I have a zoom H4 already but mounting of the zoom recorder on 5D MKIII is not so good. Using Tascam DR-60D you can mount this right at bottom of your camera or with a camera plate. Moreover, it is 4 channel recording and adjustment of audio level on board/not like Zoom H6. It also has some remarkable function as follow:Pros1. record 4 channels into 2 seperate files2. 40Hz, 80Hz or 120Hz low cut (better perfermance in compare to zoom H4)3. audio delay setting, if needed.4. monitor seperate channel5. audio gain on output to camera or line output6. use USB chager7. slate function for sync.8. can use for multicam outputCons1. no microphone or speaker built in2. 3-4 input not use XLR3. size as big as camera4. comsume battery faster in compare with Zoom H4Finally, it is a good looking professional device and by mounting it with your DSLR it made it look more professional. I have 14 years of experience in audio production. I got the DR-60D to compliment one of my DSLR cams for better audio capture. I have long been a TASCAM fan and figured that this model was going to be a great little gadget for the price.

As soon as I got this product, I put it through a pretty extensive test. First, I used a pair of Neumann TLM 103 mics and recorded some speech, some music played on a classical guitar, and some silence of course. Right away I discovered two huge problems:

1. About every second or so, there were very quiet but notable artifacts inserted into the recordings. The sound resembled creaking of a leather chair. It was very consistent and always the same. Through the headphones, these artifacts would only be audible live once the recording has started, and then of course on the captured audio as well. I find this absolutely unacceptable for any kind of professional or even semi-professional work. Of course, it could be just my copy of the product, but that's TASCAM's problem, not their customers'.

2. I compared the recorded material captured by the DR-60D to an earlier recording I had made with exactly the same mic setup, but using M-Audio's Profire 2626 audio interface. The difference was stunning. Tascam's recording lacked quite substantially in the lower range (and no the low-cut was not on), and the overall quality was very noticeably worse. This made me conclude that the DR-60D's preamps are significantly sub-par even to some of Tascam's very own other products in the same price range. For example, I used to use Tascam's US-122 USB interface to capture field audio using a laptop. I don't know about the current improved US-122MKII version, but the original US-122 had preamps that are far superior to those of the DR-60D, and for less than half the price. I'm a long time fan of TASCAM (or was until now), and frankly I'm puzzled by the low performance of the DR-60D's preamps. It almost makes me think they were engineered by interns as a side project - the sound quality is on such an amateur level that you'd think this was bought in a toy section at Target.

But wait, after this initial test I proceeded to make some recordings using a lavaliere mic, just because I knew I'd be using it a lot for capturing speech while filming interviews with DSLRs. I used an Audio-Technica AT831 mic for this test. Well… I don't know what TASCAM's problem is, but the difference in quality was now four times worse compared to my previous test. Don't get me wrong, AT831 is not the fanciest lavaliere out there, but I've gotten some pretty decent audio with this mic using other pieces of equipment. Coupled with the DR-60D though, the resulting audio recording is unusable. The most noticeable defect is that even with the recording volume knob turned all the way up, and the gain level set to high in the menus (and the VU meters going crazy - more about that later), the levels on the recorded material are still far too low. Plus, the sound quality was now so bad that even my iPhone's mic sounds better in comparison!

Now, concerning the noise floor: when I was monitoring my test recording through the headphones, the noise was pretty thick. When the gain level is selected to medium or high in the menu, it is not only visible on the VU meter, but it's so high that it's scary. But, to my big surprise, when I listened to and analyzed the recording on the computer, the noise was substantially less pronounced, although there was still some high-pitched hiss that was there. The hiss level was pretty low though (more present in Ch-1 than Ch-2 though), and if it weren't for the unit's other problems, I would have probably kept it.

I did not test channels 3/4.

Other less substantial, but still very annoying problems:

1. The VU meter is ridiculously inaccurate. As mentioned earlier, it seems to be showing the noise that you hear live in the headphones, but that's not there in the recording. It is also deceiving and takes some getting used to in order to set the recording volume to the optimum level.

2. Every time the phantom power is switched on for each channel, there is an "Are you sure?" message that appears on the screen that has to be dismissed, thus requiring extra action from the engineer and unnecessarily consuming his attention.

I assume the above two annoyances could be resolved with a firmware update down the road, and so they aren't as critical.

Concerning other users' comments I've seen regarding the unit's lack of built-in microphones. I actually consider that to be a plus, because in my experience built-in mics in all these portable recorders are always a disappointment. Keep in mind that the mics are always going to be cheap in a unit of this price range, and they will always pick up the noise produced by the unit's circuitry and operation. This is not the same about the preamps though, because as I mentioned earlier, I've owned products for less $$ than this one and that produced far better results.

Needless to say, I'm returning the TASCAM DR-60D back to B&H first thing Monday morning. It's too bad, because like I said, until now I was a TASCAM fan. I actually do like the design and the feel of this product, but the bottom line is - the preamps are trash. Coupled with the artifacts that show up on the recording, this product is absolutely unusable for any kind of serious work. If you're an existing user and like this product - that's great, but I would strongly urge you to make some comparison recordings using other gear. You might just be as stunned as I was!

Intuitive controls. Great feature set. Professional sound. The only drawback is battery life. But that was easily overcome using a USB power pack.

Take your time to learn the ins and outs before you go running out into the field. It took me a day or two to learn where everything is, but it works pretty great. There is a hiss when you crank up the headphones, but it doesn't come through on the recording. If you're looking for a work-around for your terrible DSLR audio, then I recommend this.

I purchased this to use with my GH4 as an XLR adapter with a preamp but ended up with much more than that. The "safety" features that allow recording at two different levels are a great feature for when you're not in controlled environments. Great unit that can serve as a decent field recorder too.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

Let me start by saying I don't normally leave reviews like this, but my experience with Tascam has been so poor, I had to write this. I must take my blame in this as I bought a third Tascam product, after being burned by two others. We've owned the the DR-05, DR-40, and now DR-60D. And 3 of out 3 products have had problems. The DR-05 just stopped working after a little less than a year of use. No physical damage, it just stopped powering on one day. We own numerous other recorders of different brands, most of them being the popular alternative to Tascam, and all of them still work but not the Tascam DR-05. The DR-40 we have has the problem with the constant clicking or static sound that does get recorded whenever you are in record mode, and the only workaround is to press the menu button once you've started recording, but then you can no longer see your levels because the menu is on the screen. Of course this workaround was found online, and not told to us by customer support. For the record, it does still operate now, despite the inconvenience. Now to the DR-60D. The sound quality of the product is great. Having adjustable knobs for volume input, fantastic. The battery life leaves something to be desired but there are accessories to alleviate that problem. The problem is a flaw in design. We've had XLRs get permanently stuck in the device on two separate occasions. We had to cut the XLRs and send the device in for repair. The first time, we sent it to Tascam and took a little over a month to get it back, but at least it was covered under warranty. The very first shoot after getting it back from repair, on the XLR port they had just replaced, a completely different brand XLR cable once again got permanently stuck in the recorder. We sent it back to Tascam again, and this time they had it for a little over 3 months. Getting in contact with their customer support is dreadful, as we called and emailed numerous times to get updates on when we'd receive the product back. They finally tell us they get the part they needed in, charge $ to repair, and told us it's our fault for using cheap XLR cables. The two different XLR cables where very reputable brands. Never again Tascam.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

I use the D60 with a Rhode VideoMic PRO as my sound system. I also use the D60 to record my Caso PX-5S PRO Stage Piano on longer mixes or as a mixer with my DAW and 5s. The sound quality of this setup over the built-in camera mic's is very good. Good enough for "reality show" and commercial videos. The size is very small for it's mixing ability, and once you spend a few minutes with it and get the setting right for your cameras/Mic's/other equipment the sound is very clean.

This is the older model, but I bought it when B&H had the PluralEyes Bundle still in December. I am a one man operator and don't change my audio when I'm recording, so the possible noise from the pots didn't bother me much, and several reviewers said that the D60 meant that the D60II probably would only be an upgrade if the possible noise when changing volume when there was quiet portions between words or similar things. So since I use multiple cameras the PluralEyes was a big deal for me (be aware since there are still some D60 kits listed with this offer that you get a license for an older version, I had to call Red Giant to get the proper link as 3.5 won't work with your serial number).

I find that the D60 and Rhode (I use the 3/4 channels with it) need to have the gain set to high to get good sound with the pot at high for the normal Rhode setting, but with the 20+ DB gain on the Rhode the pot was between 40 and 50 percent. I am getting a lavalier microphone for voice work and would be competent in recording channels 1-4 with both mics.

I do have lots of batteries that I carry, but since I don't use powered mic's I get 5-6 hours out of a set of AA's which I think is ok.

For my specific uses I cannot find a "deal breaker" on the D60. I this one broke/died I replace it with the D60II since I now have PluralEyes. It's not metal so don't drop it.

Comments about Tascam DR-60D 4-Channel Linear PCM Recorder:

I brought it full price a few years back but the price has now dropped to something reasonable. I do some location sound work, not enough to justify a serious Sound Devices recorder, but then the corporate clients that I have don't need that quality as well. For a low budget option it's great.

My biggest issue was that it eats batteries which was costing me a fortune. I've now solved this by purchasing a 10400mAh USB power bank. Best thing I every did and recommend you do if you buy this unit. I got a relatively cheap power bank and it runs the Tascam all day, no worries.

I would possibly look at the new 6 channel zoom, depends on what you do, how many tracks you need.

Overall though it sounds good enough for corporate work, one person shooter stuff paired with a DSLR.

There are so many features on this recorder and it's very reasonably priced. I wasn't really sure how to use it but there are a lot of good videos on Youtube put out by others who are using it and by B&H. Very glad I got this recorder. Its a lot easier to use than I originally thought.

Unit mounts to tripod and is simple to operate. Easy to view controls while filming. No need for second person to monitor levels.

First off the one complaint I have: the tripod mount on the bottom is deep in the body and was hard to get my tripod plate to reach it. Otherwise the audio is great and well worth the upgrade coming from a Tascam Dr05. I use it with the rode NTG-1 and it works great. I love that I can mount everything on camera if I am shooting run and gun, it makes everything easier

Records well on site. Easy to configure and mount. The only issue is when using phantom power, the batteries burn out quickly (as expected) without the ability to add any battery pack.
