I've used the VidiU to stream a couple live sporting events. It's great for a compact, single-camera setup. I streamed 720p with great results (1080p was going to be too much for the bandwidth I was allocated). Definitely go with the iOS app for setup as it's incredibly tedious to get set up on the device itself. The app makes setup a lot easier plus it includes a nice monitor with minimal delay along with easy access to the encoder and platform settings. My biggest complaint is that this device doesn't include a shoe extension - if you want to mount anything else on your camera, you'll need a shoe extension or v-bracket.

Unfortunately, the unit I received was defective and I had to ship it back to Teradek for repairs. Once I got it back it works flawlessly. Be aware that only certain USB 3G/4G modems work and Teradek does not have a list online of which work and which don't. My AT&T Beam does NOT work so that's still a headache for me since I would have to pay a restocking fee if I returned it to AT&T. On WiFi and Ethernet the units works like its supposed to. I've only used it with Ustream so I can't speak for other platforms. Quality of streams is excellent although expect :30 to 2:00 delays in the stream depending on the quality of the stream and your Internet connection. Overall it's a great device if you get one that works. Unfortunately I've heard from several people who got defective units and had to ship them back to be fixed. Great news is Teradek customer service is excellent and get an A+ grade.

Comments about Teradek VidiU:

The Teradek VidiU worked like a charm. What's more, BH came through at the last minute like a champ. Received the request to stream content live to FB on a Thursday afternoon for an event scheduled in a day and a half. Placed the order as soon as I got back to my office and selected overnight delivery. The VidiU arrived as promised by 10:30am the next morning. It took a few hours to configure and test the device for the live event. On the day of the event, the VidiU did exactly what it was supposed to do - deliver an 720p signal to FB Live.

Thank You B&H for your fantastic Customer Service and on-hand stock. I couldn't have successfully completed the mission without your help.

It used to work

Comments about Teradek VidiU:

Connecting this via WiFi forget it. The thumbnail image on the display from the camera is fine. Click on it to see the real display and you get distorted video no matter what camera it's connected to so that part is useless. Getting it to link to UStream is a non starter as the LI and PW does not work to said service. Hard wired, it works but not wifi. Question, how often does one connect to the net via ethernet, especially on a video shoot where the camera is REALLY far away from the router that's located in the basement of the place where you are going to shoot. Not good. End of rant.

From great excitement and anticipation to disappointment !

Comments about Teradek VidiU:

I would have given 1* but giving the benefit of the doubt until i receive replacement unit.

First, the unit came out of the box with a chip in the plastic on the front panel. I almost returned without trying but thought it wasn't bad enough to have to wait another week for a new unit.

I spent many weeks researching and watching countless videos on the VIDIU to the point I thought I could set it up in less than 5 minutes. Instead, I spent 5 days getting more and more frustrated until I gave up and called teradek directly. After almost 2 hours on the phone with Teredek remoting into my computer, we still could not "go live". I went from extremely excited that this was going to fill a great need for me to now disappointed, discouraged and wondering if this product is worth the investment. Even if the replacement unit works I will always be nervous that it will just quit working when I need it.

I've bought thousands of dollars of equipment from B&H and have been extremely satisfied with all those purchases.

I will provide an updated review once I receive the replacement device.

Do not buy for wifi use

Comments about Teradek VidiU:

I have attempted to use the original vidiu with Meraki and Aruba AP's. It can take up to 5 minutes to connect to an 802.11n or ac AP while producing error messages about not connecting. Eventually it will if left alone.. We had hoped to use the vidiu with volunteer cameramen to stream meetings about town, but without technical expertise, this product is not usable.

excellent encoder in a small device

Comments about Teradek VidiU:

I bought this product after reading reviews and watching youtube reviews. Bhphoto was great on offering cheap and fast shipment and it arrives in my country in less thn 5 days. Received the unit with a small crack on the glass but the unit was working fine. I dare not return as it will cost me extra on shipping.

Performance wise using ethernet was great. The application on Ios is excellent, on android you have to use the web version. I tried using android vidiu apk that I found in the net but it keep crashing. Use the Ios or the web version which is more stable. Modem support is great, I used Huawei e8276s which is not on the list but it is working fine. I use youtube live , you can schedule instant live event or schedule time and it allows automatic recording based on time. Nothing more that I need for live streaming in a small device. Hope bhpphoto double check their shipment for international order so it will not ship items which has defects. In all its a great product for live streaming.. would have given 5 if not due to small crack

          Comments about Teradek VidiU:

Was expecting SSID selection to be similar to a PC or Smartphone in that it would select the best signal quality from the saved ssid list. Thus when going from building to building, the proper ssid for the building would automatically be selected. This is not how it works. The operator must manually select the ssid from the saved list and then expect several false "cannot connect" messages before the Vidiu finally does connect.

Once connected, the vidiu works great so long as the wifi is good.

          Comments about Teradek VidiU:

Overall a great little broadcaster. Cant comment on Wifi connectivity, or battery life as Im using a wired ethernet connection & the included AC adapter. Using app on a tablet for broadcast control (Android). This setup works flawlessly. Boot up does take a couple minutes, but isnt an inconvenience if broadcast is planned. Super easy install (Basically plug & play) and configuration, as long as you use the app. Display is easy to read. Navigation is intuitive, however if you were stuck using just the little directional button, you would probably find inputting info a bit finicky and time consuming.

            Comments about Teradek VidiU:

I purchased the VidiU but decided to return it because of its limited capability. We purchased it to use with the "free" iPad Live:Air app. Also purchased it to use with Wirecast. The free app requires a $ upgrade to remove the watermark and enable needed features. Requires another $ to enable recording.First of all, VidiU works brilliantly as advertised in accepting HDMI input from any camcorder or DSLR. This allows you to stream SD TO HD video signal direct to an iPad running Live:Air. We use an iPad Pro and it looks and works impressively! The VidiU will allow you to stream direct to a CDN such as Ustream, Livestream, or any RTMP based provider.A MAJOR limitation is that the VidiU only has a one hour battery life. This makes it unusable for a mobile streaming rig for filming/streaming live events or anything last more than one hour. Of course, AC power can be used but that defeats the purpose of being mobile and wireless in the field. I suppose that you can connect an accessory battery to the device but that's another expense. They could have easily made a unit with 2-4 hours of battery life.Another major limitation is that this device does not work with Wirecast using the StreamReader plug-in. I was told by Tech Support that this model of Vidiu is incompatible with the Streamreader plug-in. Using the plug-in requires Wirecast pro ($ upgrade to regular wirecast). Also requires using the VidiU Pro device which costs $.Teradek is a high-end professional products company. Sales and service support are excellent. I was informed that both the VidiU Mini and VidiU are consumer-grade products. I'm thinking that for producers such as myself who do excellent work for some clients on limited budgets that these products are ultimately frustrating because of designed limitations. It is best to spend more money (if you have it) and go with professional-grade products produced by Teradek.

            Comments about Teradek VidiU:

First I bought the Livestream Broadcaster Pro but realized that I cannot use it for YouTube Live. I thought I read somewhere that it can be used for YouTube but when I called Livestream support the guy's unenthusiastic and curt reply was that I can't use it for YouTube. May be I misread. So I returned it and bought VidiU. I had to google to figure out how to access its web interface. Once there it was a breeze to setup. My first streaming of a four-hour live event went unbelievably smooth, without a hitch! Overjoyed!
Curious fact: When I opened the VidiU packaging it looked eerily similar to the Livestream Broadcaster Pro I just returned! Same size, shape and design packaging. Are they both made at the same factory? Not that it matters - it does what I want it to do.

This little box worked like a champ for a sporting event - connected to Livestream every time it was needed during 6 wet, torturous days. Very happy with its performance.
Fed it signal straight out of a switcher, as well as from output of Wirecast software.
A little more expensive than some other options, but more flexible, too!

                    Compare to Cerevo LiveShell Pro

                    from NYC

                    Comments about Teradek VidiU:

I've been using the Cerevo LiveShell Pro when I decided to purchase the Teradek Vidiu for an additional broadcasting location. Teradek is definitely a more solid brand as is made in the USA compared to Cerevo which is Japanese, this is easily noticeable in the quality and feel of the device. The Vudiu has some cool features over the LiveShell Pro such as automatic speedtest and recommended settings accordingly. Also it integrated with all CDN's including the new LiveStream which the LiveShell, and most other devices I've seen do not support, that's a big plus. Additionally the Wifi is a lot stronger and more reliable than the LiveShell Pro. On the other hand there are some important features that are missing. Unlike the Cerevo LiveShell and other Teradek devices, there is no web-based dashboard. The device can only be controlled remotely while in the same WiFi network, this is a major downside for many people when compared to the LiveShell or the Teradek Cube for example. Also the controls in the Cerevo Dashboard are alot more powerful than Vudiu's controls which is lacking subtitles, lighting, and other sound and video controls. Battery life is a big con with the Vudiu, only lasts 1 1/2 hrs, is dc not usb so cannot use those inexpensive external batteries, the only other choice is a bulkier $ external battery that Teradek itself sells. Also the price is a bit heftier than the LiveShell pro. So depending on your needs this may be what you need. Or maybe wait for the next version.
