I have been using this product for about two weeks now and am overall very pleased with it. Build quality is very good, as is expected from G-Tech. Connections are solid, the eject buttons feel nice, and the mechanism to insert and remove the drives is nice and smooth. The addition of a power button on the back of the unit in a nice touch for when you want to power-down but don't feel like unplugging from your computer. The built-in fan is almost silent at idle and is very quiet when it does ramp up to cool hard drives that are under heavy load. The only time I've noticed the fan speed up is when I was transferring about 200Gb of data in one lump sum. The hard drives themselves do run a little bit hotter than other comparable external drives, but the aluminum case seems to dissipate the heat well.

As for the performance of the unit: hard drives connected over USB 3.0 to a 2013 MBPr clock in at approximately 115MB/s Read and 105MB/s write. Plenty fast enough to play 1080p ProRes 4444 files from an Alexa uninterrupted. When the drives are in the dock, there is no appreciable difference in transfer speeds, though the ability to have two drives connected over one thunderbolt port and not have them taking up my USB ports is fantastic. The second thunderbolt port on the unit is also a nice addition for cascading monitors/drives/etc.

The software that comes with the drives is pretty nice as it will give you a positive confirmation that drives have been mounted and ejected. I don't plan on using these drives in a RAID configuration so I can't speak as to the functionality of the software in that regard. In a JBOD configuration the software is not entirely necessary and the drives can be used without it.

My only gripe and the reason for the 4-star rating is two-fold: the transfer speeds do not increase when the drives are docked via thunderbolt (to be fair, they are already operating about as fast as a 7200RPM SATA drive can) and that larger hard drives are so ludicrously expensive. 1TB does the trick fine for most jobs but a reasonably priced 2TB drive option would certainly make this a 5-star product.

I certainly don't recommend this product for everyone, however for anyone looking for a storage solution that still affords them the ability to take their data on the road, this works nicely.

The concept behind this setup is quite impressive but the system as a whole lacks as a real backup or raid unit. The bad: If you use this setup as a raid 0 or 1 , which 0 is for striped speed and 1 is for redundancy or mirroring the drive, it's all you'll be able to use it for. To change drives you have to be very careful when they are in a raid set up. you must eject both drives from your desktop while the system is on. Turn off the unit and then remove the drives. Place new drives in the unit as stand alone pass trough drives or another raid set up. TOO MUCH WORK... The good: If you have it set up as a pass through stand alone drive you can eject the drive and plug it in to a USB 3 port in another computer or offsite. Still these drives are only 1 terabyte drives so your going to need a few of them. As a back up system it's just too expensive. I received mine on sale which included an extra 2 TB drives. The unit comes with 2 TB drives. B&H had a sale and so did G-Tech which included 2 free drives $400 value. As enticing as it sounds I returned the unit after using it 2 days. I was not impressed at all. I love G-Tech company but this system lacked spaced and even though it was Thunderblot , it lacked the speed as well. All the drives were a little glitchy in the USB 3 conncetion. You had to play with the cable a bit for the computer to find the drive. On top of that 1 of the drives was bad. I do admit that I was getting about 120mb's speed on the drives using black magic speed test.I did further research and found a much better solution but at a price. I returned the unit back to B&H and bought the Pegasus2 R4 by Promise Technologies. This unit has thunderbolt 2 connection. one word - AMAZING! so far. it's has 4 - 2 TB's drives for a total of 8TB's . I was able to raid 0 two drives for speed and the other 2 drives I left them as independent pass through drives. The raid shows up on my desktop as one drive and the other 2 as single drives. those single drives are hot swappable which is perfect my lightroom workflow and back up system.I also purchased the Lacie thunderbolt/USB3 Rugged 256GB SSD bus powered. This drive screams speed. I use this as the work drive for my catalog and files i'm working on at the moment in lightroom. Once I ingest the work I back up the whole file into one of the drives in the pegasus2 system. after several hours of work on the job I back it up again. Great system but it's a bit expensive. All together close to $2000 including tax. My apologies If I sound hard on the product but I expect more from G-Tech, they were my favorite storage company.Hope this helps.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-DOCK ev Portable USB 3.0 HDD:

TL;DR—Bridge the gap between desktop and portable drives, take your projects on the go or stay at home. Pricey, but quality and construction is worthwhile!

I've been using G-Raid and G-Drives for years, for performance and construction, backup, projects, etc. But these drives fix the issue of having to transport these tank-like drives from point a to point b. Testing out the EV system with the 1TB EV-ATC, it makes a power-team in combo with the doc. The HTC drives are plastic and lighter, but if you need files from home, switch out the drives and you're on the go again! Build quality and twin thunderbolt ports are great; G-Drive utility for mac allows LED confirmation that your drivers are ejected. My only gripe is that these drives sometimes take ages to eject when used on their own, but this has happened only twice over the past two weeks and these drives have been used multiple times a day since.

The price could be considered pretty tough, but as functional system these drives do their job so well. If your work has you travelling frequently, then pick up an ATC drive or standalone case and don't even let the idea of packing a seemingly solid brick of aluminum in your suitcase already bursting with equipment—and when you get home, just slit right in and keep working!

We used this in our design team as part of the 15" MacBook Pro and 27" Apple Display. One drive is used for Time Machine to back up while we work, and another drive is used for project files, which can be ejected for off site editing, meeting, etc. It is a very convenient and versatile system because of the mobility and ability to swap and use multiple drives as needed.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-DOCK ev Portable USB 3.0 HDD:

This product works as stated but also doesn't. The product is praised by its creators for providing a simple and portable system to help with workflow. The drives work well and everything is read and written to beautifully. However, RAID doesn't work well and I find it missing drives or degrading the RAID often. I stopped using RAID on it all together. The drive comes with (per tech support) OPTIONAL LED Drivers for the indicator lights. No where in Youtube videos or their website is the product promoted with OPTIONAL Led lights. It is a part of the product and the lights do not work well. I find some times I put a drive in and it states it is either ready to eject (when its clearly not) or RED for no reason. The RAID problem is related to using Apple's Disk Utility so we can't over fault G-Tech there, but the LED drivers need some work. I would give it a 4 if the LED drivers worked well.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-DOCK ev Portable USB 3.0 HDD:

Hello all! I recently purchased this taking advantage of the special sale they had were you could get a G-Dock ev and you would get two G-Drive ev for free! I am an Apple user and I work with both stills and video. I've never actually owned anything from G-Technology personally, but had co-workers and G-tech drives in workplaces before. I Liked this product for it's portability. I use a 15in MBP retina and really wanted to start using thunderbolt speeds, and you know that with video USB does not cut it. For whenever I decide to leave the office and do some basic editing or small work at a coffee shop or somewhere else, on the go, This drives being 7200 RPM are really fast enough to do the job and help me be more efficient. Which is what I always look for in a product. The quality is great! solid stuff and very very very well made. When you buy a product like this, sure, you are paying more than a WD drive or some other brand. BUT you pay for efficiency and a GOOD product you can rely on. This has been my experience. Actually, I've only had a Raid drive fail me once on a Mac tower, in 10 years of working in production.

            The way that I am using these now is this way;

Drive 1 - Lightroom and photo related jobs
Drive 2 - Video and Final Cut jobs
Drive 3 - One of my main clients jobs (they keep me pretty busy so they deserve their own drive)
Drive 4 - Backup or temp storage

Speed is incredible! I moved 200gb in 40 min. that is insane! I am gonna start testing it more throughly as I go and do more jobs using this product, but so far I've been very impressed.

PS People complain the drives are too small in storage size, I honestly work with project that end up being at the most 500-700 GB so this is to me perfect since I can consolidate everything in to a drive.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-DOCK ev Portable USB 3.0 HDD:

I use the portable drives for location backup. Then work on the files from the drive using my workstation. With this workflow, I needed a backup that was other than TimeMachine. The difficult part of the setup was the RAID. The drives would not mount. The instructions that were provided are elementary and lack the documentation needed for setting up various RAIDs

Great for work in the field and at home. Brilliant concept. Take a drive with you in the field plug it into your dock when you get home. Save projects in removable drives. The only way to go in my opinion.

I'm not going to get technical here - you can read all the specs somewhere else. This set up offers me great flexibility and reliability. The 1TB portable drives make it easy for me to work away from my office AND I get the speed I expect once I'm back at my desk.

My older G-Technology hard drives have NEVER failed.

Fast - Reliable - Flexibility. A great combination.

So far (only a week or two in) I have had no problems with the G-Dock. Time will tell but I'm happy with the build quality and speed I can get from it. A little pricey but I hope over time the G-Drive EV's will come down making this a more cost effective solution.

My Wife and I are both photographers who work together. The G-Dock allows us to do that and keep a redundant system. When I'm on the road, I download all of my photos to my ejectable USB drive. When I get back I synch both drive to keep redundancy.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-DOCK ev Portable USB 3.0 HDD:

As a pro photographer, I was looking for a way that my wife and I can work on different workstations and a way to maintain redundancy in case one of our hard drives failed. The G-Dock ev (along with an app names GoodSync) solved all our problems. She can take her USB HD on the road and I can take mine to work. Once we meet up again the 2 hard drives sync providing up the redundancy we need in case of a hard drive failure. Plus it lets us see each others work. The Thunderbolt capability is also inspiring. When going through my pictures in Lightroom I can zoom through and flag or rate my pictures without the lag of USB. There is virtually no lag using the Thunderbolt connection.
