I purchased this lens specifically to use at the wider apertures not for more light per se, but for the very shallow DOF. I plan to use this mostly for close ups such as still life and food shots, shots where I want a very soft background, candid shots in social gatherings and casual portraits. As bonus, it certainly has given me some "breathing room" in low light conditions.

I checked numerous reviews and this lens seemed to measure sharper from F1.4 through F4 than the AF-S 50mm F1.5G lens, which then measured sharper after F4. I don't plan on using this lens much beyond F4 so I choose the AF-D version.

I am currently using this lens on a D80. So we have full frame lens made for 35mm film cameras being used on a DX-format digital camera. I added the Hoya Pro 1 Digital filter to help eliminate internal reflections that the coatings on the newer design lenses are supposed to eliminate. The field of view is of course more like a 75mm on a film camera so you do get slight image compression you might expect from a telephoto in that range. The slight image compression and effective length of 75mm presents both advantages and challenges.

Personally, I LOVE the color and contrast rendering of the AF-D lenses more so than the modern AF-S lenses. I am sure this will be a minority opinion. At F1.4 I was not expecting razor sharp and it is not, though it is sharp enough for what I wanted. Stopped down a bit it seems as sharp as my other (more modern design) lenses. At wide apertures, the colors are very natural and not overly saturated or contrasty...which is precisely what I wanted.

The bokeh can at times exhibit some "outlines" or appear busy or jagged, though I find this much as the same as on the AF 50mm F1.8D lens that I have tried.

Focus is as fast and accurate as my other lenses. I purchased the Grey Market version. The lens is currently doing everything I had hoped for. Being relatively new to using a DSLR I am looking forward to exploring the world at F1.4!

I usually shy away from primes, but the small size and large aperture made this one appealing since I shoot at crowded club events. After a few weeks of use, I find that the lens is very sharp stopped down to F/2.8, but at 1.4 images are very soft. Focus is accurate and fast, a definite plus, but that's where all the good ends. I'm disappointed with the build quality as the lens just feels too plastic. It just doesn't compare to any of the newer nikkor primes, such as the 60mm AF-S or the 85mm PC-E. Also, the bokeh is a bit harsh due to the 7 bladed design. The lens is prone to CA and flaring, so you have to be careful when shooting in certain conditions. Overall, I'm not too impressed, but the small size and speed of this lens makes it useful for club shoots. Nikon seriously needs to update some of there primes and this lens would be a good start.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

After discussing a 1.8 fixed lens, I was talked into a 1.4. The depth and clarity I get with the lens is superb. I'm rating a 5 because it does everything I need to so far. Still at the amateur level so it is hard to give a more detailed review.

Picked this up because of the uptick in film interest. I wanted to use it on my FE2 and still be able to use it on my D700...perfect solution!

Every photog needs one in their bag

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

As a pro I have owned a couple of the new AFS-50mm 1.4s and this older model out does them all. Super sharp at all f stops. Yeah, the auto focus is louder than the new model and the focus ring rotates. Focus is just as fast and accurate. I use on a Nikon D810 and get outstanding results, always. Save some $ and put one of these nifty fifties in your bag.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

I picked the D model over the G due to financial constraints and not needing the features of the G currently.
The lens arrived in great shape with official Nikon paperwork and warranty card. The manual sheet/specs is pretty lengthy and in many languages, however I just downloaded the PDF for ease of use.
So far, my experience with this lens and the D7200 has been great. I had been researching prime lenses and decided a 50mm would be best. I could have gotten a used 50mm f/1.4 locally but this was the best deal on the D model. All focus and aperture features functions just fine.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

I am primarily a wedding videographer and have been using my D750 with the 24-120 F4 and 70-200 F2.8 mainly. (I also use a D7200 with the Tokina 11-16 and 17-55 F2.8 on a Glidecam)

I have never owned a 50mm and finally decided to pull the trigger for something different this season... and wow! It sure is different!

The bokeh off thing lens in fantastic! Also, the lens is very sharp and produces great colors. I have now been using this lens about 50% of the time on all my shoots so far in 2016.

On the photography side, the results are the same. Beautiful bokeh and great colors.

Wish I would have gotten this sooner.

I love this lens so much. It's a sweet deal for what you get. Not terribly expensive as far a all things photography go. The bokeh is awesome and the focus is wonderfully crisp. I love this lens for portraits and also like to use it for landscapes. It is also super small and light, making it good for travel or hiking photography. I highly recommend this lens!

Great lens, hands down. If you are going to use on a D3200, you will not have autofocus AND there is a switch that you will have to pin down in order to adjust your f-stop. If not, the camera will display an error and only take photos at a f16. It is still worth it to buy this lens at this price.

Comments about Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens:

This fast, lightweight lens is great for photographing people hand-held in available light. Candid street photos in black-and-white? Check. Family photos in busy settings requiring fast autofocus? Check. Photojournalism shots in poor light? Check.

Remember that this lens acts as a 75mm lens -- a slight telephoto -- on a DX camera like my D7100 with a cropped sensor

If AFS focusing is not important to you, this lens is superb! Tack sharp and terrific Bokeh when used for "normal" portraits. I have used both versions of this lens and I can honestly say I see no discernible difference. I use this lens on my D700 and the focus just snaps! Nicely made and a true Nikon bargain in it's lens lineup.
