Absolutely love this lens

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

Absolutely love this lens, many steps up quality-wise from the stock 18-55mm lens that comes with the Nikon D3300. Infinitely sharper, love the bokeh effect you can get with it, love how bright it is, great for low level lighting situations. You can feel how solidly it's constructed the moment you get your hands on it and begin to adjust focus.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I bought the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art in anticipation of the arrival of my first grand child. Wanted a high quality lens that approximated the 35 and 50mm lenses that I learned photography on in the 60's and 70's.
This lens fits the bill and matched with my D7100 worked just as I hoped.
Excellent in indoor available light. Just the right (for me) focus length to photograph a newborn and his parents.
No focus issues that other people have talked about. Worked great right out of the box. Again. I am very pleased!

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

This lens replaced my 35mm 1.8. I use it mostly for video. It works well in low light and provides a great image. My other options for a prime lens were much more expensive. I am very happy with this lens.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

Ok, I really love Sigma and own a few Art Lenses and non Art lenses and was hoping to love this lens too. But I cannot give it a 5 star but I find that this lens is very inconsistent. I shoot with a D7100 and when shooting with the 30mm it would be fabulous like the other lenses, But never consistent. One image would be tack sharp within a certain amount of feet but once I back up to about 8 feet or more the focus because frustratingly inconsistent. It is only around 8 feet or more does this happen. Shooting newborns or portraits at a close range I have very little problems but shooting a little further back for a wider shot I get really sad, because I really want to love this lens like I love my others.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

If you're reading this, you already know about the sharpness and great optics. I used the lens for a few days and immediately my pictures looked better, without me doing anything differently...

But, I took a lot fewer pictures in those few days. I purchased this as an upgrade from the 35/1.8 DX lens. There is no comparison between the lenses, the Sigma is superior in every area. Except weight.

It is SO heavy. Really throws off the balance on a DX body (I have 7100), impossible to move around without holding the lens to your side, just ergonomically terrible. They weren't kidding when they said its an Art lens - this is not a throw on and walk around lens. I didn't really read the specs, and I thought this was going to be a bit heavier than the amazing 50mm 1.4G at a much more usable angle of view for DX. Alas, this is not that...

I returned it and went with 28mm 1.8G instead. Its about the same price for the 28/1.8G on the used market as this lens is new, plus the 28 is a Nikon, has the N coating, and can be used as a wide angle on a FX body. If you ever upgrade from DX to FX, this expensive prime becomes useless.

Honestly, I think this lens was invented for internet forum pixel peepers. If you require this level of optics on your lens, you're probably shooting on FX cameras, or using a Zeiss.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

This lens brings me back to the 1960's when all I had for my Nikon F was a "normal" 50mm lens.

This Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens provides my Nikon D7100 with a "normal" lens experience. I think it equates to about a 45mm lens (for 35mm cameras).

First, the autofocus works perfectly with my D7100.

Second, this lens provides sharp images (except at the edges at f:1.4).

Third, at f:1.4 I can shoot in low light conditions at ISO 400 or lower. (Actually, I prefer setting ISO to AUTO and using Manual mode. In this way I can adjust shutter speed and f-stop by looking through the viewfinder.)

I highly recommend this lens for use on any Nikon DX camera. By the way, this is my first non-Nikkor purchase since 1968!

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I really wanted to like this lens and tried about hundred shots in different settings and locations. It gave me beautiful Bokeh in some pictures when the subject was sharp, but other times, it was blurry everywhere. The focusing was slow, and I missed few great shots.I had bought it from B&H back in Jan 2014, but I got the lemon. B&H was great in service after one quick email. I returned it and got a Nikon instead. The Nikon 2.8 did not have that warm and special Bokeh of this lens, but it gave me consistent output. Overall, if you're taking shots with a great deal of time to adjust, take the chance on this lens, but if you need that shot, I would not count on this.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

This is by far my favorite lens for a crop sensor (DX) body. My main camera is a D4, and I use Sigma's 50mm and new 35mm 1.4 lenses most with that body. I also own a D7100, which I bought this lens for times I did not want to lug around my beasty D4. As a professional photographer, I want and need the best glass for my work. I have owned and used Nikon's 35mm DX lens on a D300, and it was just okay and felt cheap, like a toy lens. This does not feel cheap, it has a solid build and beautiful design. I personally like the bigger lens hood that it comes with, it adds a "pro" look to the lens. The weight is just right, not heavy and not super light. But besides looks and construction, this lens is sharp and focuses fast. Those are biggies for me, and I am very pleased in those two areas. Color and contrast is excellent. Almost zero vignette or distortion on the edges, which is great. If your thing is silent focus, this has it. One of the things you'll love is how close you can focus to your subject versus using a 50mm on a full frame camera body. You can get very close to things, which is great for shooting details at events like weddings. You may notice some chromatic aberrations when shooting wide open, but even Canon and Nikon's best 50mm lenses have that, and its easily correctable in Lightroom. Its worth the price, you will not be disappointed!

Build quality is beautiful. I love how sturdy this lens feels.
Image quality is great as well.
Sharpness wise, it's a little bit soft at 1.4 but it still looks great! After 1.6 it's quite good.
The focus motor is very quiet and does a great job focusing in low light.

All around, I'm very happy with this lens.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

I compared this with the Nikon 35mm 1.8G AF-S DX, and the Nikon 28mm 1.8G AF-S. In relation to those, this has a much nicer manual focus ring, more smooth and well dampened. The color is slightly warmer. It is a little 'brighter' than the 35mm, and the 28mm is noticeably brighter than the other two. The Bokeh on the 35 is the least desirable; this and the 28 look identical; neither comes near premium lenses like the Nikon 85 1.4. Overall I would rate them in terms of their price, with this one falling in the middle - but the actual difference in IQ and sharpness is very very slight between all three (at least the samples I tried). Those on a budget may prefer the Nikon 35mm, and those wanting the best should consider the Nikon 35 1.4 or a Zeiss. I did not try the popular Sigma 35 1.4 that works on full frame. I did find the lens a little heavy on my D7000 but some will like the weight.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens for Nikon:

My first prime lens in a number of years and 2nd Sigma. Convenience of 1.4 is very good. Good sharpness and good handling. Great buy for the buck.
