There are so many things to like about this lens. I've been looking for a new walk around lens for a while and I did not have a huge budget. This lens fits the bill. Whenever, I use it, I keep saying to myself, "I really like this lens!" The lens is well made, does not feel cheap and is fairly light weight. Bokeh is amazing as well and depending on the situation, you can get some nice effects even at F5.6 which I was surprised at. I think my only slight criticism is that occasionally it can be a little slow to focus in tricky lighting or closeups but it's not a major compliant. I would highly recommend this if you can't afford L glass which was the case with myself.

I shoot a lot of sports and school events. Doing group shots and trying to keep mom and her phone camera out of the frame was always an issue, so when my old 28-70/2.8 was stolen I replaced it with this lens. I felt that the extra zoom range on the wide end would more than compensate for losing one stop of light on the long end. Unfortunately, what I found I was actually giving up was 2-3 stops across the whole zoom range because this lens is just not acceptably sharp until it's stopped down to f8 (f5.6 if you only care about the center of the frame). I kept the lens because the zoom range really is very convenient and the image quality is fine when I'm shooting in daylight or able to use flash and thus stay around f8-f11, but if you need to shoot wide open for lighting or depth of field reasons, look elsewhere.
This is a significant upgrade over kit lenses, and I have recommended it to people on that basis. Just don't expect pro quality wide open.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

You would think I would learn the first time when I bought this lens to not get another one just like it...well I didn't and it did the same thing...after about using it for a year it did the same thing the first one did....bad focus points...not focusing on the object you want..my first lens locked up after a 2 years and second one did the same thing...I learned my lesson now and will NOT buy another Sigma.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I bought this lens to replace an older model that I had dropped. I used it quite a lot, for photographing flowers, landscapes and people. I have to say that this one is an improvement over the old one, right down to the more secure lens cap.
I am really happy to have this new lens, and I hope others will enjoy it as much as I do.

I use this lens for skiing and street, parties, etc.It is a great deal. I just bought the canon f 2.8 24-70 mm. and the sigma does 90% of the canon does and for the 25% of the money. Sigma has IS canon does not.
Canon aperture is 2.8 from 24 mm to 70 mm.However, sigma lens is variable. It is 2.8 only at 17 mm. I cannot tell the difference at short distance.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

      Hello!

I recently purchased this lens to replace my 18-135 canon lens that I lost in an accident, I wanted something I could shoot large groups with, with out having to back up too far, let me just say this lens is amazing for large groups!! At a full 17mm at a 4.0 or 5.6 matched with a 430EXII flash make large group photos easy, the 2.8 is only available from 17mm to about 20mm so you don't get much zoom range from the 2.8 capability, that is about the only down side, but a lens for less then 5 Benjamins to shoot large groups like a 24-70 is a pretty awesome thing. having the range at 17mm paired with the 72mm width is just so awesome to shoot with. The overall build of the lens reminds me a bit of the Nikon construction, it feels tight and strong with a real stiff even slider for the range adjustment, after using the lens for just a short period of time, I will say I am very pleased with sigma quality! So if you want a lens that will shoot huge group photos, large open landscapes, maybe the back of the church with the wedding party in front, this lens will do the job, it won't do everything a 24-70 can, but it does an amazing job!

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I've owned this lens since early 2012 and don't get me wrong, it was my go to lens since! Yet, lately the sharpness and focus time is lacking. I do a lot of portraits as well as land scape and unless you have that perfect cloudy day with a lot of sun behind it, your not going to get the shots you want. At least not four years after buying the lens. I've taken care of it and kept it in perfect condition yet it's just lacking for me. Maybe as a first lens to upgrade to from the kit it's okay, but overall I want to keep using the lens but I think it's time for me to move on to some Canon glass.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I have been looking for a light weight f2.8 lens for use when hiking. I was somewhat dubious but in seeing the reviews on the B&H site, I decided to go for it and I'm happy that I did. The lens, while the housing is made of plastic, has a good heft to it. Also, the zoom ring is easy to rotate, has enough internal tension to prevent creeping. The optics are sharp and I like the macro capability. I don't think a person would go wrong with this as a walk around lens. Also important, the price won't break the bank. It's not a "L" lens but it met my expectations.

I bought this lens for a few reasons. One, I have been extremely pleased with my purchase of the Sigma 150-600. Two, I needed to upgrade my kit lens focal void, as I sold back my old gear. Three, I have a couple of cameras and when I setup for night shots or star trails, have two wide angle, fast aperture lenses is nice. After using this lens for a little over a month, I have come back with pleasing results to show. This lens has more than paid for itself already! After finding the best spot for infinity manual focus in nightscape shots, I am absolutely thrilled. I have also done portrait and macro work with the lens, and love what it has produced for me.

I have used mine for over a year on first a Canon XTi, and now a T5i (both crop sensors). I bought it to replace a Canon 18-85S when it no longer focused with AF on.

I use it as my everyday walk about lens. It was durable enough to withstand an impact that shattered the protective UV filter and crack my XTi camera body. If something unexpected happens to this one, I will probably buy another.

Note: I usually set my exposure at 1/3 underexposed.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I bought this lens for my 60D and to compliment Canon L, & Tamron SP... 70-300mm lens. I have a Canon 24-105mm L and thought this a good lens to use when not taking the Canon out. But to my surprise when comparing these 2 lens, I discovered my Canon L was soft in comparison, the Sigma 17-70mm also had better color, contrast, and less flair. That was hard for me to accept at 1st, that this inexpensive Sigma was out performing or matching my Canon L, and I thought I must be doing something wrong. But after more testing and comparing the results were correct. The Canon was softer. The Sigma does have burrel distortion at 17mm, but I set it most times at 24mm focal range on the wide end to get around that. The Canon 24-105mm L is better build and does have weather sealing, but costs a lot more. I handle my gear gently, I'm not a Pro, and don't use my gear out in extreme weather. For the saved money between the 2, the sigma a better value. Much as I loved my 24-105mm L I sold it. In fact, I'm not sure I'll be buying anymore Canon L's unless I have some need. Unless I turn Pro and have a need for Pro gear, I think I can find quality/IQ in lens that will satisfy my needs, that won't break the bank. Canon L lens is great for those who need quality on that level. But I'm finding that for the average peep like me it may be a waste of good money and overkill. I was told that very thing by some Pros when I 1st got into Photography. But I had to learn the hard way....and that can be costly.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

This is a great carry around lens. I have had it on my Canon 70D since I received it. It's light weight and produces sharp photos. Love it for portraits too! I haven't found anything yet that I don't like about this lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

I love this lens. I got it for indoor family gatherings and as a walk-around lens. It fulfills both needs quite nicely. It has a really nice closeup feature. Takes great closeup flower picture. They'll have to pry this one from my cold, dead hands. My only minor complaint is that I wish it had full time manual focusing. Then I'd give it 5 stars. If I could, I'd give it 4.5 stars right now but that's not possible.

Comments about Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon:

Has more range of zoom than a straight f/2.8 lens but costs much less! All photos I have taken are crisp and sharp! Much better than the normal kit lens. Coupled with a 70-200mm zoom gives a great range for most of my photography. This has been a very wise decision to purchase!
