Beautiful Light

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

Build quality, fit, and finish are all excellent as one would expect from Profoto. I really like the "rhino hide" texturized outer finish. It appears strong and durable. Contrary to what I've heard elsewhere, assembly was straight forward and quite manageable for one person. If you learned how to assemble a softbox correctly then you shouldn't have trouble with this one. Insert a rod into the speed ring; next, insert the opposing rod by pushing the outer end into a carpeted floor or against a wall corner (per Profoto's instructions) to bend the rod into fitting the speed ring; repeat. The process takes a bit a "umph" but is totally manageable indoors and by just one person. If you try to assemble a 5' Octa designed for indoor use on a windy beach or park, then expect trouble; you'll likely need an assistant. Disassembly is a bit harder as the tension on the rods is very strong. Maybe this will ease up as the new fabric stretches out over time. It's difficult to get a good grip on the ends of the smooth thin rods to pull out of the speed ring. I had to use pliers and a bit more "umph" to get the process going, but once the first two rods were out, the rest came easy.

The inner and outer baffles are removable; you can use the Octa with one, both, or none. Using the optional 50 degree grid provides greater directional control over light spread. I love the versatility of this softbox!

Beautiful light modifier.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

I love the quality of light this modifier offers. It's super soft and is perfect for portraits. My only complaint is assembly is a bit annoying. Some of the metal prods like to slip out of the bottom pocket when trying to attach to a speed ring. I had to get another person to help me hold it all in place. Other than that, it's what I expected and wanted.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

The 5' RFi Octa Softbox is extremely easy to put together and the light it generates is beautiful. It is wonderful for head-shots as well as Bridal sessions in the studio. My suggestion is to always use it with a C-Stand as it does have a little weight to it.

Great light, sturdy, cumbersome. There quick assembly tricks

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

I bought this to replace a Photek Softlighter II which gave great light but didn't play well with outdoor shoots or breezes. This is still a sail, but at least it's a sail that won't blow apart (or away, with assistants or sandbags). I have the 3' version also, and this is much more bothersome to set up. The poles can be a real tangled mess, and tend to cross over themselves and complicate assembly. They also slip out of their slots very easily. When you get this, make an inch-long loop of gaffer tape, sticky side out. Wrap this around the poles that fit into the outer slots by the large opening, then wedge them into those slots, securing it with another piece. Otherwise, the poles are constantly slipping out and you waste valuable time reseating them.

The poles tend to cross over themselves when disassembled, making it hard to find the pole which is opposite the first one you put into the speed ring. So take a sharpie and mark the speed ring end of two poles that are opposite each other. Once those are in, assembly is pretty quick. This thing is expensive, but I've gone through a couple umbrellas with diffusion socks, which cost me more in the long run. Not to mention the problem of what to do when your diffuser breaks in the middle of a shoot.

provides an excellent source of soft lighting.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

Used this on a couple wedding shoots and worked perfectly. I had to move a couple different locations for this assignment so to a save on assembly time at the sites I assembled the softbox and removed 4 splines from the speed ring on each side allowing me to move it quickly without complete disassembly allowing me to flatten it enough to move in my vehicle. I would say the only downside would be the assembly time. it took me about 20 min to assemble but time may improve as the receiving pockets break in a little and I get a little faster. I found the easiest way is to step a leg through the back to bend rods into the speed ring; once together It is an Awesome light source built to Profoto standards.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

I bought this after refusing to buy another company's umbrella for the 4th time, even though I loved it, I just needed something that is rugged and dependable. This is definitely that. The light quality is big and beautiful. All parts are well made, though I wish the inner diffuser attached via clips like it does on the newer portable beauty dish. Instead it's just velcro tabs. It is a bit tough to wrestle together and it does take more time than I'd like to set up. You get what you pay for and this is fantastic.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

The 5' RFi Octa Softbox by Profoto is the best softbox I've ever used! It's a bit tricky to assemble and disassemble but after the first two or three tries you get the hang of it and can put it together in less than 10 minutes. I use it in combination with Profoto RFi Speedlight Speedring and two Canon 600EX-RT speedlites. It gives consistently amazing results! Keep in mind that this thing is HUGE but folds down to unbelievably small size and can be stored easily. I absolutely love it!!

This Octa is a beautiful modifier. Yes, it's a bit of a pain to assemble and disassemble but it's totally worth your time. I got it for a look book and at 45 creates a wonderful wrap around light with a nice soft shadow. Add a reflector and it's pure beauty. It is now my favorite modifier and will strongly recommend you get one.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

The 5' RFI Octa is a beautiful source. It's big enough to light a small room on it's own and it's great for portraits, especially nice with the grid. I also like to pull the diffusion off and use it like a big umbrella, but with the flashcube facing the subject. It has a harder effect, but with smaller and more open shadows. It's very nicely made compared to the photoflex/impact price range of soft boxes and not terribly more expensive.

Other reviews mention it being difficult to set up, but I found that to be false. I have three different speed rings and it's easy with all of them. It is on the larger size, but it isn't as deep as something like a large chimera super, so it is a bit easier to handle.

If you are in a dark room and you need a window light to fill the area. All you need is this. Only thing.... its a pain to set up and break down.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

I waited for quite some time to purchase this, and in hindsight, what a mistake that was. The light from this modifier is beautiful, there is no other way to put it. It is extremely versatile and very forgiving/flattering. It also provides excellent contrast for such a large light source. If it's the only one you can afford, it should be the first one you buy. It is heavy, but very well made.

Comments about Profoto 5' RFi Octa Softbox:

I have used many different light modifying tools over the years however this Profoto 5' Octa is BY FAR the softest and most beautifully flattering light I have seen in camera after use.

There is no doubt that Profoto costs more than any of their competitors. This is for a good reason. They are uncontested in their quality and performance.

I HIGHLY recommend that if you have the means to do so, pick this one up. You will not be sorry.

I got this softbox and the equivalent from Broncolor. Both are fantastic; however I kept the Broncolor because is lighter, easier to assemble and you can leave the ribs so you can have it ready faster. Also I feel the light is softer on the Broncolor. I still would give this softbox a five star rating because it is absolutely fantastic.
