A little about me:
I am a professional photographer working in fashion, beauty, product and portraiture. I use an Hasselblad for my work.
I have been always fascinated by Leica's look and finally decided to buy one.

About the camera:
As soon as out of the box in my hands I can feel the German craftsmanship. It is solid, exceptionally made and the size is really perfect for me, not too small not too big.
-Love the view finder.
-Love the all-manual- film camera-like feeling.
-Love the focus and menu
-And most important I love the pictures that comes out of it..

The camera performs better than I expiated in my preliminary tests, see attached photos.

Pros:
- Leica's look, good "vintage" saturation, if you know how to use this camera you can obtain film-like images before beginning to edit..
- Compact, silent, discrete.

"Cons:"
- It takes a little to adjust to this type of "fully manual" shooting. (no autofocus etc) But this is also a Pros and one of the reasons why I bought it..
- Price of the lenses! some of the lenses are truly remarkable but the also cost a fortune 3k to 7k range for a really good lens. (however they seem not to depreciate and that is good).

Who should get this camera:
-A person whom is really passionate about photography.
-A person whom desires to challenge him/herself skills and have access to an extremely creative tool.

Who should NOT get this camera:
- Entusiasts with some good money to blow, whom are used to point and shoots and the all-automatic modern cameras.
- Professional photographers whom do not have the patience to step back from modern technology and take "a dive into something else.."

Conclusions:
This is an exceptionally made camera, one can feel it in everything, the menus, the view-finder, the metering, the sounds, it is compact, the design and I can go on and on.. Leica M Rangefinder is a great-expensive tool to fall in love with photography once more. There is a whole world of breathtaking-beauty and this camera will help you capture it with it's own personality added to it.

PS I have not test the video capability yet.

Let me first say that I own a leica x2 and love it. I received the Leica m and the 50mm f2.0 cron yesterday1/30/14. I waited 10 months on the B&H site. What a let down. It is to heavy for me. and the few shots where nice, but not that much better the the X2 for the price.

Let me say that Leica m is a thing to behold. But it was not for me. It pains me to send this back.

Also the seal on both the m and the lens box where broken. I did a sensor test and it was loaded with dust. This could have been open stock.

It is a great camera but not for me. I am 77 years old and been into photography since I was 14. I have A SpeadGrafic,4by5, Rolli 6x6, Pentax 645 Nikon f100. I love to take pictures.

I always Buy from B&H. there a great store.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I grew up with a Leica camera. When I was 18 (1966) my dad bought me one in the discount stores where the World Trade Center is, or used to be. I used the camera all over the world, until the digital revolution. I would have switched to digital immediately, except the price was outrageous. Now that I am a rich old man, I can afford one. There is no question that people who buy this camera buy it either because they grew up with them as I did, or because they want a piece of jewelry around their necks. The fact that I bought one should tell you a lot about me. It delivers beautiful photographs, and so do a lot of other cameras. You need to focus manually; I love it. If you don't understand what it means to focus manually, then please don't buy this camera. If you love absolute control over your images, from focus, to shutter speed, to aperture, and you have any understanding of the history of photography, then by this camera. This is a great camera, but it is definitely not point and shoot.

A wonderful camera for research and travel

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

For thirty years I used Leica cameras for research and travel in West Africa. I loved them because they were unobtrusive, dependable, durable, easy-to-use, and produced excellent images. My photography is similar to "street photography" in this country, I need to be able to capture the image quickly, and it is important that I not stand out as the center of attention. With the digital revolution (1995) I had to switch to digital, but I could not afford a Leica M8 or M9. so I used cheaper Nikons, Canons, Panasonics and others. Recently I was able to get a grant that permitted me to buy a Leica M (240) with a 35mm F1 .4. The results are wonderful. The camera is small and compact, works exactly like my old film Leicas, and like them produces very high quality images. I love the fact that you take the bottom plate off to replace the battery or change the memory card. The 240 is much heavier than my old Leica M-P or my Leica M6, but it is only a little bit thicker. Compared to a Canon or Nikon DSLR it is very small and unobtrusive. This is a real advantage when you're walking across the hot dusty fields of West Africa, and you don't want to be lugging around a superheavy camera. Manual focusing with Leica M lenses is no problem at all. I purchased a 240 instead of an M 10 because I wanted to be able to record video. Some old-school Leica photographers may laugh at this, but the fact is that a lot of us work in surroundings where it is important to be able to do video as well as still photography.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I first began to use Leica rangefinder cameras in the late 1960s when I was a high school student traveling in North Africa and the Middle East. I first carried a Minolta which became jammed with sand in Algeria, and so most of my photos were overexposed. When I returned to New York I asked for the most durable camera I could find, which I could strip clean to make sure that it was always working. I purchased an M3 Leica in downtown Manhattan not far from where the World Trade Center once stood. I used a Leica M4-P on trips to Africa in the 1970s and early 1980s, and then acquired an M6. I used black and white film in the M4-P, and color slide film in the M6. The results on film were superb, and I have thousands of images that I took all over West Africa until about 1999.
The digital photograph revolution started in the early 1990s, and I hung onto my rangefinder Leicas until 2000, the last time I took them to Africa. I sold both camera bodies and nine lenses. I was never able to afford a digital Leica until recently when I received a grant that allowed me to buy a Leica M (240) and a 35 mm f.1.4 Summilux. This is not an easy-to-use, point and shoot, amateur camera. I have no difficulty with it at all because I learned to use the rangefinder to focus more than 30 years ago. I find I must be very careful, and pay attention to what I'm doing, make sure both that the focus (which is easy) and the exposure are correct. The benefit of this, as others have stated, is that it forces you to think more carefully about your photographs, and the results tend to be better images. I like the quality of the images as much as I liked the quality of the images with the M4-P and M6. As most of you know if you under or over exposed an image using Kodachrome 64, the results were poor and it was almost impossible to make any adjustments to the image. Now, shooting in raw, I can make major improvements if a photograph is under or over exposed a little bit. I always liked rangefinder Leicas because they were small and unobtrusive, which is helpful in an African village. They are very solid and durable, and in fact the M (240) is so solid it feels a bit like a brick of gold. The images are splendid, sharp, clear, excellent color. It is easy to carry a single body and two lenses even when walking around the hot, dusty, open plains of West Africa. I love it. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has $10,000 to blow.

Street photography dangers

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

The best camera Leica M and lenses thus far if your going for that authentic film photography era look and feel. One thing about Using a Leica camera in the street, It is a risk it. The cost is way to high if damaged, stolen or whatever goes wrong. Leica needs to come up with a solution on the cost. Back in the 60's a Leica was priced right; so I was told.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I have been shooting with Leica film cameras for years. I have a nice collection of both m and r lenses. I finally decided to buy the m since I ran out of my final supply of Kodak G film. I shoot primarily fine art images and the m(240) is living up to my expectations. I am using both m and r lenses on the camera and having a great time creating images. I require little post production and can go to print quickly. The color and detail has been excellent. the images are sharp with great color and contrast. i really like shooting my r macro on the m it captures great detail. I like to shoot wide open and it looks just like my images I captured on film. My work flow is much faster and no longer nee to process film. I am looking forward to adding the m monochrome to my collection know.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

This is my first Leica digital camera. I had a number of M6TTL's and loved them, but film was more and more challenging to deal with, so I sold all my Leica gear and went with Canon about 12 years ago. Naturally as soon as I sold my last Leica lens they announced they were making a digital, but I'd cashed out of Leica, and stayed with Canon until now.

I picked up a very lightly used Leica M, and it's spectacular. It operates very much like the M6's that I was use to. The manual metering, manual focus, and the feel of the camera in my hands are like an old fashion film camera...and the images are STUNNING.

This camera isn't for everyone, and it's really only ideal for modest wide angle to short telephoto work. But if you like shooting the way it was back in the 1960's this camera is perfect. Some complain about the price, and yes German cameras cost more...but they are noticeably better than the Nikon and Canon cameras.

Menus and features are very simple and easier to understand than many other camera manufacturers. After shooting with it for a week, I've ordered an M monochrome. I'd heard less than great reviews of the M8 and earlier Leica cameras, but clearly they are getting it right now.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Silver):

I was never able to do serious manual focusing with DSLRs, Manual focus has been the norm for me with all my film 35mm and my manual Nikon lenses but DSLRs don't have the nice focusing screen with split prism of the old SLR. AF is good but not perfect and can't be used with manual lenses. Life View help to a certain point. Now I do have 100% of my photos perfectly in focus, I had thousands done and not a single OOF shot. Another positive is the amazing sharpness with AA filter. I do have a D800E and good fix lenses but it's really close to the M240 even though one is a 36MP camera and the other is 24. Noise also very acceptable. Big negative is the sub-par focus peaking, is like not having it. Video is better than expected. Overall photo quality shock most of the people, they don't expect this type of quality form a digital camera. Voigtlander lens are almost as good as original Leica. Buy them with no remorse.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Silver):

Life is short, I used SLRs/DSLRs for 40 years but I never had a Leica. I had pretty much any Nikon DSLR both in FX & DX format. I do have the 4:3 format and the Nikon 1 and I like them all but my recent move to Leica should have been done earlier. I take much better photo now and I think that part is the camera tuning part is that I'm forced to think like I used to do 40 years ago. Modern cameras like a D810 are too easy to use and you end-up taking too many shots done superficially. Using the Leica M is like going back to film and the camera has amazing film-like colors and tones. I feel I'm back to the Velvia and Ilford days.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Silver):

I loved my four Leica primes and that's where Leica really shines! The M that I owned was a bit of a disappointment in terms of keepers. I mastered the focus but the slightest movement handheld often killed the shot.

The ergonomics is horrible so I purchased the very funky looking grip together with the 'ThumbsUp' device that fits in the flash mount. Even so I wish I had kept it or at least kept the glass, but I have since moved on to something I find more useable.

I now only use Carl Zeiss glass but they're no match to Leica primes in my opinion. At my age, I now rely on auto focus for most shots.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

Perfect for travel, although it is heavier and thicker than the M9. The image quality is extremely high, even at the higher ISO's. The noise is acceptable at 3200 which is great when shooting after dark on the street. I am very pleased with the color rendering which is important even though I always shoot RAW. It is slower on start up than the M9 which affects reviewing pictures more than shooting pictures.
I have not used the video and probably will not.
Leica is expensive but you get great pictures and great reliability in a light weight package.
I think the battery life is excellent.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I have saved and waited a long time for this superb camera and it excedes my expectations and probably my ability. Have taken only about a thousand shots, and as I improve I intend to grow with the Camera. It is heavier than my Vario X, but with the M series I can play to my hearts content. Shooting a cron 50 and Sumi 35 and 90. All so far wonderful. For old tired eyes like mine I reccomend an evf. I have both the Olympus, works fine, but I confess to springing for the Leica, just for bragging rights and to make the outfit look well, Leica like. One thing is don't lose your hot shoe protector. Leica wants $[*] for a $.05 piece of plastic. A fine camera, best I have ever owned.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I've used film-based Leica M cameras for quite some time, and this is my first forray into the digital M. Excluding the M Monochrom for the moment, I am glad I waited for this model, as I feel it represents a big improvement over the earlier versions. Even if you do not use some of the new features, such as the movie mode, or Live View on the rear monitor, the other improvements add a great deal of value to this camera. For instance, the physical design and construction of the camera body have been improved, making for a solid, weather resistant body that feels like a (slightly) larger version of my MP. The new battery is more powerful than in previous models, and easily lasts a full day, especially if you are careful in adjusting the camera settings. The optical rangefinder was redesigned (internally--no visible changes) and offers a very bright, easy to use field of view, and the LED framelines are always highly visible. Although I mostly rely on the rangefinder, the optional EVF2 allows you to take advantage of the new focus peaking feature, that helps you nail the focus with great precision. The EVF (and the monitor) also shows you not only the exact view through the lens, but also the depth of field as well as the effect of exposure compensation before you take the photo. This camera lets you "feel" the amount of engineering and software development that preceded it. It feels like, and is, a solid, reliable professional tool, that now also offers the choice of using Leica R (and non-Leica) primes and zoom lenses. It can also be set-up as a studio camera, through the addition of the multi-function handgrip. It's simply a great camera, and demonstrates that the Leica M series has a great future ahead of it.

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

I am a professional photographer and have been shooting Canon all my life. This is my first Leica and camera and I love it. I started off shooting film and the Leica M reminds me of the old Canon rangefinder I used many years ago.

The simplicity of the camera's controls allows me to concentrate on the creating the photo instead of having to worry about the camera.

I have been spoiled by the 5D MkIII autofocus, so it's taken a little time to re-learn how to use the split image viewfinder. But it's a minor issue and it's a pleasure to actually control the camera.

Compared to the 5DMkIII the Leica is tiny. So I find myself taking it with me a lot more often. Plus, it is small and discrete so people don't notice that you have a camera with you. Great for street photography.

The image quality is as good if not better than my 5D MkIII. It's hard to compare directly because the Leica lenses are so good, it's not a fair comparison.

Great Camera with still some flaws

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Silver):

Let me first tell you this is absolutely gorgeous camera with awesome capability of taking stunning pictures. I owned 2 SLRs for last 12 years and found I am carrying my camera (the M) more frequently and more comfortably than ever; that explains a lot. If you have a great camera but if it is difficult to carry around - the whole meaning is gone. Also these days walking with a big camera is sort of sight pollution; every Tom, Dick and Harry has an SLR and the meaningless clicking at everything and everyone made carrying around a large camera looking cheap. Leica is in rescue - giving an absolute capable lightweight small camera without getting noticed much or better only get noticed by knowledgeable folks and of course it does not pollute the sight as much the consumer SLRs do.

I bought Summilux 50mm/1.4 ASPH newest lens which is an absolutely gorgeous piece of glass. I would recommend this to anybody who wants to do street photography as well as some portraits. I never used a 50mm before but I am using this all the time as a general purpose lens which is extremely capable. Specially it sees almost in the same way our naked eyes see around which is really great. My new love for 50 mm is probably due to Leica for its great smallish Summilux as well as gorgeous small camera which allows me to carry it around easily compare to bulky SLRs. I taste in photography has changed too. My photography was more object oriented before and now more subject oriented. I used to find an object to capture and use all the technique to amplify it; now I see the whole subject that goes beyond an object and try to capture that with its context around and with that I inclined more towards the street photography style. I believe thats a good transition for me and thank Leica M to facilitate that.

Lets get to the Leica M features that matter to me. Can't talk much about its design and ergonomics as it is a legend in that department which is known to the world. The features I noticed first and liked them are:
                      1) Focus peaking - thats awesome addition to a rangefinder and focusing a range finder is not easy all the time - when done right it is dead on but there are time when it is not very easy to do. The people like me coming from long SLR background may find it difficult to focus using 2 overlapping images; though I'm comfortable doing it most of the times but not always. Eye strain is another factor in focusing any camera and specially rangefinder in low light situation. Focus peaking on live view is really the saver in this.
                      2) The classic look - can't say enough about it :)
                      3) The black-chrome finish when couple with chrome colored lens - its just something absolutely beautiful
                      4) The easy navigation. Specially the ISO change, even though I desire a dedicated button for ISO change but what it is today is great too. Keep the ISO button depressed the push up/down arrow button.
                      5) Ease of taking along - most important feature is this to me. I am carrying this camera virtually everywhere unlike my SLRs. It easy to carry around due to its size and shape including the lens size and also it has that love factor - I love to carry it around.
                      6) The dead accurate range-finder focusing - I am not comfortable using it in every light situation but when it can used - its is dead accurate.

                      The things I didn't like:
                      1) Length of Camera strap; and hey I am just 5'6". When I put the camera in my messenger bag with open flap it does not go fully in the bag due to the short length of the strap even when fully extended. Too bad.
                      2) The base plate - quick access of the SD card is pain in the butt. So the battery.
                      3) Recycle time - I missed few shots due to that. Sometimes the click just doesn't work even after 1 minute or 2. Is that only me?
                      4) Magnification while reviewing the pictures through "play" button. It responds slow at times- very annoying.
                      5) Battery life - not very long sorry can't agree with people claiming it has long enough battery life

                      Debatable desire:
                      1) I know Leica purist may not like it but I think a dedicated ISO knob would be useful, placement of that could be challenging but hey thats why the expensive design engineers are for right!
                      2) The battery is quite large compare to the camera and it takes between 1/3rd to 1/4th of them camera body. Leica could be made slimmer with the battery in a projected enclosure acting as embedded grip. Width wise battery could be half inside and half project (enclosed).

Comments about M Digital Rangefinder Camera (Body Only, Black):

It's a rangefinder so you know what the shortcomings are going in. This is a very nice camera. I have far too many cameras right now and something will have to go, but it won't be this. Fit and finish is amazing, latest firmware so none of the early issues. Paired with a 50 f2 Summicron, and its very nice. Zero issues so far.

Color is great, focusing is pretty easy except in low light, but with Live View, no issue really. High ISO performance is great. Very tight and pleasing luminance grain; I don't surpress this at all, just chrominance.

The camera is HEAVY. Freakishly so. And it's not really comfortable to hold, but hey, I knew that coming in.

Let's face it, they don't really have any competition and the handcrafted quality and precision can't be found elsewhere. This is as simple as it gets, and it's special. Yes, my D800 runs rings around in most areas, but it's also void of any real personality.

                        Battery life is stunning.

B&H service as always is amazing.
