I love Nikon, but the Vello is a solid alternative when you just can't part with the money.
I am comparing this grip to the Nikon grip I have for my D7000:
- it fits - no wiggle, space, or play between the body and grip.
- buttons are responsive - I use the AE/AF for bbf, and there is no lag; shutter button has good feel, and directional buttons work fine.
- Command dials work
- battery tray - battery will not seat as easily in the tray as the Nikon grip, however, once it's in, you're fine. Tray slides in smoothly, and fits perfectly in grip.
- Love the extra battery tray for back-up use with AA batteries.
- The feel is solid and grip surfaces are identical to the Nikon.
- Camera recognizes the grip/battery

I am happy with the performance, and very happy to have saved the extra money for other gear on my wish list.

I have a Nikon D600 and a 24-70mm f2.8 lens. The lens is fairly heavy, so the battery grip provides better balance.

The main reason I wanted a battery grip was so I could shoot verticals without having my right elbow wrenched up in the air to reach the shutter button. The battery grip provides a shutter release for vertical orientation shots.

I examined the grip Promaster makes, and it seemed a little junky in construction. I also examined the Phottix grip, and it didn't look any better. I've heard from more than one source that Nikon's grip looks junky. I read reviews for battery grips, and the general consensus seemed to be that Vello has one of the better made grips. Upon receiving mine from B&H, I agreed that the Vello grip appeared to be more solidly constructed.

I like the grip, and it makes my camera more enjoyable to handle. Having said that, the multi-selector is very squirrely. It cannot be depended on to take me to the focusing sensor that I'm trying to select, but it's possible to reach the multi-selector on the camera, so I'm OK with the multi-selector being undependable.

Also, for purposes of image playback, the multi-selector is pretty much useless, because if I want to zoom in on an image in the monitor and navigate the box that selects the portion of the image that will appear magnified in the monitor screen, then one touch of the squirrely multi-selector will entirely undo all the zooming that has been done, because it thinks I'm trying to press the OK button in the center of the multi-selector.

The grip also has a command dial and a sub-command dial. These work fairly well, but they cannot be 100% depended on to be accurate. For example, when changing f-stops in succession, the dial might go from f2.8, f4, f5.6, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f11, f16, f22. The dial for the shutter speeds also skips around like this.

I can live with these problems by using the camera's controls. The main thing I'm concerned about it the shutter release, and it has a good, solid feel, and it works well.

I'm not going to return the grip, because I suspect the problems with the one I have are typical, and if I exchange it, there will be more of the same. I'm glad to have a grip that is far less expensive than the Nikon version. I can live with the grip's shortcomings.

It's possible that with use, the command dials will begin to work better. I say this because when I first attached the grip to the camera and tried to turn the camera on, nothing happened. But when I removed the battery holder and then put it back into the grip, the camera turned on just fine, and I haven't had any more problems with the camera not powering up. Evidently, there was a problem caused by the contacts having never been used before, and removing the battery holder and reinserting it into the grip cleaned the contacts.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

I have been searching for a good battery grip for my D600 and after watching a lot of reviews on YouTube I took the plunge and bought the Vello. I couldn't be happier with it! It forms to the body perfectly and adds that much needed battery life. The texture is a little different from the body but honestly you really can't tell. I have to say that when I first got it I thought it was broke but stupid be you have to make sure the grip is on also not just the camera lol Great buy and at the best price you can find online!

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

Being the cheapest man on the planet I'm always looking out for a bargain. And this one didn't disappoint. Grip is well built and couldn't match the Nikon overmold grip style any better. These base grips allow you to easily hold the camera for vertical shots. Duplicates most of the main functions of the cameras built in grip. Comes with two battery trays. One for the normal camera batter the other is a tray for AA's. The grip even has a place to store the rubber cover that must be removed from the camera to mount the grip. Great product at a great price.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

I purchased this grip as a reasonable substitute for the Nikon brand battery grip for my D610. Let's face it, Nikon products tend to be more expensive, with good cause. You simply get what you pay for. This grip is a great product, and preforms flawlessly. Now to apply the cost savings where it counts... I see another Nikon lens in my future.

Take caution as time passes

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

Just remember you get what you pay for. This grip did an ok job for a good while but something happened. You always take a risk using third party accessories on your camera. Especially accessories like these that actually connect mechanically and electrically. This grip caused an electrical malfunction and my shutter ended up crashing which resulted in a $250 repair on my camera. Now this in fact may be a rare occurrence but ALWAYS take caution to third party accessories like battery grips. Because these connect electronically, they can potentially damage your camera over time. My recommendation is to stay in brand and spend the extra money for Nikon's grip.

Faulty product...

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

On top of the problem with peeling rubber in the back and very tight screw - multi selector is awful! You can't really select AF point - it is so flimsy I had a really hard time shooting with it yesterday. Returning back for the original Nikon MB-D14. And after research online - figured that it drains batteries as well...

Two Years and Still Running

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

I love this grip.  Its been two years and I just updated all my equipment.  Because I rely so much on user reviews I thought I should contribute!

I've had this grip on my D610 since I purchased the camera.  Its been mounted to tripods, traveled globally, shot on the beaches of Miami in the middle of summer and shot outside in Michigan in the middle of winter.  Knock on wood, I've never had an issue.  It functions whether I use the nikon battery or the watson batteries I purchased seperately.

I have larger hands and this grip made my D610 much easier and comfortable to use.  After two years the quality of the product is apparent by how well its held up.  Again, its been traveled.  I don't abuse my equipment but I use it in the elements.  Im a photographer and thats what we do!  The finish still looks great, all buttons function, locks down well to my camera, sturdy on tripods using all angles.  Solid product.

I have nothing to compare it to with repects to the Nikon brand.  All I have are my personal experiences and the extra coin in my pocket.  Hope this helps.

The fit is perfect and the build quality appears to be very good. It does not feel cheap or flimsy. All the controls function properly and with good tactile feedback. I consider this an excellent product for the money. The only unanswered question is durability; time will tell.

Solid Battery Grip

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

The Vello BG N10 is a solid battery grip. It aligns nicely on the D610 and the grip feels good in your hand. Of course it does add a little bit of weight ( I have relatively small hands but the added weight doesn't really bother me). Some reviews mention having issues with the wheel that screws the grip into the camera but I have not had any problems, it screws on/off with no problems. I still have yet to program my AE-AF button on the grip as I prefer back button focus. Hopefully this function will work with no problems.

SAME AS THE ORIGINAL NIKON. SAME QUALITY. SAME FUNCTIONS. SAME COLOR. SAME FEEL GRIP. BUT CHEAPER. IF YOU WANT TO SPEND MORE JUST BUY THE NIKON ONE. NO DIFFERENCE BETWEN ORIGINAL AND VELLO.

I would pass

By Adam

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

Got this because I shoot a fair amount of portraits. With the 70-200 on the body it starts to get tiring to twist my hand around and hold the camera. This would technically work if you don't care about your productivity but for me, I use a black rapid strap and the weight of the body plus the lens being held by just the battery grip scares me. After hearing lots of folks have no problem I tried the grip, but after testing it and seeing the flex and strain on the body I decided to return the item. So in short it works if you use a light lense and don't use a strap that mounts on the tripod screw.

Comments about Vello BG-N10 Battery Grip for Nikon D600 & D610:

It works as advertised. A very much cheaper solution for Nikon D600/D610 battery grip.
The problem is, if your camera setup will have 70-200mm and a big speedlite mounted on camera this battery grip somehow felt flimsy.
Other than that, all the buttons and dials works just fine.

Works fine, and AF-on does function

A couple of reviewers mentioned that the AF-on function doesn't work.
You need to program the grip button functions separate from the cameras
button functions. And then of course, you need to turn the power on the
grip.

Highly meets my expectations.
Operates acording to the specification, you get the AA accessory and reasonably priced in comparison to Nikon.
For me, it was the additional battery time that I needed while allowing continues shooting unattended.
