There's been a lot of outright gushing about this lens, does it live up to the hype? Let's find out.

BUILD QUALITY: All metal construction, smooth, well damped focus ring. Looks intimidating, proportionately speaking, it looks like the 85L on a Rebel! No distance meter - 9/10

FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: Insanely quick, and pretty darn accurate! The OM-D its mated to, doesn't always have the most accurate focus, regardless of lens. The focus squares tend to find something, but it may be something just to the left or the right or just behind the target. All in though, its really quick, and *mostly accurate* - 9/10

OPTICAL QUALITY: Amazing, breathtaking, unbelievable, the superlatives keep getting justifiably heaped onto this lens, and they're all accurate. I simply cannot believe the detail I pull at 100% and 200% crops. Its amazing....

CONCLUSION: It's so rare that anything ever lives up to the hype, hence my natural skepticism when I heard the borderline gushing about the virtues of this lens... I've heard it all before - or so I thought - I'm a Canon shooter and I heard all about the the Canon 135 or 85L - and those lenses are great.... But this Olympus, rises above them all.

I've been shooting professionally for about 7 years now, and this is hands down the sharpest lens I've ever shot with and that includes some pretty sharp lenses. I would put this up against the leica's any day - really, its that good. Olympus has been on a role, specifically with their relatively new OM-D E-M5 and the lenses that accompany it.

This camera and this lens have made me a believer in the micro 4/3rds system.

BOTTOM LINE:

BUILD QUALITY: Rock solid! 9/10

FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: 9/10 - really fast, not always accurate, but I notice the same issue regardless of lens.

OPTICAL QUALITY: 10/10 - stunning. There's just no other word. Leica? Eat your heart out!

QUALITY OF RESULTS: 10/10 - I've never used a sharper lens, and that includes the likes of the Canon 85L, 135L and 70-200 f/4 IS. All are amazing, but the Olympus rises above them all.

VALUE: 8/10 - steep for a prime on an M/43 camera. But all is forgiven when you see the results. I can see the price point driving people away, but if you're in the market for making a switch from a full sized DSLRs, this lens is a must.

OVERALL: 46/50 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

FINAL WORD: If you've been a non-believer in the M43 system and their lenses, if this one can't win you over, you'll never be a convert....

so far, i am not happy with this lens. i know it has gotten good reviews from others, but my experience on three olympus cameras hasn't been that great. focusing has been a problem on both a new pen f and a new omd 10 II, as well as an omd 1. it may be that i am the problem, but i don't think so. i have no such troubles with any of the several other mft lenses i have (maybe a dozen). i am just not sure if it's a lens i want to keep, if i still have time to return it, which i don't know yet. i hate to be a spoil sport. i have always been an olympus/zuiko fan, going back to the old film cameras (1, 2, 3, and 4, plus pen ft, not to mention three ft olympus cameras). but this lens just doesn't function as other similar lenses (the 45, plus three of the longer zooms). it appears not to recognize spot focusing and passes medium distance subjects for the backgrounds. at this point, i would return it if time is running out. if time has already run out, i'm stuck with it. i'll take it to my repair guy to see if he thinks it is operator error or lens failure. i write this only as a signal to others.

Long reach from a solid piece of glass

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I loved this lens from the moment I attached it to my Olympus Om-D 10 Mark II. The low light capability in a telephoto was wonderful. Of course the built in image stabilization makes this telephoto usable and a beauty with crisp shots.

The best part is that two days after I received it, I was able to photograph a major family event. Beautiful memories captured which would not have been so easy without this lens. Thank you Olympus for keeping the fun and the quality in photography!

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

I have been using Panasonic 25mm f1.4 with my Olympus OMD EM5 for quite a while now and it is one of the sharpest lens out there. For landscape, I decided to purchase Olympus 75mm f1.8. I heard that this is one of best micro four thirds lens in the market and I was glad I got it. Wow! the images taken from this lens are incredible. Very sharp with amazing bokeh to boot. If you're on the fence, buy it. I wish I got it sooner.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

This is the lens that enticed me to try a micro 4/3 system (currently the Olympus E-M5 II). Purchased for discreet walk-around photography when traveling to places where the fairly large Nikon D810 with 300mm f/4 PF that I typically use might be threatening to people. My sample is a hair soft in the center at f/1.8, although perfectly usable for portraiture. Stopped down to the f/2.8 to f/8 range, the sharpness is spectacular edge to edge for applications where more DOF is needed. Lately I have been shooting a lot at f/2.8, then applying an edge blurring filter in ON1 Effects to make the shots look as though they were taken at f/1.8 - well worth the extra editing step to combine extreme center sharpness with completely defocused backgrounds. With an equivalent reach of 150mm, the focal length is long enough to bring many architectural details within reach, and stay far enough away from buskers and other performers so as not to annoy them. Focusing is fast and quiet. Have never had to do any corrections for CAs, distortion or vignetting in post. Made of metal with extremely tight tolerances, the 75mm is built to last. With its low magnification, this lens is not designed for macro photography. The one and only annoyance: the hood is not included and the Olympus version is pricey; buying a third party knock off is worth considering. I have a boat-load of Canon and Nikon pro glass, and the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 can stand up to any of it.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

In my opinion, this lens is an absolute must have. In the MFT world, there are quite a few options for lenses, but this is definitely 1 to have in your arsenal. The low light capabilities are very useful especially when you look at the fact that this is a 150mm equivalent lens. The bokeh is nice and creamy. Sharpness is amazing. Contrast is very nice as well. Focusing is very fast and accurate. DO purchase a lens hood as it doesn't come with one. Many third party alternatives to Olympus overpriced one. Build quality is great, very solid and focus ring moves very smoothly. Holy trinity of lenses should include this one! This lens would make an amazing portrait lens if you have a little room to move back a bit and it's great for stealthy candid shots.

You need to focus very carefully. No lens hood for a $ lens? Shame on you Olympus.I will be returning the lens because I have other lenses that better suit my needs.

First off I have read a lot about how people complained about the size of this lens compared to other m4/3rd lens. Yes it is larger than other prime lens in the olympus line up, but for it being 75mm (150mm full frame) it is tiny. It is close in size to any canon or nikon 50mm 1.8 lens. Which those are tiny for those companies line up. I think it is a perfect match for the em1 body. Love the metal construction. This lens is a beast when it comes to sharpness. It is true from what all of the other comments say around the internet that you probably have read. This is a must own lens.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

Short intro, the review not about me ! It's about this wonderful lens ! If your a short/medium telephoto shooter, you must get this lens, my first impression are the built quality, the feel, and performance! Again wow, I own servals systems including Sony mirrorless full frame lenses and bodies, also I shoot sports as a profession full time along with freelancing jobs.
I've been toggling between Sony and M43 back and forth and I honestly can say with my:
              Em1
              12-40 pro
              40-150 pro
              Oly 25/1.8
              Oly 45/1.8
              Oly 75/1.8
              LUMIX 15/1.7
Very pleased with the final results ! Don't get me wrong, full frames have there advantage! However for everyday shoot , travel , lifestyle you will not see a whole lots of difference I quality , many will agree and many would disagree!
I've been testing all the m43 lenses and push the em1 to the limit by shooting all iso settings and I can say that very very pleased with the final results.
Theses days there is so many blogs, information are scattered the internet and I confess I'm sucked into it too, however I'm looking a the package as whole the M43! Will always have a soft spot in my heart.
Do I recommend! For my purpose of shoot and my style the 75/1.8 works for me and I'm finding out that most of the times I shoot either 12/15 range or 45/75mm range I'm also including a pix sample shot in DTLA em1 75/1.8 combo shot wide open and yes fantastic.
There is more things to say I really wanna to keep it short ! Sorry best wishes to all and keep shooting.

If you want a solid prime lens for portraits and other uses, this 75mm works great. Sharp. I also use as prime Oly 12mm, 25mm and 45mm-- like them all-- but wanted the extra flexibility of 75mm (150mm equivalent to DSLR). It is heavier than others that I use, making the camera feel slightly unbalanced in front, until I got used to it.
Like others, I find it annoying that the lens doesn't come with hood, have to purchase one separately.

Comments about M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8 Lens (Black):

Let me start out by saying that if you're considering buying this lens, and are in the market for a prime Micro Four-Thirds short telephoto lens, buy this 75mm f/1.8. That's the short version of the story: buy it in confidence knowing it's great.

I had rented this lens a few times and absolutely loved it every time I used it, but lamented when I had to return it. After renting the lens at least half a dozen times I came to the realization I had probably spent more money on renting it than I would have if I had just bought it, so it's now in my arsenal.

I could have gone with the 40-150mm f/2.8 instead of this, but the f/2.8 aperture is too slow for how I work. This prime is lighter, easier to keep in a bag, and stunning. At f/1.8 or slower, the results are sharp enough that I've been complimented by some colleagues who work in magazines using Canon or Nikon cameras. They're always impressed with how photos this guy turns out in combination with my E-M1, and I feel a weird sort of pride in owning this lens. It's like, being a part of a really obscure club or something.

That said, it's not perfect. I desperately wanted the weather sealing of the PRO line of M.Zuiko lenses, I wanted the manual focus clutch of them as well, and for Pete's sake Olympus. The lens hood was NOT included and that is insulting. Optically, brilliant; but I feel like I was ripped off a bit with the insanely priced hood.

I'm hoping that in the next few years Olympus steps up their game to better compete with other mirrorless competition. If a version 2 of this lens had all of my wish-list items, I'd sell mine in an instant and pick it up.

You'll be pleased with the results of this lens, your clients will be happy, but remember it's not weather sealed, the hood is extra, and the manual focus is practically non-existant.

This is an incredibly sharp, fast, well built lens that produces great color and contrast. The only down-side to this lens is that if you want a lens hood you have to purchase one separately. I also had to buy a separate hood for my 45mm. I don't understand Olympus' reasoning here--it shouldn't be so.

This is lens is just one more reason to consider mFT over traditional SLRs.
