Yes, the focus can be slow in dim light. Yes, for an XE camera the lens is somewhat large.

But let's get real for a minute. It weighs and is about as big as a Canon 24-105 L, cost 40% less than the 24-105 and is optically better. No one calls the Canon 24-105 a big lens, do they? It's also faster than Canon's cheapo 75-300mm too.

Like all systems and lenses, there are some compromises made. Fuji kept the price extremely reasonable and the quality, especially for the money, extremely high.

Remember, the lens is equivalent to an 84-305mm lens. Hello, it's small for a 305mm lens!! Maybe we've been spoiled by the 18-55mm.

If the whole XE series and this lens focused a bit faster and price was the same, it would be exceptional. As it is it is merely wonderful. And should firmware upgrades make it focus better, then it's a 5 star for sure.

See attached images. Compare that to any lens at the equivalent of 300mm (or even 200mm) which costs 3x as much and is 2x-3x as large.

Beat out the 18-135 Fuji lens I gave up for this one!

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I gave up my Fujifilm 18-135 lens for this one. I was hoping it would at least match the quality of the 18-135. I needed just that little extra zoom length etc... I was extremely surprised and pleased that this lens out shown the 18-135 a bit. Both are good lenses. But this one is more detailed (unquestionable). It's also a bit better on the 200mm end of the zoom with the aperture versus the 18-135. Colors are great. I've shot some very low light stuff involving night time shows (I shoot a lot for The Walt Disney Company) and those shots turned out surprisingly good. Yes, would have been better on a tripod or with a slightly lower f-stop. But no complaints on my end nor Disney's end on the (handheld) night shots I submitted. Excellent lens all the way around!!!!

Great Lens

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

This is a great lens at this price point. You get great image quality and detail while capturing steller color rendering this lens also collects a good amount of light being an f/3.5-4.8 with metal lens mount you can't go wrong with this lens. There are only two other lenses that cover this zoom range one being the pricey 50-140mm f2.8 and the other being the 55-230mm f/4.5-6.3 which has a cheaper build quality. Would give this lens 5 stars but lens tends to focus a little slow or miss focus a couple times since I had it but this problem is easily remedied by expanding your focus area.

Great Lens

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Really enjoy this lens. It's very sharp and faster than most other kit lenses in this zoom range. The stabilization works great and helps with hand held shots.

The only couple of things that are slightly less than perfect:
-The aperture ring is a little 'sloppy'. I've often found myself going an extra click because it isn't quite as tight as I'd like it to be
-On the other hand, the zoom ring is very tight. It makes it a little difficult to quickly zoom in and out, but I'm hoping this will improve as I use the lens more and break it in.

Even given these slight issues this lens is still really great. The AF speed works well enough for the kinds of sport photography I'm working with (using with the X-T2) and, as I've said before, the lens is super sharp and pretty quick, especially for the price.

Good zoom, light enough to carry and hand hold easily

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I took this lens of safari and surfing in Africa. It doesn't have quite the range that you might want for either of those activities, so if you're going to be stationary, then you should probably get a traditional DSLR and a longer zoom. We, however, hiked around to surf and on safari and this lens was light enough to comfortably carry either around my neck or with my Peak Designs Capture clipped to my pack.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Bought the Fujifilm XT10 with an 18-55 lens and felt very restricted despite the fact that I do mostly closeup intimate photos. The XF 55-200 allows me to frame the same subject in many different ways. It's fun to use and super sharp. Love it.

THE way to go if you can't swing the 50-140

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

If didn't have the coin for the 50-140 and went for the 55-200. Just because it is a variable aperture lens and a lower price does not mean it is in any way an inferior lens. It is very sharp and the OIS works wonders.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I just got this lens and have not have time to use it much but so far am pleasantly surprised! The focus is faster than I thought it might be and the images are crisp. I used this lens with my Fuji XT10 with the brand new EF-42 Flash I just bought and was happy with the results. I traded in my XT1 and only had my XT10 to shoot with while awaiting the XT2 to become available. I took pics of my granddaughter's Christmas program in a dark auditorium and got some pleasing results. I am looking forward to shooting some action photos to test the lens in a more challenging situation. After shooting with Canon and the much heavier 70-200mm 2.8 lens this was awesome. No, there is no 2.8 aperture throughout the range of the zoom so I am interested to see if it will preform well when put to the action photo test. For the price I am very pleased!

Optically great, mechanically almost there

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I was impressed by the optics and my results. However, I found the zoom ring too stiff to use it in most situations other than when you have time to set up the shot and when speed is not a factor. I only tested one prototype so I cannot be sure if they are all like this. But I have never seen one this tight.

Great Image Quality Slow Auto Focus

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Like the headline says, Image quality is definitely there just wish the auto focus was a touch faster. But for $600-$700 you'd be hard pressed to find another quality lens.

From what I can tell great lens

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Haven't done really serious evaluation of this lens, but just from initial use I really like the operation and image quality so far. Stabilization seems to work well, and nearly silent autofocus is a cool thing (different than most Fuji lenses in this regard). It is a bit large, but I've been using it with an X-T1 and find it pretty comfortable to shoot with. Has the expected Fuji feel of quality, being mostly metal, the large rubber grip and the tension for zooming feel just about perfect. Finding the focus ring (if you want to do manual focus), and aperture ring, take a little getting used to, but not really a major problem.

This is a great lens for the money. Reasonably fast, very sharp. Focus a bit slow especially in low light. I wish it were weather sealed but that would likely greatly increase the price.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I see little with this lens that could be considered a compromise. Focusses fast and very sharp, even fully extended at 200 mm. Firm zoom ring, it will not shift once set. Construction is outstanding. To my surprise, its weight and length do not overwhelm my Fuji XE2.

Affordable Reach

By Tommyboy

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Like many here, I found this lens to be one of the two choices: 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 or 50-140 f/2.8. Due to life circumstances and family responsibilities, I opted for the more affordable 55-200. It's a little less than half the price and is a 300mm equivalent: on paper, more lens for less money. So what's the catch? This lens simply doesn't have the fit and finish of 50-140; it doesn't have as fast an aperture; it doesn't have a fixed, maximum aperture. The zoom extends out of barrel and is a fairly ungainly design. It has a metal barrel, but portions of the lens are plastic. On the plus side, which for this lens is considerable, it is very sharp—tack sharp. It is very small and lightweight. And the lens has an impressive optical image stabilizer. It's a pleasure to shoot with. The AF is not as fast as it on some lenses, but it is fast enough. And although it is not as fast as the 50-140, it is faster than competing lenses of similar range from other manufacturers. Having owned a Canon 75-300, I can say with certainty that this lens is significantly sharper. I planned to return this lens if I didn't like it in favor of its more expensive cousin, but I'm so impressed with its size, weight, and image quality, that I decided to keep it. If you need the convenience of a zoom, if you'd like the reach of a 300mm lens, if most of your shooting is outdoors in the daylight, and if you like scary sharp pictures, then I would recommend this lens without hesitation.

I bought this lens for my gentleman on his birthday as he loves photography. He has always enjoyed photographing local wildlife, like birds, but it is hard to get close before they fly away. This lens has helped him capture already wonderful photographs of a butterfly and a pelican. We are very happy with it.
