Good but not great

Comments about Leica 30-90mm f/3.5-5.6 Vario-Elmar-S ASPH. Lens:

I purchased the zoom lens for it's convenience. Having owned a Hasselblad and 50-110mm lens I had high hopes for the Leica. While it is convenient and for the most part sharp, anything that is out of focus, especially at the wide end of the zoom renders with a strange double image. I've heard someone else review the lens who says this is a characteristic of aspherical lenses. I had Leica examine the lens and while it was slightly improved, the double image effect in out of focus parts of the frame is still there, and in my opinion unacceptable for any lens costing this money, let alone a Leica.

Comments about Leica 30-90mm f/3.5-5.6 Vario-Elmar-S ASPH. Lens:

I am fairly new to the Leica S system. I was a little reluctant to purchase a zoom lens, since I was concerned that the image quality would not be up to Leica prime lens standards. Prior to this lens, I've been using the 45mm, 70mm and 120mm, which are all excellent. But with a motorcycle trip to Europe coming up and not being able to lug around the body and multiple lenses, I opted for the zoom. I just took it along on a motorcycle trip up the California coast. All I can say is "WOW". It may not be quite as fast as the prime lenses. But the image quality is incredible. There is nothing sacrificed at all.

And yes… all the Leica magic dust is included too.
