This has got to be one of the best lenses in this price category! I have owned both the 70-200 2.8 II is and now the non-is version and I have been impressed with both on my 5D Mk2. I sold off my IS version a few years ago when careers changed and I felt like it was too much money to have sitting around in a bag hardly being used. Now things have changed and it was time for another long lens, and of course I spent many late nights reading reviews trying to justify the 1000+ bump to IS, or trying to convince myself that this was the way to go. I really feel like this was the right call and I have zero regrets. The key to using this lens, handheld or otherwise, is nothing new, you need to shoot with proper technique. Shutter speeds above 1/320, proper support of the lens while shooting, proper breathing technique, bump your iso if the camera can handle it, and overall common sense, if you can use a set of sticks go for it but it is by no means necessary. Obviously this lens is built like a tank and will take its toll on you lugging it around all day, you can eliminate some of that strain with a proper shoulder strap. I know when I bought the IS version a few years ago I loved it and I think I spent too much time on the internet listing to people tell me its a must have, well its not. Harkin back to the '"olden days" of film and long lens photography, we did not need Photoshop, we did not need IS or VR, we needed good camera technique to lock down a great shot. Buy this lens and practice, it will make you a better photographer. Just my 2 cents.

Just finished using this lens and think it's time to submit my review especially to compare it with it's siblings.

I think this focal-range should be in every photography's case. It's so useful in many scenarios. From portrait to wildlife to event photography. One of the best values for sure.

But this lens in particular feels like the outsider. It has the focal length and build quality. But two big problems: image-sharpness and lens-weight. And really, it's the former.

Even when you've gotten the sharpest image possible this lens is capable of, you're going to need to sharpen in post. I use f2.8 - f5.6 with the lens and I always need to sharpen quite a bit. It's not horrible. But for the money and reputation, you should expect better.

And this thing heavy. If you're hand-holding this lens for a couple of hours or more, your arm will get tired. And I'm a pretty strong guy. Then it's tough to get a clean shot because you're getting fatigued.

If you must get a Canon 70-200mm 'L' lens and could live without f2.8, and you probably can, get the non-stabilized f4 version. Except for the extra stop, I think the f4 version is a superior lens. Much less expensive too.

The 2.8L IS II is the big bad brother and it's sharpness is amazing. Only problem is that it's even heavier than the non-IS 2.8L and 2x the price. But if you're absolutely set on this focal length and aperture, save for this version. Or rent it for paid gigs until you can afford it. It's a lens you can easily keep for 10 years. It's worth the investment if you use it a lot.

I want to like this lens so much. But it's performance and weight issues keep it far behind many great alternatives even outside of Canon.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

The clarity and speed of this lens makes it worth the price. If you are only going to use the lens outside you can always buy the f4 version for much less money. But if you have the money...this lens is a must buy.

This is my dream lens. The focus is great, much better than my 4.5-5.6s. It is heavy, but you get used to the weight. Definitely recommend!

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

I researched which 70-200mm lens to buy for about 2-3 years and finally ended up with this one at very last moment.
I could not afford 70-200m F2.8 IS version so it was clearly out from the scene although it's the perfect lens. So I ended up with F4 versions and this F2.8 non IS version. I read that images from F4 non IS version is crisp clear and I thought I would go for that. However, at the very last moment one of my very good friend insisted I have to go for F2.8 version. Now I'm thanking him for that advise. F2.8 has a clear advantage. I have not handled other three 70-200 lenses in this range but I know for sure, I (or my friend) made the right decision by choosing this.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

I have been a full time professional commercial/fashion photographer for the last 15 years and purchased this lens maybe eight years ago when I first purchased 2 canon 5d mk II cameras. Since then I have done nearly 7500 jobs and have made more money with this very lens then you can imagine. One of my interns brought in the newer updated version and I tried it and was just fine with my old version one. If there was a lens that I considered pure perfection, it would be this one. I was shooting an ad campaign for a major client and one of the marketing directors knocked this lens off of my cart by accident, causing it to fall nearly 4 feet to the concrete floor. I couldn't believe that it only caused a small scratch on the outer barrel! Im not saying this would happen every time but its definitely a testament to canon's build quality. Its built like a military weapon and renders absolutely stunning photographs. I use this lens for about 75% of my commercial, fashion and editorial work and still see no reason to update it to the newest version. Do yourself a favor and purchase this lens as your primary piece of glass. I would consider this to be a mMUST have for aspiring/pro photographers.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens:

I just started using this lens and it's my first telephoto/zoom lens. I had to save some money and not get the IS, but this lens is amazing even without it. I'm sure the IS is worth the extra money, but the price jump was too much for me. I use with a tripod and the pictures are just as crisp.

The auto-focus is a little slow but I think it's the way zoom lenses are. The case, caps, and hoods are just what you'd expect from Canon; amazing.

This is the first L series lens that I have bought, this lens wonderful. I have only had this lens for a couple of weeks but I have taken over 1k photos with it. The quality of the pictures have improved from the ones that I have taken with the previous lens that I had. The focus is very fast. The only downside is that this lens does not have image stabilization but not a problem, I just couldn't afford the the 70-200 2.8 with image stabilization. I'm using this lens on the 7D Mark II and the two together are great.
