General purpose lens for crop sensor walk about. Offering a good range (albeit less than the Nikon 16-85) with excellent sharpness, resolution and color in the center of the image at all FL's. However, on the wider end of things, you cannot get rid of slightly softer sides, even at F9-F11 (the sweet spot for the 17 - 20mm focal lengths).

Better sharpness in the center and intermediate areas that even the 17-55 Nikon.

The macro is good too, offering some creative freedom that the Nikon does not offer.

Unlike most Sigma lenses I have owned (about 20), this is the first to hit focus on just about every shot. AF is fast and silent (nearly), and the OS offers great handhold ability when needed.

Overall conclusion then: Someone coming from the Nikon 16-85 will find this a good step up IMO, and even from the Nikon 17-55/2.8 it offers some performance benefits.

The lens itself is a nice and sharp lens, but Sigma's horrible quality control kills any possibility of taking their lenses seriously, making it not an option for serious professional use. I bought this lens and it was working properly just until days before the warranty expired, when I started having autofocus issues. Very often the autofocus system just does not respond at all and it makes a weird noise, it is like the autofocus hesitates even to start working. Sometimes it will go back to work after some seconds. I sent it to Sigma to be fixed, they "fixed" it (supposedly) but the lens still had the same problem. I sent it back to Sigma and it took 3 months for them to tell me "we can not reproduce the same problem that you are describing", seriously? I wonder if they even have a real camera in their labs to try the lenses on. They sent the lens back to me, after some days I went out to a photoshoot and bang, the same problem, every time even worst. Unfortunately for me, the warranty period was over. Sigma offers a 15 days warranty on their technical services, but I passed already that time by the time that I went out to shoot with this lens (my fault because I did not try the lens immediately after I got it back from their service department, but they did no fix anything on the lens this second time anyways). So, now I am stuck with this 500 $ lens that I can not rely on for a paid photoshoot anymore. Sigma, good bye for ever, you will never get a penny from me again. If you are a serious professional, make yourself a favor, save some more money and get a TRULY PROFESSIONAL lens like Canon, Nikon, Voigtlander or Carl Zeiss lens. Tokina also have a couple of nice lenses that are reliable. Tamron as well is getting a lot better than before and their new SP serie of lenses are very good.

(Almost) A fantastic lens, Nikon mount in my case

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

Well made lens, should last for the long haul. This is my only Sigma lens, I own many Nikon's.
I used this lens on the D500; Sharpness, color and contrast is fantastic, better than expected. Very surprised that the images are exposed dead on and actually sharper than the wonderful Nikon 24-120.
Cons: The lens zoom is backward twist to all the Nikon's, and the manual focus ring spins as the lens hunts auto focuses. Using Nikon's exclusively for years, that backward zoom twist is a challenge to manage. This $500 lens should not spin the focus ting, internal focus is expected. But if you can live with the two cons, you will like the lens.

Worthwhile upgrade

By Bill

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I have only had this lens for a short time but it appears to provide me what I was looking for. I purchased this lens to replace a Nikon 18-70 I was using on my D7100. The Nikon lens is a left over from my D70 days and is not a bad lens at all but I wanted some upgrades. This Sigma lens provides OS which is lacking in the Nikon lens and it also allows for closer focussing. It is also slightly faster. Image quality is very good and for my photography I have not yet encountered any issues. There is a minor annoyance using this lens on the D7100 during image review where you can not immediately scroll around a zoomed image by holding down the multiselector, you must continuously click the multiselector to scroll. There are work arounds for this by doing your zoomed scrolling in live view mode on the camera. I don't do this as it is not a big enough issue for me to bother. For the price, I don't think you can beat this lens.

Nice Size and Weight for a "Standard" DX Zoom Lens

By Bill

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

My wife is the usual user of this lens on her D7100. She likes the size and weight of the camera/lens combination. We would have preferred to buy the Nikon 16-80 DX zoom, but for about half the price, the Sigma lens is a better fit for us. Only negatives 1. Zoom ring works backwards compared to the Nikon standard, and 2. The focus ring moves during auto focus.

I love Sigma lens. It was a tough choice between this lens and Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens. The reason I go with this lens is because Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens having focusing issue on my Nikon D7200 body after I read a few reviews. I have using this lens for the NYC Car Show 2016 and road trip to Montreal. It took amazing photo as an intermediate user myself. It shows great detail of the subject. Yes the lens maybe a little pricey for entry level users, but it does bring the photo into next level.

I bought this lens as a replacement for my kit lens. I'm extremely happy with it. Autofocus is on point. Nice in low light. And the colors are extremely vibrant and beautiful. A HUGE step up. I don't think I'm going to take it off my camera often. Only when shooting wildlife, since I have a 300mm.

Highly recommend for something looking to replace a kit lens and looking for a little extra range.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

This is my first Sigma lens. I was looking for a reasonable priced upgrade for my Nikon 18-70 3.5. I got the Nikon as a kit lens for my first D70 camera. It has been a relatively good lens for a kit lens. I finally decided on the upgrade to the Sigma 17-70 2.8 which turned out to be a good decision for me. The feel of the lens is much more robust than the Nikon. The focus after some testing was spot on. The focus is quick and quiet. The zoom ring is if anything a bit more stiff than the Nikon. I actually find this to be a better feel for me. It just feels more like the other Pro lens that I am using. The images so far have been excellent and overall I feel much sharper than the Nikon. I also love the macro capabilities of this lens. My impression is that for the money, this is a great upgrade to my kit lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I am a wedding photographer using Nikon D7000 with Nikon 18-105mm F3.5-5.6 lens for the past 3 years. However, I had to rent this lens at local camera rental shop for few weeks while my Nikon lens was in service to repair focusing issues (normal wear and tear). After I fell in love with a rental lens, I have purchased a new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 Macro lens using as a prime lens. I like this F2.8 lens especially shooting bride and groom under the low lighting condition at the church without flash. I am satisfied for getting clear and sharp images also able to shoot close up of wedding rings. Only disappointment I had was that first time using this lens focus wasn't getting sharp enough, is that because the lens need to be warmed up or used up for certain number of hours before getting optimum focusing result?

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

I bought this lens as an upgrade from the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, for a Nikon D5200. The auto-focus is fast, and nearly silent. This lens has some barrel distortion, which is greatest at 17mm, and decreases as you zoom out, but it is easily corrected in Lightroom, so shouldn't be an issue. I haven't compared the old Nikon lens it replaced (18-55mm f/3.5) with an identical photo situation, but my impression so far is that it is a sharper lens. It isn't heavy at all, and does not interfere with the camera's built in flash (no shadow). The camera settings for the attached spillway image are: iso100, f/22 (with a .8ND filter), 1/2 second,& 24mm. For the Croton River: iso100, f/22,1/6sec, 70mm. Both shots had a Hoya.8ND filter mounted on the lens, and the camera was on a tripod.

I was looking for something to give me a little wider view than my previous 28-75mm f/2.8 for an upcoming trip. The Sigma 17-70mm fills this requirement nicely along with f/2.8-4 capabilities. The Optical Stabilization is a bonus that I didn't have on my previous lens.
There is some corner softness at 17mm wide open along with some vignetting at this setting. Easily correctable in PS. All-in-all a good value for the money.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Nikon:

This Sigma17-70 MACRO filled a "gap" in my lens assortment left missing with old 60s vintage F-lenses that I really don't want to convert for *just mauna* applications. The auto focus is "fast enough," there is no "lens creep," standard observations of optic quality make me give it an 8 on a 10 scale.I took a leap of faith and received this on a Thursday, then shot (along with the Pros) my son's wedding on Saturday - starting at a "whopping" exposure #21 on the lens. The 17-70 range effectively gives me what I was after in APS-C "Nikon D" for medium range (venue, wild dancing) and close-up (portraits). I did not make a mistake. The results (appx. 400 shots) are excellent- color, moire, sharpness, bokah, edges, etc. I bought this on the "Factory Promotion" 2 weeks ago for $. I'd be "on the fence" @ MSRP $- looking at (more expensive) primes in slightly different ranges. I recommend this lens - it performs more into the "Prime" range, in my estimation. Especially if you can snag it for $. I cannot say whether this lens is lacking "pre-features" that Nikon will add to future bodies, but some naysayers who dismiss (and diss') Sigma, Tamron, and several non-OEM lens crafters are passing-up well designed, constructed, *reasonably-priced* lenses. Give them a try if shopping. (D7200 is platform) --Do not expect light-gathering or action-stopping miracles from 2.8 aperture - but it is more than adequate with proper settings. Good lens.
