.

I have had some trouble focusing in 1:1 mode but thats not the fault of the lens per se. My only real complaint is that the autofocus is slow and results in a bit of hit or miss focus of your subject. This may be the fact it is a macro lens. I usually use the autofocus to get a general focul point then hold my breath and slowly move the camera forward or backwards to get my subject in focus. Occasionally I will fine tune with the manual focus ring. I leave the focus set to S-AF/M on my OMD. The spider shots were taken with one hand on the camera and one hand on a 800 lumen flashlight to light my subject up. Check out some samples below.

This lens is very well thought of, it produces very good quality images but I it has some issues I'd like to see modified in a future version.

The limiter-1:1 button is a fantastic feature it significantly reduces "post focus hunting traumatic stress" specially when you are shooting 1:1 in low light.

The image quality is good, but it could be better. At the moment we have very high standards to compare macro lenses, but it was quite frustrating for me to confirm that the Olympus XZ-1 macro mode delivers better IQ than this lens. It has by far better sharpness and micro contrast.

It is a shame for a macro dedicated lens to be beatten by compact camera macro mode in essencial parameters for macro photography. Of course the XZ-1/2 Olympus has the best optics of the compact point-and-shoot camera's world, but I'd expect that a dedicated macro lens would be at least as sharp, and the 60mm f2.8 isn't...

I hope that olympus produces a MKII version of this lens with better sharpness, or a sharper model in the 75-80mm range.

After Reading a lot of Panasonic 45mm f2.8 macro vs Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro reviews I decided to compare them for myself. After a few dives with the Panasonic I bought one. It is sharper, has better contrast and the difraction is less destructive in small apertures. The larger DOF of the 45mm also helped when shooting 1:1 and the smaller hiperfocal distance makes it a little more usable in close subject conditions.

Another feature I'd like to see adressed is the manual focus... Although a speed sensitive rotating focus may apear a good idea it is not. It actually renders the manual focus completely unusable. On the other hand the manual focus in Panasonic is very usable.

My final word is: this lens is very capable and produces very good images, better than Sigma 70mm f2.8 (I've been using it intensivelly for a vey long time in Nikon bodies), which is a very capable lens, but the problem is the competition (Panasonic) raised the bar one notch in parameters that are significant for macrophotography.

What realy annoyed me with this lens was to confirm that the optics of a compact camera from the same brand performs better in macrofotography. Of course there are more optical chalenges associated to the bigger micro 4/3 sensor size, but, if Olympus manages to surpass these they will turn one average very good lens to a near perfect one.

I still feel divided and I'd recomend this lens to a friend, because it is very good, but if the main purpose photo scope would be completelly within the 45mm capabilities, and the price woudn't matter, I recommended the Panasonic lens instead.

A very nice macro lens for micro4/3.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

From the trial flower photos taken so far I am quite satisfied with the lens. It would appear that it will make a good 'stand back' lens. With the Panasonic 30mm and 42.5mm lenses I have a good spread between 60mm and 120mm in full frame. If I have to change lenses I usually use my Panasonic compact LF-1 for framing to help in deciding on the best lens option. If I have my E-PM2, E-PL5, and LUMIX GX85 I use the LF-1 to decide which camera to pick. They form my light weight general excursion package with a travel zoom for the unexpected. However one may use it, the results seem to support the lens test results by those who do detailed optical testing. Finally, if you get the lens then I would advise also getting the Olympus sliding hood.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

i really like this lens. tack-sharp macro shots and an excellent short telephoto lens. a good all-purpose lens for the right kind of shoot. this lens is all that olympus promises in more. i'm impressed by both the sharpness of the detail and the color quality of the images. the 60 mm focal length allows me to stay back far enough from the subject to avoid casting a shadow. if you're thinking about buying this lens, do it; you'll like it.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

I bought this well reviewed lens because of its macro capabilities. I now find it on my camera more often than not. I'm not a professional photographer and I really don't like changing lenses because I am often out in inclement weather. From a practical perspective, this lens allows me to shoot a lady bug in my back yard and then go out to the lake and shoot a blue heron braving wind and rain.

Best macro lens for 4/3

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

Very light weight, excellent optics, 1:1 focus ability and superior construction make this the perfect lens for close-up work. It also makes for a great portrait lens. I use this on the OMD E-M1 Mark II body. Only minor drawbacks are the smaller than usual filter size (46mm) and lack of lens hood.

High ratings deserved

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

Familiarize over the weekend and so far very impressed with the lens. I was initially concerned with the focus hunting. I searched and found reviews with instructions. Search for Robin Wong who is a talented photographer and reviewer. He has good insights and tips on maximizing the 60 mm. I love the versatility of a macro and portrait lens with the flip of the switch. It is very sharp but I do need to practice because of the shallow depth of field.

I took advantage of the $100 discount ($399) and the great service and guarantee from B&H.

Otherwise excellent lens undercut by inadequate software

By Robert

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

I use focus stacking with the 60mm macro on an E-M1, and although it has the potential to work well, Olympus has dropped the ball in their manner of implementing it. They make it necessary to select a “focus differential” – a number between 1 and 10 – which determines the size of the “steps” between each shot in the stack. First of all, this selection is buried deep in the complex menu, making it impractical to adjust in a field situation. Second, it’s impossible to know what the optimal setting is for a given combination of focal length, focal distance and aperture, since Olympus gives absolutely no hints on how to determine it. Of course, the camera could figure this out automatically, and make the setting on its own, but its not currently programmed to do it. Such a shame that the superlative hardware is hamstrung by inadequate software.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

Love this lens. Tried it and a Lumix 30mm macro and this was much better with more features. Worth the extra $100. The images are very sharp and crisp. And I am really picky about that.

The Macro Sweet Spot

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This Micro 4/3 60mm lens hits the sweet spot for macro photography at 120mm equivalent focal length. It is light weight, sharp with accurate focus. It can also double as an excellent portrait lens. Get the sliding lens hood. It's worth the price.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This lens is a very good macro lens. It has excellent sharpness and is compact and light compared to similar lenses for full frame cameras. I use it with my Olympus M5 II in preference to my my Nikon 105 mm F2.8 VR macro lens with my Nikon DSLRs, as the combination is one heck of a lot lighter to carry around.

Olympus quality, need more be said?

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This lens most certainly deserves the outstanding reputation it has in terms of IQ. Even though I've read most of the reviews prior to purchase and basically understood how versatile this lens could be, I still was surprised at how good it is for portraits. Be aware, however, that macro requires a learning curve, but that's part of the fun.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This lens does not have the feel of high quality optics like the 75 mm 1.8, but looks can be deceiving.  I found this lens to be about as sharp as the 75 when both are used at 2.8.  It is also more weatherproof than the 75.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

It is a very small and light lens with pretty good macro capabilities. Much better shots than a bundled macro lens. Can only wish it was in a pro line with a more solid build and full weatherproofing, but until it's just a wish, this one is a must have lens for a 4/3rds lineup.

Comments about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens:

This lens is more than expected. I got this lens for my nature photography. Then, I found it is well designed not only for close up photography but also for daily use. Before purchase, I was little wondering about this little long focal length, but realized that it is good for simple framing for every object. I satisfied the sharp image quality, weather sealed and inner focus design as well. Now, this is one of my favorite lens.
