I honestly don't know why there aren't more glowing reviews for this lens, my only regret is that it can't be used on a full frame body.
I know Tokina makes faster (2.8) ultra wide zooms but they don't have the focal range, either they start at 16 or only go to 22 believe me this 12-28 even on a crop sensor is plenty versatile and plenty sharp, built well and F4 is just fine thank you. I'll take 12-28 F4 over 10-22 or 16-28 2.8's any day of the week and the money saved will go towards the Sigma 20mm 1.4 ART for my full frame. And I'm not saying this because I'm cheap (got 3 L lenses and a couple nice primes) this Tokina is right up there, the most impressive thing is how well it handles shooting right at the sun. Great color, contrast and sharp! Fast focus also and decent bokeh see sample.

Tokina 12-28 ATX Pro

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

Just ok, nothing to brag about, a lot of light fall-off near the edges, really could use a graduated filter - probably 3 stops. Then it becomes a f11 lens, like I said, nothing to brag about.

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

Its a steal at what I snagged it for on DOTD.

A bit slow at F4 but overall I am happy with the purchase. I would like to compare it to canons 10-18mm efs.

Images look great, but the lens randomly looses communication with my Canon 60D.

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

Nice lens, solid, sharp as a tack, easy to use. Image stabilization would be nice but not necessary for my needs. When needed I'll use a tripod. 77mm filter size is the same as my 100-400 L series so very convenient. I use a Tokina 10-17 for my underwater shooting so familiar with the brand. The lens is nicely balanced on my t4i. One handed shooting is comfortable. Used it in the crowd at the Pittsburgh Science March and very happy with the results. Also does great closeups.

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

I've used this lens around the house and now at a wedding. As I don't believe it's fast enough for a weddings I wanted to try it anyways. I'll leave it in my bag for those very tight getting-ready rooms where I can use a speedlight.
Thing to note, it works on full frame camera bodies with NO black corners at 18mm-28mm which makes this useful on my 7d2(19-45mm FOVCF) and my 5d3(18mm-28mm). So I will be using this for landscapes mostly.
It's adequately sharp wide open and gets very sharp at f5.6. This lens is not lightweight, it's definitely heavier than Canon's 17-40 but it does have a gasket at the mount and does not extend when zooming/focusing. So adding a filter on the front probably adds a nice level of weathersealing.
All in all, I've very happy with this lens. I won't use it too often and I didn't have to spend too much on it so I will always have a UWA in my bag when I need it, and I can spend more on what I use more, portrait lens.

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

Used this out of the box shooting at an off-leash dog park with bar service and food. Great indoors in small space and out in park as well. The autofocus worked fine and changing focal length was smooth and easy. Nice to have 4.0 all the way through. Very glad I got it, especially as a B&H deal of the day!

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

The zoom arrived quickly, thanks to B&H as usual. The build is solid and it feels good in the hands. At 12mm, it seems to have soft focus with f/4-f/5.6. I'll probably check to see if it needs some micro adjustments. The AF drive is quick enough but it is definitely noisier compared to the Canon's STM. I'm happy with the test pictures I took. I'm just an amateur and this is my first ultra-wide angle zoom so I intend to have a lot of fun with it. I got it from the B&H's deal zone so it is definitely worth it.

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

I have tested it with Canon 7D Mark II using both AF and Manual focus. Its AF is fast and silent and all images are sharp. I think that IQ is as good as my Canon 17-40mm F4 L.

I also tested it with Sony A6000 with FotoioX Fusion Adapter using both AF and manual focus. The results are the same as Canon 7D Mark II.

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

This is a new purchase for me, so my field use has been somewhat limited. Having said that, I am truly impressed by the overall sharpness and lack of edge distortion with this wide angle lens. I purchased this for my Canon C100 cinema/video camera. I needed a wide angle lens to add to my arsenal as I do architectural and real estate work...this fits the bill perfectly, especially with backlit subjects. The best part...it doesn't break the budget! Thank you B&H.

Got it on a great sale, and it's a great performer

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

I already have the canon 10-18mm, but when i saw this lens on sale for a really really good price, i nabbed one up. Tokina is perhaps known for their low cost, ultra wide range of lenses.

Build quality
A tank as usual, tokina doesn't skimp on construction

Focusing
This is where tokina has remained a bit old school, no ultrasonic, just a regular somewhat clunky sounding gear drive. The good thing about this is true tactile manual focusing with hard stops at the ends. AF is reasonably fast in various lighting conditions.

Distortions & aberrations
Pleasantly minimal and on par with other good performers in this category range. The wide end has a fairly nice curve distortion which is easily correctable. I didn't notice any significant chromatic aberrations.

Sharpness
Wide open looks fairly tacky, with corner and edges looking pretty nice overall. Stopped down by 1 stop things improve nicely.

Missing?
Ultrawide lenses typically get neglected in the stabilization department. Some feel it's unnecessary, but seeing as video is just as common as photos with these lenses, stabilization is great to have. The lack of it may not be a detriment depending on your uses, and more and more cameras as coming out with sensor based stabilization.

Overall
It's still a hard pick over competitors, such as tokina's renowned 11-16/11-20 2.8. The extra reach on the long end does make this lens more versatile as it brings it to a fairly normal focal range, But a stop slower will hurt those with weak iso cameras. Canon's 10-18 is fantastic, but is slower on the long end, but it has IS, and is super small and lightweight, great for handheld/gimbal/stabilizer work.

Choose based on your needs and budget, as always!

Amazing value for APS-C

Comments about Tokina 12-28mm f/4.0 AT-X Pro APS-C Lens for Canon:

I've only taken a few shots with this lens so far but I'm astounded by the shallow depth of field at f/4 with a wide angle lens. The very first shot I took is of a lens focus calibration card and when I viewed the image I thought, "huh...how'd they do that" My former super wide lens was a rather dated Tamron 10-24mm for APS-C. in comparison this lens blows it away albeit with 2mm less worth of an angle of view. At the widest there is chroma visible but it's correctable. To me the shallow depth of field, pleasing out of focus look in the background, and cost all add up to a lens worth having. You should note this lens comes on sale at drastically reduced prices from time to time - I purchased mine new from B&H in the deal zone for less than they sell used ... I recommended this to a friend who's already used it for a shoot to do some creative shots, the model loved it and the lens allowed for some unusual shots that look like they have a professional bokeh. I reviewed the raw files myself and decided this lens has to be in my bag for shoots where I use a crop body and think I might get some opportunity to do something creative.
