I love this lens. I am by no means an amazing photographer. I understand some basics and play in aperture mode and with various settings, but to be honest a lot of my photos are on SCN mode in landscape or automatic. I know, don't tell anyone! I am really using my Sony Nex7 like a point and shoot. There is a clear difference between the Sony lenses and the two Zeiss lenses I have (this one and the 24/1.8). These lenses just give beautiful, crisp views. Really, really beautiful views, angles, colors. I am very happy with this lens.

Wide angle lenses are not the most common focal lengths for shooting pictures. Typically, people buy these types of lenses for specific purposes -- typically for real estate or architectural photography, or for wide angle landscapes. In my case, I was looking for a lens for use in my underwater photography (I have a professional grade scuba housing for my Sony NEX camera). I tested the lens extensively, and really enjoyed the images, but in the end, I decided to return the lens.

I don't use wide angle lenses that much on land, but I do use them extensively underwater -- particularly for underwater video, as well as photos. This lens takes beautiful pictures, but be warned, it focus hunts like crazy!!! Seriously, it will drain your camera's battery. It is pretty much a continual focus hunt. The focus hunting was annoying, but if I primarily wanted this for land photography, I would have kept the lens. However, since I am reliant on the autofocus underwater (where you can't open a scuba housing and use the focus ring), I don't think this lens would have cut it. I think would have been especially problematic for underwater video.

That said, the images are gorgeous -- rich, textured, beautiful color. I practiced what is known as "close focus wide angle" shots since that is what I try to do underwater, and I got some great shots of flowers and food -- even though this is not a macro lens. For landscapes or architectural shots, where you can intervene and focus manually when needed, this is a great lens. For the right purposes, this is a nice tool -- just not for the purposes I need it. On balance, I would give this a tightly qualified positive recommendation.

Great lens, please include a lens pouch!

This lens is really sharp. Really enjoying it with my 6300. My main annoyance is that they don't include a lens pouch with the bag. seems like a silly oversight as it would be very helpful.

PROS:
Zeiss Quality
Distortion control is great and can easily be corrected in post.

Cons:
Autofocus is very noisy. Like almost comically so, but for stills who cares.
Expensive.

Nice optics. Not designed for video applications.

I bought this for my Sony FS5 digital cinema camera. It is sharper and has better local contrast than the Sony 10-18mm f4 zoom and weighs just a bit more.
Unfortunately the autofocus hunts on the Zeiss while the Sony lens is quick and decisive. Not an issue in many situations, but when the camera is on a gimbal it makes a difference. I decided to keep it any way because the image is slightly better. The lens had 02 firmware, which is supposed to make it better. Not really good enough AF, even with the firmware.
Strangely mine came from BH without the plastic bags inside the box. It makes me believe I got someone else's return, even though I ordered a new lens.

I'll echo what others have said in the way of positive feedback for this lens's photo quality, etc.  However, do not buy it if you want to use it for video (assuming you want the audio).  It's autofocus motor is VERY noisy.

I am about to leave for Italy on a 16 day vacation and picture taking trip for photos that will be in a book my wife has been working on for years. I have been looking at lots of photographs, primarily of Italy and noticed that the great majority of the one that really show off the country and were the ones I liked most were done with wide or very wide lenses. The widest lens I had for my Sony a6000 went down to only 16mm and had proven not to be wide enough on several occasions. The Zesss Touit 12mm f/2.8 covers 25% wider field of view and has proven to be just about perfect for my needs. I have only had it for a week and only blown up to 8" X 10" so far but images are crisp and with no noticeable vignetting. I love that it is a relatively fast lens. Of course faster lenses stop action better and can be used in lower lighting situations but I find that the screen being brighter is a plus as well. The only downside of this lens for me is that the lens shade is very wide and so takes up more room that any of my other lenses. I don't want to carry a bigger, bulkier bag around all day so I will have to decide whether to leave the flash or another lens behind.

Excellent extremely wide lens

By Alex

Restaurant photography comprises a good portion of my work and this lens has proved invaluable capturing interior/exterior architectural shots. It makes rooms look huge and puts a lot of space into any shot.

The build quality is wonderful, images are extremely sharp and the colors pop big time.

My only reservation with this lens would be that I really only use it for the above purpose. I'm mainly a portrait photographer so for the price, I question whether I shouldn't have gone with a cheaper lens for the amount of time I use it. Having said that, I've done one landscape shoot with it and it was amazing so I will keep it in my collection for now - until I upgrade to a full frame camera (currently shooting on an a6000). At that point, I might go for the 25mm Batis or 24mm Zeiss. However, first I'll get the 35mm 1.4 Distagon as that may actually prove wide enough as it won't be affected by the crop factor of the a6000's aps-c sensor and is obviously a much more versatile lens.

I shoot regularly for a few restaurants and this lens is perfect for interior/exteriors. Extremely sharp and lens correction is just a click away in Lightroom. Great build quality, too. Feels substantial and solid.

Worth the price!!!

By HolyMoLee

For those of you considering the Sony 10-18mm and the zeiss 12mm, go with the zeiss you won't be disappointed. Took this lense to my trip to Rome and Florence with my Sony a6000 and I had no problem capturing the beautiful architecture and landscapes of Italy. I was hesitant at first to pull the trigger, but just remember that picture or image you want to capture is well worth the price of the memory you'll be keeping and capturing with the clarity of this lense.

    1. The lens hood will not store in reverse on the lens, gets stuck. Keep the hood off and around the lens when storing or keep the hood on the lens in the normal position if you have the room in your bag.
    2. Focus ring feels flimsy. It holds up OK, but I don't understand why Zeiss chose the material and design.

This was my dream lens for my Sony A6000. I wanted to take landscape photos and to dabble in astrophotography, and I thought that this lens would be perfect for that. However, after I used this lens for about a week, I realized that the photos I took with it were not as sharp as I hoped it would be, especially in low light conditions. In particular, I took pictures of my friends playing basketball and ping pong indoors, and the image quality of these photos left me dissatisfied with the lens. I also tried taking pictures of the night sky and it was ok. Online reviewers are suggesting that the Samyang/Rokinon lens is better optically. I figured I don't need the autofocus feature of the Zeiss lens for astrophotography, so I might as well downgrade to the Samyang/Rokinon. I just returned the Zeiss lens earlier this week.

This lens is used for landscape. It is very sharp except of a little softness in the corners even when stopped down to f11. Auto focus is not great. It hunts before settling down to a focus even when it is already in focus. In other words even if you shoot the same scene twice, it shifts out of focus and refocuses. The focusing mechanism is also a little loud. Other then that, a very good lens.

I use this lens on my Sony a6000 for real estate photography and architectural photography. I used to shoot with the Tokina 11-16mm on my crop sensor Canon. When I switched to Sony I thought this would be my replacement. It's far better than the Tokina/Canon setup. Shooting at F13 and above the images are crystal clear and sharp. There is a slight vignetting and distortion on photos, but using Lightroom will clean that right up.

I haven't used it for video, yet.

The only thing that seems a bit strange is the focusing. I've tried different focus modes on the camera and I think that Single Shot AF is the best to use with this lens. With so much information in the frame, I think the camera has a hard time figuring out what is supposed to be in focus. In the other modes, you can hear the motor moving back and forth to try to find focus. I'm not sure it affects focus time or quality, but I'm pretty sure it will affect battery life.

Optics are beautiful, there is no doubt.

My concern is with the internal focus and aperture control mechanisms. The lens appears to rely on a motor that adjusts the focus + aperture which affects the "feel" of the lens. While that's a subjective complaint, in under 30 days, the aperture motor control ceased to work, so I replaced this lens with another 12mm, non-Zeiss brand. I think this lens is probably great for slow, still photography, but if you constantly adjust manually to get the shots you need, the slow response will be frustration and the delicacy of the mechanics will make you nervous about it's longevity post-warranty.
