I Initially bought the 1.4 about 3 days before B&H put this on their website, I then bought this lens to test both lenses and see which fit my needs better. I will give you a quick overview of what i found about both lenses. This conclusion was based using a chart, and my 5d mk2. This is my second 1.4L as well as the one i bought a year earlier i needed to return for money issues. And this recent model was a much better performing lens then my past 1.4L.

The 1.4L
Pros
-Better construction
-more professional feeling
-Max 1.4 for great selective focus.

Cons
-Cooler color Temp (as per my testing)
-Worse and noticeable CA (for you who do not know, when you get to the corners of the image, you get ghosting of green and purple tints around details)
-Equal Falloff at Max Aperture as the USM

The 2.0 USM
Pros
-Lightweight
-IS
-INCREDIBLY more sharp then the 1.4 @ 1.4 and 2.0 corner to corner. The 2.0 USM is sharper throughout the frame then the 1.4L. Even when stopping down to f4, on both lenses they are equal sharpness but the CA is still worse on the 1.4L
-VERY minimal and unnoticeable CA if any.
-Bokeh is much smoother then the 1.4L as it has rounded blades for more circular OFF (Out of Focus) blurs.
-Color temp was warmer (Which i prefer but all can be altered in photoshop).
-IS is silent and much better then the previous IS motors on earlier lenses.

Cons
-Overpriced
-Cheap plastic construction
-No lens hood yet
-Max aperture at 2.0

Conclusion:
The 35 F2 USM is a great performing lens and the 2.0 is the perfect formulation for the 35mm focal length. It performs way better then the 1.4 optically. The 1.4L is better built and you can feel the quality put into that lens. The price for the 35 f2 is overpriced just because of the cheap plastics it is built with, but Canon figures that it is an amazing performer that they can charge that price and people who know will pay for it, IN both video (IS is a great plus for videographers) and photography.

I am returning the 1.4L just because of its weaker performance optically, higher price tag (but not by much). And the f2 will benefit me with handheld videos during weddings and various projects that require video. Its too bad the f2 isnt an L Glass with metal construction bc i would pay for that in a heartbeat without hesitation.

If you are debating between the 1.4L and the 2.0 USM and can wait alittle longer, Wait until the price goes down for the 2.0 USM because $100-$200 decrease this lens should be in everyones bag. Also i was considering the Sigma but the various Auto-focusing issues (Back or Forward Focus) scared me, since i did not want to keep changing lenses to search for that perfect lens.

I hope this helped you decide on the lens. Good luck

I find myself reaching for Prime lenses for the edge they offer over their zoom counterparts.

My biggest complaint with this lens would be the severe vignetting (light fall off as you get further from the center of the frame.)

On a FF body, you lose 3 (!) stops of light by the corners when shooting at f/2.0

(i.e. f/5.6 in the corners.)

For APSC / Crop sensor users, the corner fall off isn't nearly as bad. (1 stop) Wide open.

Be sure to update your EOS Utility if you want to add In-Camera correction (on supported bodies.)

That aside! The lens performs great. The Image stabilizer gives me tac sharp / tripod like images down to 1/5th of a second, allowing me to take landscape photo's handheld at low ISO and narrow apertures.

Longer than 1/5th is entirely possible, and you may get lucky with a few keepers at even 1 second handheld, but that's kind of pushing it.

While sharp wide open; by f/4 it's about as good as it gets, and vignetting is much improved.

If shooting shallow DOF is important to you, the Sigma may be a better lens.

For me; I perfer the ability to put more in focus at lower ISO's

for example:

35mm f/4.0 ISO 400 @ 1/5 on Canon

v.s.

35mm f/4.0 ISO 6400 @ 1/80 on Sigma

(Assuming the 4-stop stabilizer figure is to be beleived.)

The Canon can also get closer and offers better MM.

Note: It's not that you CANT get good pictures at f/2; the vignetting can definately be corrected in post, and it might even be desirable for the effect your after.

Exceptional lens IQ

By Brad

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

Purchased to use with the Sony A7RII using the Sigma MC-11 adapter. Very happy to report, in terms of resolution and IQ, this lens is as good, perhaps better than my Batis 25 and 85mm lens. The adapter/camera has an issue with the Canon lens IS system by overcompensating stabilization and hopefully will be corrected with a firmware update. For now I find selecting the Sony SteadyShot menu manually to 8mm (less aggressive stabilization?) helps to correct the overcompensation and does improve handheld shots at slow shutter speeds with IS turned on. Reportedly the Metabones adapter does not overcompensate and allows individual selection of lens stabilization vs in camera stabilization. Very happy with this purchase!

Such a great deal

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

This lens is so much fun. Canon did a good job with this lens. Even if the optics are similar to the previous USM version, the added IS makes it a no brainer for hand held video work. I've seen a lot of different people reacting poorly to this lens criticizing its image quality. I personally think that image quality is fantastic for the price range. It takes great photos during the day or at night with my flash. Not only that, but it is built like a tank with an extremely dampened focusing ring. It feels like it will last forever and manual focusing is a breeze. I would buy it again if anything happened to the one I have!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I read many reviews about this lens before making the decision to purchase it. I am very happy that I weighed the good with the not so good. This lens is awesome! I used it to photograph a graduation party and a birthday party. The photos were tack sharp. I was so pleased that I am planning to keep the lens on my camera when I travel. It's light enough not to weigh you down if you plan to take pictures for two or three.... maybe four consecutive hours.

Just what the Doctor ordered.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

After reading ALL the reviews, I took the plunge. This lens is highly underrated by some of the "L" group. As more and more people use it, I believe they will find that it has the perfect combination of features: Bokeh, quick focus, lightweight, fast, and IS for incredible video. Feels fantastic on a 6D, and would be a great on a crop factor for that classic "standard focal length" look (technically 56mm). This lens makes me want to take pictures.

Nice bang for the buck

By Beavercreek Dan

from Beavercreek, OH

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I'll start by saying I'm an L lens junky. I wanted a light walk around for our Ireland trip that would also be fast for some pub shots as well as street shots. I've got that focal length covered with L zooms but not at that speed and lightness.

I couldn't justify the cost and weight upgrade for the 1.4L version for as often I'll likely use it. I mostly do portraits for money and everything else for fun. So my 85 1.2 is my go to for that. I just wanted wider for times I want street shots or interiors where speed is needed.

IQ is very good but dark in the corners wide open (on a full framer). I'm ok with that because I usually add that in post anyway. If I don't this lens is in lens correction in Lightroom so it's just a click and fixed. Build quality is pretty darn good for a non-L lens. Focus is as fast as I could ever ask for and the manual focus feel is tight but very smooth (any old manual focus film camera users out there, it feels like those lenses). That and the IS will please the movie makers.

If your on the fence and you don't need the extra stop of the 1.4, it's a lot of lens for the money in my opinion.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens out of desire for a wider angle for landscapes without the distortion of a super wide angle, and still be able to shoot head-shots and portraits. I was coming from a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (not art) lens, and this Canon glass definitely does not disappoint. I thought coming from a super wide open f/1.4 down to an f/2 would compromise image quality, but that is not the case at all. Honestly, it's so hard to nail focus at 1.4 that I don't really miss it.

The best parts about this lens are how much lighter it is than the Sigma. Much easier to carry around around my neck. The slightly smaller filter thread of 67mm, which makes the barrel not quite as big as my 77mm on the Sigma, making it a little more compact. And also, IS! Makes it a must for handheld video shooting, which I do a lot of. I am by NO MEANS saying my old Sigma 50mm is a bad lens. It's an excellent piece of professional glass. It's just amazing that this little, light and very versatile Canon lens checks all my boxes and then some.

I am EXTREMELY happy with this lens! Do recommend.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM Lens:

I was reading reviews of the Canon 35mm f/1.4 when the reviewer compared this lens with the Canon 35mm f/2 IS. I decided to research further and decided to buy the 35mm f/2 IS and I'm very happy with that decision. The lens never fails to impress me and it's surprisingly good in low light conditions with my Canon 6D. I've never mounted it on any other camera. I like to travel light and this camera and lens together with my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 MKII fit nicely into a small easy to carry bag. One drawback is the high price of the Canon lens hood.

Excellent lens for normal walkabout street photos, especially on travel. Also useful for food photography with limited light.

The combination of the image stabilization with f/2 is fantastic -- in dark streets can get good results with 1/10 exposure (on a Canon 6D).

Very, very sharp results as well, even wide-open.

My son uses this lens on his EOS Rebel T5i, while I use it on a 6D body. This lens is a perfect match for the Rebel, because it's light, provides a a "physiological" angle of view, and has IS. It is also relatively inexpensive. On 6D, the 35 f/2 IS competes with my EF 16-40 f4/L, and while it beats the zoom in the weight department, it is clearly loosing in terms of versatility. Both are comparable optically.

I have used the lens for landscape shots ,videos & stills of my granddaughter. Very sharp images. You can see fine details in her eyes. I am able to get good results at 1/4 of a second for stationary objects. The background blur is good. It is much better than the original 35mm f2.0 & much better than the 50mm 1.8. It takes nice clear videos & the Image stabilization does help control the shakes. The one negative when shooting video is that you can hear the Image stabilization in your audio if it is very quiet. For my use 35mm, on a full frame camera, is wide enough for landscapes, wide enough for small group shots, & you can get pretty close without distorting features. I think you will be pleased with the build quality(it just feels very solid) & the still & video this camera outputs.

Spent a lot of time reading reviews to determine what would be the most versatile lens for my 7D for capture still pics and brief video clips, and am very happy with this lens. It's easy to carry and handle, of course, and the IQ is great. I'm very happy with the video quality, and with the relatively small size, it's small enough to keep handy in order to be ready to video something at the spur of the moment. I do a lot of outdoor video projects, but it's nice to have this camera handy to get quality video at close range and/or inside a lodge at the beginning or end of a day.
