I rented this lens and was so impressed at how well it performed on my D7100 and D800 I ended up buying it. It's light, very sharp, has good Brokeh for an UWA lens and doesn't get in your way. I fully intended on buying the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR having previously owned that great lens but for the difference in weight and price it just didn't make sense to me. This is an exceptional landscape lens and while the 16-35mm has a subtle edge in terms of color it is very heavy and not something I want to lug around all day in the back country. They are both very sharp but I think the 18-35mm edges out the 16-35mm at 18mm and 35mm in terms of sharpness. You can talk all day about distortion and corner to corner sharpness with these UWA lenses but as a Landscape photographer those issues are not field relevant for me. If you need to shoot architecture just take out a second mortgage and get the stellar Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 or a Zeiss UWA and be happy. I have included several sample images, one of Lake Tahoe taken with the 18-35mm on my D7100. The image of the old shack was captured with the 18-35mm on my D800 and shows how well the 18-35mm performs on the 36MP sensor both in terms of sharpness and color. In the end, $ buys allot of gear and I was able to buy a new 18-35mm lens from B&H with a 5 year warranty instead of buying a used 16-35mm. I would highly recommend this lens for the majority of shooters who don't need VR.

After reading all of the glowing consumer reviews on this lens, my plan was to replace my Tokina 17-35 f 4 lens with this lens. But after comparing this lens side by side to the Tokina I did not see enough performance improvement to replace it. The Tokina is ok and this lens is ok as well but nothing more. In the consumer reviews I saw this Nikon lens compared to the Nikon 70-200 f 4 lens but there is no comparison in my opinion ( I own the 70-200 mm lens). This lens does what it is suppose to do adequately in a smaller, lighter package. I did return the Nikon 18-35mm lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

Sadly, my reason for purchase is that I originally purchased this lens in 2004 and that one got STOLEN. I was heartsick, but knew that I got so much use out of this lens I just had to replace it with an identical one.
I use this primarily for weddings, and it has become one of my favorite lenses, filling a major need as a zoom in the wide angle range. I find this lens tack sharp, quick to focus, light, and it gives me a visual perspective I can't get with any other lens in my case.

LOVE THIS ULTRA WIDE

By California Guy

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

I wanted an ultra wide for my Nikon D750 to supplement my Nikkor 28-300. It was a decision between the Nikkor 16-35mm or this 18-35. DxO Mark says that for my D750, this 18-35 would be sharper than the more expensive 16-35mm. Wow. Also, I have a Sigma 15mm fisheye if I would, for any possible reason, need the width of a 15mm. I could straightened the distortion in post. Anyhow, this was a no-brainer. I ordered this 18-35mm and couldn't be happier. The pictures are sharp and I absolutely love how light this puppy is. BTW, if you order this lens, remember, it has no VR. Remember, VR is not important with this type of lens.

I like to pack light and I can't afford prime lenses . This is a budget alternative to prime lens and lighter for your bag . I took few test shots and I am very happy.

Great lens!

By Karen

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

I am loving this lens, i have a nice sharp copy and for landscapes it is wonderful! For the $$ it is a great option if the 16-35 f/4 or 14-24mm f/2.8 is not in your price range. It is light weight but built well and for hiking or traveling with, it is a dream. I know it is not as well made as the other 2 lenses mentioned but it still performs wonderfully.
I have used it for astro photography and it is good but if you want to keep your ISO low for faster exposure time (shutter speed) then having f2.8 and faster would be better. Someday i may purchase the 14-24mm if i continue regular milky way shooting but for now, this does me just fine.

Surprisingly strong performer!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

I bought this lens mainly for travel, since it is lightweight, compact and affordable compared to the 14-24 or 16-35 options. What I did not appreciate is how sharp it is and how versatile that range can be for landscapes and interiors, where I used to use the 20mm f2.8D to go along with my 24-120 zoom. I was a bit on the fence about buying this lens because of it variable aperture and lack of VR, but I am now very happy I did.

So far I'm loving this lens, lightweight and feels next to nothing when attached to my Nikon D750. Produces excellent images and at the widest end its almost comparable to a 20mm 1.8 prime lens. This will be my backpacking/hiking lens this summer.

I was considering the 16-35mm f4 but decided that this would provide the WA just as well for my purposes at a significant savings. I travel a lot and the weight was also a factor. With this, my 24-85mm f2.8-4.0 and the 70-300mm VR I can cover everything from 18 to 300mm with a bit of overlap to minimize lens swaps on my D750 with a kit that packs easily in a messenger bag.

I use a D800 and the wonderful, but big/heavy 14-24 f2.8 Nikkor. I was hoping to use this lens as an acceptable alternative for travel. I was impressed by the stunning eval at DP Review. Well... maybe I got a bad copy, but wow, it did not meet my expectations. Did both target tests and real life "brick wall" type tests. It is fairly sharp on center, but the sides and corners are so bad I had to return it. If you try this lens, do some serious testing before to decide to keep yours.

It gives me fast focus and a great depth of field, and nice sharp images. I am completely happy with this lens and would recommend it to others, pro, serious amateur, or whomever. It provides excellent value at a very affordable price. And it is "genuine Nikon".

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens:

So I was looking for an ultra wide lens.

It came down to Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 (to big and heavy) but best lens out there. Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 (to big and heavy) awesome lens though. Nikon 16-35mm f/4 that is popular and has 2mm extra width on the wide end compared to 18-35mm. The 16-35mm f/4 is a bigger sized lens and heavier and per many reviews not as sharp but has VR big plus... I really felt that I was gambling when I bought the 18-35mm. Was it going to be good enough???

I really wanted a light weight lens that would balance well on my D750. I travel a lot!!! I have a 24-70mm f/2.8 that mostly stays at home. To big and heavy for the amount of traveling that I do, if you ask me. The 16-35mm f/4 is similar to the 24-70 in size and a little lighter weight. The 18-35mm on the other hand is light as a feather in comparison... So I was prepared to trade a smidget of picture quality for less weight....

I have to say I did not expect the 18-35mm to be as sharp as it is. I was actually floored by how good the pictures are. It is a Keeper for sure.

Here is the caveat with this lens. I consider this lens a daytime lens. As long as you have enough light this lens is fantastic. It does not have VR so low light hand held is a no go if you ask me. If you bring a tripod you will get very, very, sharp low light pictures.

I'd say this... if you are very disciplined you will probably get better night pictures with the 18-35mm without VR than with the 16-35mm with Vr since you will not be foolish enough to use Vr instead of a tripod. Tripod always wins!!!

My copy of the 18-35mm is amazingly good! I give it 2 thumbs up.

I have owned the Nikon 16-35 f/4 and still own the venerable 14-24 f/2.8. This is a great LIGHTWEIGHT option to add to the kit. It is extremely sharp with accurate focus. Also it has a 77mm filter thread so all my usual filters can be used without having to use the custom filters and holders for the 14-24. All lenses are compromises in some way and if you need a great option when space is limited and need to use your usual filters this is a no-brainer. Obviously it doesn't have VR or nano coating but optically I think it is equal or superior to the 16-35.

I bought this after much research and reading reviews. I wanted wider but it goes wide enuf for me. It turns out to be a good quality, "low cost" option even though, at $, I don't consider it low cost but it's all relative when you start looking at the options, 16-35, 17-35, 15-30, etc. It's a very versatile landscape lens and everything has come through looking quite sharp at both focal extremes. It's quite plasticky for the money but I don't see that affecting longevity. The front element is large, 77mm, so get a filter to protect first thing. This lens does not have IS but that's not uncommon at these focal lengths. If you have to have IS next best step would be Nikon 16-35 at about a $ upside. To me, wasn't that important as I'm using a tripod often with this lens. Remember ,too, that this lens is more than 1/2 pound lighter than the 16-35 and that's important to me. All in all I'm very pleased after taking a while to figure out what I wanted!!

It allows a much more realistic view when close to the intended subject.

I'd love a faster lens, but the price on this lens is within my budget.

                The lens is incredibly sharp.

This is a sharp lens. I had the older 18-35 mm before and was nervous about spending $ to replace a lens I already have, not to mention it was working fine for me too. But this lens has proven to be worth the upgrade. Sturdy construction, and not too heave, and sharp. DXO was right!
