I bought a pair of these to put in my new Synology Diskstation (I reviewed it as well if you are in the market for one). THey are built for 24/7 use. They're a bit more $$ than standard drives but isn't your data worth it? mine sure is.

I purchased 4 drives and a DS415+ NAS box 2 weeks ago.

The next day after I initialized the box and copied my data over it reported one drive was unplugged. I thought it was due to a loose bay so I replugged it (with shutdown and restart properly). The drive showed up again and I rebuilt the RAID 5 volume. It took roughly a day.

The next day the same issue happened again. The same disk was reported unplugged. I thought it was some glitch of the NAS system. I replugged it and rebuilt the volume again. The drive showed up.

And it was reported unplugged again. I talked to the NAS support and told them it was their hardware's problem, because SMART test reported no error and I have never seen a hard drive failing on the first day like this (I started playing with 500MB hard drives back in last century and have seen a lot). I was suggested to change the bay to see if it is the bay's problem or the drive's. So I switched two drives and rebuilt the volume for the 3rd time. All seemed ok again.

And you know what, it turned out to be the drive's problem. The drive failed the same way as before but this time it was in a different bay.

The drive is now being sent back to B&H for a replacement. I have no idea how WD does QA.

Comments about WD 3TB Red 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD Retail Kit:

This is my 4th WD Red drive. I have two Synology NAS arrays and stagger the lifespan of drives, so just buying the last of my bunch (in about 8,000 - 10,000 hour increments). What can you say about a hard drive? They're not sexy, they're not even visible, but they need to work. The Red drives are solid. They do what they're supposed to do and run like they're supposed to, working with the NAS OS to provide the feedback you'll need to gauge the stability / health of your data. Great product.

Comments about WD 3TB Red 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD Retail Kit:

I have used wd drives before and their performance was one of the reasons that I chose these drives. The other reason was price. These are NAS drives and I am using them in a Netgear RN 202 NAS drive. Install was seamless plug and play, did not require any driver downloads.

Comments about WD 3TB Red 5400 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD Retail Kit:

We ordered these to replace three 1TB drives in our Drobo 5D. The first one installed in Bay 0...no problem, though the capacity did not increase. Drobo says you have to replace two to see a difference.
Put the second one in Bay 1...failed; tried the third one...failed!!
The Drobo diagnostic report showed "both drives have failed due to full timeouts," whatever that means.
So they'll be on their way back to B&H tomorrow for an exchange. I hope we were just unlucky. The same model 1TB drives we've had in there for three years have worked flawlessly.
One of the two stars is for 'benefit of the doubt.'

I am sorry but WD's warranty is a joke. Bought two brand new HDDs, one failed a few months after being in my RAID 1 NAS. Returned under warranty (had to pay for shipping) - got back a RECERTIFIED HDD. Which, of course, failed after 1 month and lost ALL data. Returned it again (had to pay for shipping) - again got a RECERTIFIED HDD which was simply DOA and could not start at all. So their "5 year warranty" is simply feeding you with faulty recertified HDDs until you run out of money for shipping them dead ones. Great idea, WD. Sorry, cannot trust you my data anymore. Going to your competitors.

I now have 4 of these drives and have been using one for over 2 years. These drives are excellent for using in a setup that houses movies for Plex, as I use them for. If I were to get rid of these drives, I'd only replace them with their Pro counterparts.

This drive lasted 10 months in my Synology NAS and then crashed. The warranty replacement lasted less than 48 hours. Let's see if WDC takes care of this or if I have to pay to send their bad replacement drive back.

Installed in an external USB 3.0 adapter and initialized and formatted fine, 1 partition 2.7 TB as expected. Moved to internal SATA cable and Windows 8.1 disk manager showed as 1 partition and unallocated space and would not do anything to the drive. After much online reading, I had to use a DOS program to reset the drive (while on SATA cable) and then disk manager initialized and formatted it fine with1 partition 2.7 TB as expected. Who knew... I always prepped my drives using the external USB 3.0 device previously but it won't work with > 2 TB drives.
