Been doing computer based recording for some time and found that the hassles of setting up and tearing down keep me from recording. The DP-008EX is the opposite - it's an invitation to get it out any time and start some basic ideas, then refine them and add the other parts. With the XLRs, phantom power, dynamics processing, and mastering capabilities it makes producing simple but listenable music a snap. Besides, I can do my mixes in my easy chair...

Super great piece of recording equipment. Not so easy to use out of the box but easy enough to crack open the manual and get rolling.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

Many many years ago I purchased the cassette portastudio and had a great time with it. Then, the DP-006 track (which is really just a 4 track with two stereo tracks), but then to expand my work I had to bounce tracks thus losing the ability to fine tune the bounced tracks upon mastering. This DP-008EX eliminates all that with eight individual tracks (unless you want to emulate an entire orchestra). With this unit and a keyboard synthesizer you can sound like the greatest rock and roll band in the world all by yourself.

Oh yeah, I found B&H Photo and Video on the Tascam website. Coudos and congratuations to B&H for their great prices and service. And a thank you B&H for observing those days of spirituality. We need so much more of that in our great Country.

I love it, but...

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

It's size is perfect, actual dials is nice. Sound quality is amazing. I have been using porta-studios since the cassette 4-track days and they all follow the same basic setup and I enjoy the simplicity. I do have a couple minor gripes. I find it surprising that in 2017 this only has basic fx for track recording (compression, reverb etc.). Maybe it's because it's a budget porta-studio but for on the go recording some distortions etc. built in would be nice, also some simple drum loops in addition to the metronome would have been nice but not deal breakers by any means.

I do have one major complaint, battery life and the fact the power supply does not come with the product and must be purchased separately, that is honestly a bit cheap from Tascam for such a good product line.

Other than that it works flawlessly and as expected, top notch product especially for the price.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

I wish I would've waited a week to purchase this recorder. Twenty bucks cheaper. Anyways this recorder has great sound. The programming, assignment of tracks, and lack of power unit are the negatives. For the price of this unit time could've been taken to make it better. Overall it will do what you need it for, however it will take time. Can't take credit for this this statement. Someone nailed it. "This unit is best for a solo artist doing demo tracks" Your taking your time inputing individual tracks.

Very good product with a few minor annoyances

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

This is a straightforward multi-track recorder with no bells and whistles. As such it's extremely easy to use, even for someone who hasn't been exposed to much technology. All levels and settings are represented by the knobs, so, for most stuff you are not digging through menus (unless you want to alter the reverb type, or apply EQ or compression). The advantage of this is you spend more time thinking about your music and less time tweaking settings.
A few things that it lacks (and don't get me wrong, I do love this unit for what it does):
- It has a loop facility to loop a section of the track (just for playback). There is a pause after each loop, and you can't get rid of this, the minimum pause is 1 second. They should have made the minimum 0 seconds so that you could have a smooth loop.
- When loading a song, the levels and pan position of each track in the song is set to the current levels represented by the actual knobs at the time you load the song. So you will have to readjust all the levels to match what they were when you saved the song.
- The songs are stored in a proprietary format in a proprietary partition on the SD card. To get the individual tracks onto your computer, you need to do an "export" from the unit which creates WAV format on the FAT partition. It's pretty easy to do this, however you can't just pop the SD card in your computer and copy the wav files off it.
- The level meters seem to represent the original recorded volume of the track as opposed to the level you are adjusting it to with the knob (I imagine some people might see this as an advantage)
- There is a mixdown mode and a mastering mode. They could have combined these. Also you have to listen to your whole track in realtime for both these modes.
- No concept of bars/beats except for metronome, so editing tracks takes longer to slice and dice.
Overall, for the price it's a no-brainer. Definitely a good buy

Great Unit. Incredible Quality.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

I love this little recorder. The mastering features are a great addition to the newer version. The compressors are welcome too. Auto punch is great for avoiding button noise when using the internal mikes to mic a guitar amp. Being able to make a master starting and ending anywhere within the song allows me to try different ideas on top of each other within one song. Copy the song after eight tracks are recorded and make bounces in the copied song, thereby not losing any original tracks. I used a cassette porta-studio in the 90s and the DP008EX carries the same spirit of those old machines! They sound great and it is easy to go from inspiration to working demo. The limit of only being able to record two tracks at a time isn't a limitation for me, but for recording a whole band it could be an issue unless overdubbing isn't out of the question. I take this with me everywhere. I send tracks out and receive tracks back in collaboration with other musicians using 44.1 kHz 16 bit WAV format. Great!!
B&H has been incredibly helpful. The best store, PERIOD!

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

I like this little machine. It seems mostly a great inheritor of the portastudio bloodline, several of which I had decades ago.
Pros: good mics, effective eq, good processing time in mtr mode, pleasant reverbs, knobs for quick use of good 'feel'.
Cons: slow processing (files have to be converted to send to pc/mac), copying is complicated by having on time display (no measures), so a calculation is required for accurate copy and paste.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

This recorder has the option to be very simple or detailed. I use it heavily to make sample tracks, and I also find me using the DAW to just make the whole song instead of tinkering on the computer. I'm starting to think the simplicity of it will outlast any computer and I know I won't have to worry about having to update software, hardware, monitors etc. I use my old PSP charging cord and a 5 volt cellphone wall plug for power.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

I love this thing. I have an extensive in-home studio with professional level mics, compressors, eq's etc. I was always hoping for a quick sketchpad for on the road. I have my laptop of course but dragging along microphones, stands, cables, audio interface etc. was not convenient in the least. This accomplishes all that and the ease of operation is as simple as the old cassette recorder/players. The built-in microphones are impressive for acoustic guitar and singing. The ease of building up tracks for harmonies or additional instrument tracks through line and guitar DI inputs is fabulous. It includes, reverb, dynamics and equalization on each channel. It's an incredible little sketch pad. You can output 44.1/16 bit wav files for import into your "back home" DAW. This has been one of my best additions to capturing on-the-spot recordings. The quality is very good. Can't say enough.

  • Power Supply Is A Must

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

I bought this to use as a recorder for my drums when I accompany play-along music. Granted, it's a little overkill for simple playalong recording, but I got it to give me growth capability as I get deeper into recording, and for that the price point made it an excellent choice. Despite aging hands and eyes, I find the controls relatively easy to use, though being a little larger wouldn't hurt. The operational modes and menues can be a little confusing at first, but it didn't take long to figure out how to get going, and within no time I was layering percussion parts. The bottom line is that while it may seem daunting, the learning curve really isn't that steep. Definitely get the power supply, though. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 since I've only had it a short time, also because I have not made use of the internal mics.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX 8-Track Digital Pocketstudio:

I purchased the DP-008EX for fun and ease of use. I am a solo musician and my main use is of course multi-track layering. Having had previously only used software based DAWs. I found this item to be very similar. I was very comfortable with the logical control layout and intuitive interface. The audio quality from both the internal mics and line inputs were amazing. The added convenience of basic effects like reverb, an on-board tuner and metronome coupled with the portability of being battery powered make this my "idea sketchpad for song structures." I am completely loving this purchase.
