I had another "off" brand, non Nikon, and it was alright but nothing like the Vello. The control dials on the Vello feel very smooth and of high quality, as good as on the camera body. The shutter button, too, much more like the camera body. The fit is excellent. I detect no movement or rocking. Everything works as it should in all functions, shooting, playback, etc. The secondary battery holder that holds 6 AA's also works just fine. I like this one so much better that I am getting one for my D750 too. I'd suggest spending a bit more for this than trying to go to a fringe brand on Am----..... B&H doesn't sell low quality stuff and it is why they only sell the Nikon and Vello battery grip. Save yourself the headache and get either the Vello or the Nikon and get it from B&H.

I picked up one of these in December 2013. By June 2014 it was pretty much worn out and it will never again go back on my camera. I normally kept it mounted to my D7100, except when it was time for a battery change. Initially I loved this grip because it seemed to work well and with the extra battery you can often shoot for days without needed to change batteries and rotating to shoot in portrait mode is comfortable and steady. I probably use a tripod about 25% of the time and this may be part of the reason my unit became unreliable. I believe that the weight of the camera and lens on the tripod eventually stressed the mostly plastic base to the point where the control connector got fatigued and began to fail.

What actually went wrong is that the connector to the camera body started becoming intermittent. Sometimes the second battery would be show up and sometimes it wouldn't. Similarly, the auxiliary controls would work sometimes fail. If I removed and reattached the grip it sometimes would work for a while and other times it would not. Sometimes if I pushed the based firmly to the camera body it would work. And, as another reviewer indicated, the connection inheritance would cause the camera to activate when being handled and drain the batteries more quickly. Eventually it became so temperamental that I just gave up.

The bottom line is that this Vello grip is flimsy and quickly wore out. If you want one of these for light duty use it may be suitable but if you are serious about getting a quality product or frequently use a tripod then consider buying the Nikon unit at 3x the price. I'm going to make the investment now like I should have in the first place. I guess I will consider my purchase of the Vello grip a six month rental.

Follow the included Instructions

Comments about Vello BG-N11 Battery Grip for Nikon D7100 & D7200:

Works great if you follow the included instructions. It mentions that anytime you remove the grip to make sure no source of power is running to it. I recommend only using a battery in the grip, not the camera and grip. That way if you have to remove the grip no current is running to it. Reason is the grip makes a connection to your camera's access port on the bottom. In this port are copper connections to mate up to the camera and screwing the grip to the camera with power can cause one of these connections to get misaligned. This misalignment could cause a short in the battery grip and fry the circuitry. To keep it simple; make sure there is no power running to the camera and grip before separating the two.

This is the third grip I have purchased during the past ten years and am very satisfied with the dollar value. It makes my camera a "complete" unit with extra battery life.

Comments about Vello BG-N11 Battery Grip for Nikon D7100 & D7200:

I am returning my second one, because neither one worked properly on my D7200.  On the first one, the shutter and aperture dials only worked if I put excessive pressure on the grip to make the contacts tight. On the second one, the shutter and aperture dials worked. However, the first time I attached it to my camera, I noticed that as I would increase the shutter speed by rotating the dial the shutter speed would actually occasionally decrease. So once again, I am returning the grip. On both grips, the shutter release and the back button auto focus seemed to work fine. Also, it is a rather large grip. I knew that when I bought it based upon some reviews I had read, but it was actually a bit awkward even with bigger hands. I was really hoping this grip would work. I had a 3rd party grip for my D300, and it worked flawlessly. I guess Nikon will be getting more of my money.

Comments about Vello BG-N11 Battery Grip for Nikon D7100 & D7200:

The fit is solid. Very comfortable in my large hands. If using AA batteries in the grip it makes the camera a little heavy and not as balanced. But with a Nikon battery the extra weight is barely noticeable, and a much better balanced feel.

Comments about Vello BG-N11 Battery Grip for Nikon D7100 & D7200:

I was going to buy the Nikon grip for my D7100...but I figured I would try this first. It feels solid, and the connection is tight on my camera body. I have rather large hands, which is the main reason I bought it. My camera feels much more secure now with the grip, and fits in my hand perfectly.

Battery doesn't show a value in battery "meter" in menu. When I shoot, shots come off the battery mounted in the camera. Very poor.

Unfortunately I only have a crop sensor camera right now but I really needed the underbody. For the price it works great. I've had no issues with it at all and with high pace events it has kept up.

Worked great for a year. Now it fails.

Comments about Vello BG-N11 Battery Grip for Nikon D7100 & D7200:

I purchased this grip last September at the NYC super store. It worked great on my D7200 for a year, with the single battery in it and nothing in the body.

Starting about 3 months ago, it started failing occasionally, showing a blinking battery sign on the upper LCD, and I have to turn the camera off, open and close the drawer, and turn it back on. Obviously, this cost me a few precious memories.

So I decided to try to use my battery inside the camera only and use the grip for stability and portraits only, but realized that the grip does not work without a battery in it. So I tried to put in the 6 AA drawer in it, and it doesn't work either. I tried the 6 AA drawer without a body battery and it won't start the camera at all (no matter which AA I put in, all new of course). Just a blinking battery sign on the upper LCD.

Anyway, it was great for a year, now I am very unsatisfied and looking for answers from Vello. Hope they can help, it's just over the 1 year so they don't really have to help...

The battery grip is perfect for my D7200, why spend money on a Nikon when this is less than half with all the features. Shipping to Australia was quick and no hassle. B&H... you are the best! Very Happy!

I go to Camp Old Glory in the Everglades a few times a year and take thousands of pictures. Now I can do that without having to worry about battery power. I take my Airboat and find the birds so now I can shoot from the hip, lol

Hard to beat for the price

Comments about Vello BG-N11 Battery Grip for Nikon D7100 & D7200:

So all in all, well built and worth the price. Overall good fit and finish and the grip does what it is supposed to - that is provide a vertical release and extend shooting time with extra batteries. It came packaged with everything that it was supposed to have. I also own the Nikon version of this grip and can make side by side comparisons. Overall, the Nikon is built and finished better than the Vello. This grip goes on my backup camera body so it won't see a lot of use and I think for the price, it suits it's purpose just fine.
