What a great little gem this lens it. Top quality for a reasonable price which is so rare with lenses. It's so versatile as it is wide enough for landscapes and tight enough for some creative portraiture. I shoot products and food and I'm including a sample so you can see what this is capable of. Obviously, none of us want to switch back and forth between lenses which is why we typically get the 24-70mm or 16-35 which are great lenses! But fixed are just better plus you're getting almost a full stop more light on this than the zoom lens and for the price I love having a few inexpensive fixed around that I'm not scared of breaking to backup my 24-70mm. The best part about them is that they are equal if not better than the same focal length on the zooms! Great buys.

First if you are buying this lens for crop body walk straight away. Having  this 35 and 35 1.8 dx and i must say they are not comparable at open apertures. 1.8 just wins. For FX users it is a bargain as from F2.5-2.8 delivers pretty god results. Corner sharpness is terrible but if you are portrait photographer this will not be much of an issue. Did not find any problems related to Af accuracy or speed.

A secret gem

By michael

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D Lens:

Yannick Khong turned me on to the secret of low element lenses and this is the second gem I purchased. The other being the 105/2 which is more difficult for me to use (specialized, I suppose) but has that same rich tonality and three dimensional image rendering.

The market may be moving to f1.4 and everything sharp! but that does nothing for me. I want timeless photos of my family and this lens is my precious. On my D750 it's as light as could be. Good AF. Files that require little work in Lightroom. And files that gives me what a crave, depth rendition that is life like.

Small and perfect

By Susan

from Berkshire County

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D Lens:

This lens takes its fair share of dissing on photography forums. I have several of the 1.4 lenses... 24, 50, and 85. So you would expect me to buy the 35 f/1.4, wouldn't you?

While I do love my 1.4 primes, I felt that the 35 was too close to both the 50 and the 24, and I did not want to trade those. Of course I could simplify and get the 35, 58 and new 105, as other people seem to be doing, but I love what I have already, which includes the primes already mentioned plus 20 f/1.8, 60 f/2.8D, 105 Micro VR, 135 DC, 200 f/4 Micro, and the new 200-500 f/5.6.

(Also I am more of a documentary photographer, I hardly ever shoot portraits. If I was a portrait shooter, the 35, 58 and new 105 would make more sense.)

So the short of it is, I have a lot. It's heavy. The 20 f/1.8 is great, but it's not my intent to get all of those lenses... They feel cheap compared the 1.4 primes. And they feel cheap compared to the solid feeling D lenses. Yes, IQ from the 20 is great.

I agonized over the choice between this old D, the 1.8 and the 1.4, even though I can't afford the 1.4 right now... I realized that I wasn't even sure I would like this focal length. I have a number of D lenses already and they are not old. I have bought all my D lenses in the last few years.

I don't get why others are all snarky about this adorable 35 f/2D. It is impossibly cute and small and my shoulder thanks me.

Plus, I like the images I get with it on my D5. I'm sure it will perform like a champ on my Df and D700 too. Small, sharp and affordable. I like color and contrast from the D series. What is not to love?

Let others buy the 1.8 and the 1.4. Me, I like the D. What a deal!

It's all about tonality

By alansf

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D Lens:

I love good photographs and pay particular attention to the tonality of black and white photos. This is where film really shines. In digital, the emphasis in new lens design seems to be "sharpness". To me this is sort of a red herring. Tonality is the lifelike rendering os shadows, mid tones and highlights. This vintage lens has fewer elements which I believe leads to better tonality. Great lens at a reasonable price. I prefer the D series Nikkor lenses if I can find them, especially for portraits. A perfect match for the vintage Nikon D700.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D Lens:

I use this lense primarily for Landscape photography (among other things) and coupled with my older D700 FX camera, I get nice, sharp images from edge to edge. Prime lenses are the best and this little gem is a lense you can count on everytime.

Since I use the Lee Filter system (also purchased from B&H Photo & Video), my only complaint is the lense does not stand out as long as I would like it to on my camera.

The photos say it all though.

Thank you to B&H for providing great products and services!

    sharp lens

    By Mike

    from New York NY

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D Lens:

I have only used this lens for two weeks now and I already love it. It is ridiculously sharp and I notice only minimal distortion. Using the lens on manual settings is fantastic, the lens handles really really well and I like the ease of focusing. I do notice the picture not being sharp when I use autofocus, but it could be since it is an FX lens and I am using it on a D7000, which is a DX sensor camera. Overall I love this lens. Fantastic quality, I think it will last me a long time.

My favorite lens is big and heavy (24-70mm 2.8) and, being a mom of 2 small kids, sometimes I just don't feel like taking my camera with me, so I decided to buy this one which is small and light, it makes a huge difference for me. I use it for everyday pictures of my family, indoor story telling or quick trips to the park. Image quality is great, I use it on my D800 but haven't tested yet on my D90.

I use this on a D700, but have also thrown it on my D70s a few times. I find it's FOV perfect as well as it's bokeh characteristics. The build quality is top notch and it feels like a real lens in my hands. It also seems to autofocus faster than the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 DX AF-S, and I may just recommend this over that for DX cameras. It greats real close to subjects and I enjoy it for the casual portrait and as a walk-about lens.

The 35mm focal length is a classic and so useful as an all around choice. I was trying to decide between the new 35mm/f1.8 and the classic f/2. For the money, the f/2 version can't be beat. It is the perfect companion for my Df in everyday use. The combination of size, weight and sharpness makes it ideal. I use it for a walking around lens on the street as well as for family photo oppurtunities. The extra field of view makes it ideal. The lens is lightweight, but feels very solid and is still made in Japan! Just get one, you won't be disappointed!

Very nice accurate and fast lens for either format. For a DX it is a perfect 50mm equivalent (for those of us who grew up with silver). I also love the construction on this as compared to the G lens series. This along with the 50 f1:1.4 D are two prime lenses everyone must have.

Have always wanted this lens. Own most of Nikon primes and have for years. This is not latest 1.4 rendition range, but this older lens making design thick, polished glass gives a special quality to the finished image. Shoot a lot of scenics and am enjoying looking at the post view shot in the display of the clarity of the scene reproduced thru this lens glass. (PS-would probably purchase the new 1.4-1.8 range being popularized today if I were starting out).

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D Lens:

This is a fantastic lens for my DF and my D90. Very fast AF, sharp across the field. I prefer it to the 50mm for many shoots.
