Yes, the focus can be slow in dim light. Yes, for an XE camera the lens is somewhat large.

But let's get real for a minute. It weighs and is about as big as a Canon 24-105 L, cost 40% less than the 24-105 and is optically better. No one calls the Canon 24-105 a big lens, do they? It's also faster than Canon's cheapo 75-300mm too.

Like all systems and lenses, there are some compromises made. Fuji kept the price extremely reasonable and the quality, especially for the money, extremely high.

Remember, the lens is equivalent to an 84-305mm lens. Hello, it's small for a 305mm lens!! Maybe we've been spoiled by the 18-55mm.

If the whole XE series and this lens focused a bit faster and price was the same, it would be exceptional. As it is it is merely wonderful. And should firmware upgrades make it focus better, then it's a 5 star for sure.

See attached images. Compare that to any lens at the equivalent of 300mm (or even 200mm) which costs 3x as much and is 2x-3x as large.

A great lens for the money

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

This is a great lens for the money. Reasonably fast, very sharp. Focus a bit slow especially in low light. I wish it were weather sealed but that would likely greatly increase the price.

An excellent lens

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I see little with this lens that could be considered a compromise. Focusses fast and very sharp, even fully extended at 200 mm. Firm zoom ring, it will not shift once set. Construction is outstanding. To my surprise, its weight and length do not overwhelm my Fuji XE2.

Affordable Reach

By Tommyboy

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Like many here, I found this lens to be one of the two choices: 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 or 50-140 f/2.8. Due to life circumstances and family responsibilities, I opted for the more affordable 55-200. It's a little less than half the price and is a 300mm equivalent: on paper, more lens for less money. So what's the catch? This lens simply doesn't have the fit and finish of 50-140; it doesn't have as fast an aperture; it doesn't have a fixed, maximum aperture. The zoom extends out of barrel and is a fairly ungainly design. It has a metal barrel, but portions of the lens are plastic. On the plus side, which for this lens is considerable, it is very sharp—tack sharp. It is very small and lightweight. And the lens has an impressive optical image stabilizer. It's a pleasure to shoot with. The AF is not as fast as it on some lenses, but it is fast enough. And although it is not as fast as the 50-140, it is faster than competing lenses of similar range from other manufacturers. Having owned a Canon 75-300, I can say with certainty that this lens is significantly sharper. I planned to return this lens if I didn't like it in favor of its more expensive cousin, but I'm so impressed with its size, weight, and image quality, that I decided to keep it. If you need the convenience of a zoom, if you'd like the reach of a 300mm lens, if most of your shooting is outdoors in the daylight, and if you like scary sharp pictures, then I would recommend this lens without hesitation.

Great at shots of birds and butterflies

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I bought this lens for my gentleman on his birthday as he loves photography. He has always enjoyed photographing local wildlife, like birds, but it is hard to get close before they fly away. This lens has helped him capture already wonderful photographs of a butterfly and a pelican. We are very happy with it.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

From modest to long reach, this lens is easy to carry, hold and is not nearly as bulky as a full frame lens of the same focal length. That it is a little slow is not a problem outdoors, and wide open the depth of focus is narrow enough to isolate subject from background. It is well made and looks as if it is pro grade.

    Nice Surprise

    By Rstamp

    from Olympic Peninsula

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

New to the mirrorless world. Started with the 10-24 and 35 f/2 on my X Pro 2. Kept my Nikon D300 and the 300 f/4, but knew I would need more reach after selling my 70-200 f/2.8.
After receiving this lens, I am blown away by the IQ of it. I shot primarily landscapes and wildlife. While not always having the reach for most wildlife, it shines with landscapes. For the price, I'm very satisfied with this addition to my Fuji kit.

I purchased a Fuji XT 10 with the 18 - 55 lens to carry on a trip to New York City. I have a variety on Nikon cameras and lenses and wanted a camera that was smaller, lighter and less conspicuous. This camera combination fit into my coat pocket and traveled well. While in NYC I had the opportunity to visit B&H which was quite impressive. I was so impressed with this camera that I purchased the XF 55-200 mm and have been very satisfied. The combination is compact and lightweight, and image quality is good. I would recommend this camera and lens to anyone

This is an incredibly sharp lens considering price. the build quality is good. In general Fuji XF lens are very well constructed with excellent quality. The quality of the lenses is good enough that I would not consider the very heavy Fuji XF 50 to 140 f .2.8 lens. I switched from a Canon DSLR system to reduce the weight of the gear I lug round in the back country.

Great addion to my FUJI Lens collection

          By Scott

          from Bay Area, CA

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

I have been wanting a zoom lens, but didn't think I will use it everyday. Therefore, I didn't want to get the pricier F2.8 Version. FUJI XF 55-200mm is perfect fit to my occasional uses. The lens is sharp and takes clear pictures. The focus time is acceptable. However, it does hunt back and forth when pointing to or the side of bright/reflective objects. I like the reach of 200mm x1.6, which can bring an object much closer than the F2.8 version.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Very nice lens. IQ is really impressive favoring the short end. Not on par with the 50-140mm f2.8 but then again it should not be.
The weight is reasonable (way lighter than the 2.8) and balances well enough with my XT-1. The sticky zoom noted by some posters is not a problem from my perspective. There tends to be a bit of start up inertia, but then the zoom feels solid and lens creep not an issue. Auto-focus is quick and accurate. Still trying to dial in my technique for moving subjects with the Fuji system. Canon has it beat here by a mile.
I carry my kit in a backpack on hikes, camping, boating and tend to do a lot of walking on trips. The weight and space savings compared to my Canon and lenses is immense. Overall very happy and look forward to using it more.

Comments about Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS Lens:

Since switching to Fuji I mainly use the primes. Got this to add a bit of reach and because I couldn't decide between the 56 f/1.2 and the 50-140 f/2.8. The lack of OIS did briefly scare me off the 56 and I just didn't like the shooting experience of the 50-140(FYI, I did finally end up getting the 56 prime and so far I just love it). This lens is a nice all-arounder and IMHO the bargain of the Fuji line. Focusing is good and IQ is great. I find it does hunt a bit in low light so it's main use for me was outdoors in well lit situations. I'm sure at some point it will be up for sale, but for now it's found a home in my bag.
