There are a number of things that I love about this camera. First is the small size, there's certain activities I want to photograph when a small point and shoot form is the best. I also find the new tilt screen to be very handy for low or high angle shots. The images produced are super sharp, some vignetting is visible but its easily correctable in software. The overall color production is very pleasing as well, producing neutral colors that serve me well. The option for showing a level guide in the display is cool too.

There are of course a few things that bug me. The most glaring is the power on/off button. You can quickly turn the camera on, but to get it to power you have to carefully press down perfectly vertically. So about ¾ of the time it doesn't work for my stubby fingers. As I tend to use this camera while engaging in active shooting situations this is a bigger pain for me than for most folks. This 'feature' is helpful I'm sure for those times when you mistake the power off button for the shutter (potentially turning off the camera when you thought you were using the shutter button).

Another small complaint is in regards to the on-screen graphics that 'explain' each mode selected when you turn the shooting mode dial. They can be easily turned off by slightly depressing the shutter, but after awhile even that is annoying. (perhaps this 'feature' can be shut off and I haven't figured it out yet. )

The screen is easy to scratch up, so be careful. Given the rest of the camera is so robust it's a bit of a surprise that some tougher material isn't used. I may invest in one of those stick-on screen protectors that people get for the cell phones and things soon.

Although its not Sony's fault its probably worth mentioning that if you use Adobe Lightroom 4 you're out of luck in using this camera in RAW mode. I was able to update my Photoshop CS5 ACR to accommodate the camera, but there was no upgrade available for LR4. I then downloaded Lightroom 5 and it worked fine. No big deal, but I do hate getting a new camera then find myself having to shell out more bucks for software upgrades because older versions are no longer supported.

The number one question people would likely have about this camera is whether you can use it to replace your DSLR. No, but if I have to forgo the weight, size and intimidation factor of a DSLR this camera is a great choice.

I had this camera for several months and was moderately happy with it - until I really needed it to work. Then I was refused warranty support while the camera was in warranty, run around for weeks by customer service, and finally gave up. The camera is now a paper weight, not being heavy enough for a doorstop. The Good: The lens is sharp, and in daylight the chip produces some very nice, sharp images. The controls layout may be as good as a photographer will ever find. I shoot a lot of manual shots, purposefully darker, lighter, crazy colors and otherwise difficult shots for a point and shoot to understand. The controls are so good, you can nail any situation, and nail it fast. Just to see if it could be done, I shot the same angle, and view handheld as I was shooting with my Nikon D800 on a tripod for a professional assigment. They only needed web quality work, and I used the Sony shot to save myself time. They were great shots. The Bad: The autofocus in C (Continuous) mode is unusable. Truly a disaster. Hunts like crazy and when it finally takes the image, its off. The S (Single) mode works well. Just don't use the camera for anything that is moving much. The chip is noisy. Granted I use a Nikon D800, and am used to printing up to 22x17 on a regular basis with no further post processing than what is offered by Adobe. That won't be enough with this camera. As soon as it gets dark, or you are in any type of non-natural (non full spectrum) light, you will need extra help. There are great programs out there, and given an extra $ investment you will be good to go.EXCESS HUMIDITY shorts the main processor. Really. I am not making this up. Not kidding. I took this camera to Disney with my kids in August. It was ugly hot and humid. The camera died walking around disney world. Not getting wet. No water rides. No rainstorms. Just walking around in Florida with 95 degrees and high humidity killed the camera. The first and second technical support person, and the Sony Authorized repair center told me "it happens". It also voids the warranty. Water damage via humidity. After that, your out of luck. I called for weeks, but could never get a return call, could never speak to anyone other than the first line people barely able to speak broken English, and was always told that I would receive a call back. After weeks I still never spoke to a customer service agent. Sony went from a customer centered company to the worst customer service I have EVER dealt with. And I had Verizon, and bought an early model Dell computer. It gets no worse than Sony. So, bottom line, great camera, if you don't mind buying a few, and throwing them out as they stop working. Sony will not honor their warranty, and the camera is not reliable. My jaw hit the ground when my wife said, "I guess you should have brought the big camera" after 16 years of telling me to just bring a point an shoot. Never again.

just enough pro features in a very small package

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

This is a good choice for non-professionals who want their photos to be a cut above the usual. After years of using simple point-and-shoot models or my iphone, I wanted something with manual features like my old 35mm film camera. I chose the rx100 mkII over the similar Panasonic and Olympus models because the interface is complex but easy to learn. It gives manual access to shutter speed, ISO, focal length, etc., but the auto modes are pretty good too. The form factor is so small I can put it in a shoulder bag and forget it. I was planning to buy the Sony 6000 but saw how big it is relative to the RX100, and decided that having interchangeable lenses was not important, since the zoom on the RX gives focal lengths equivalent to the ones I used almost constantly with my film camera (28-35-90).

do NOT get this camera for underwater photography

By Patrice

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I got an rx 100ii several years ago along with an expensive housing and strobe. I was constantly disappointed with the focus on the camera but assumed that this related to my abilities as a novice underwater photographer. I learned to take 30-40 shots of anything interesting with hopes of getting 1 or 2 usable photos.

Last week I was on a snorkel trip. One of the people in the party had a waterproof Nikon Coolpix. He was a novice snorkeler and had never done any photography. 80-90% of his photos were crisp and sharp and about 30-40 % of mine with the much more expensive housing and camera were in focus.

Maybe the camera works better on land but since I got it for UW photography I would have to say it is a dud!

Great performing camera in a compact design.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

Overall, Highly complex camera with plenty of features and high quality. At 20 megapixels the image quality is excellent. There are plenty of settings to utiliize so I would highly recommend reading through the manual a few times. This camera packs a powerful punch so get ready for a very versitile and professional camera in a compact design. I like the scene selection settings the best but also the intelligent auto settings take great shots as well. The Superior A+ overlay is a bit slow but does layer shots and creates beautiful pictures. I can tell it will take me a while to be able to understand and utilize the settings in this great little camera. Button placement is good, and placed well for a small design. A few flaws not in camera design but what came with my last compact - no external battery charger, they want you to charge the batt through the camera, Battery life seems ok but not great, however this camera does a lot. The optical zoom is good but could be a bit more powerful, perhaps 4x more. I don't know about Sony's repair or customer service ratings, but Canon's reputation is excellent, I wanted to get into a Canon instead but this RX-100M2 was around $550 in comparison. My recommendations: You will need an extra battery and external charger. The Watson batt and charger seem to work well. (B&H Photo is a great source and do well with the pricing and packaging.) LCD screen protector - cut one down from a cell phone pack. Small case - Case logic DCB-302 works well for $10. If shooting movies you will need a rig, like the Opteca X-grip or similar. A small mount/clampete - High Sierra M2. Overall great camera, you will not be dissapointed.

Great Camera

By JRock

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

When looking for a camera i had a handful of musts:
* It had to be portable - This camera fits easily into my jeans pocket (without a case). Which makes its super easy to take out when I want to take a shot of my family
* it had to take great pictures in low light situations - This is probably the area where this camera excels the most. I'm stunned at how crisp the images are with virtually no light.
* it had to record high quality video - the sharpness of the videos created by this camera are incredible. Even in fast motion like sports

the only cons i have:
* The camera itself is a little on the heavy side.
* I've noticed that when taking family shots of more than 2 people, there's a tendency for the image to be out of focus - especially in the auto modes. I've had to almost ditch using the cameras built in auto settings because of this annoyance.
* there's a lot of modes and settings. So if you are someone who just wants to pick up the camera and take shots, you might be overwhelmed with the number of options and customization
* I've nearly dropped this camera twice in the last couple weeks. Each time my heart stopped. I wish there was a protective case i could add to the body that would not add much size to the camera - that would serve to lessen the blow of damage it may incur on an impact

I've had the Sony RX100 since it first came out. Took it everywhere and everyone loved my pictures. It finally broke and I used one of my other cameras but the quality is just not the same. Broke down and bought the RX100 II as my birthday present to myself! Best present ever!

I purchased this camera to take on vacation. I don't want to take my bulky SLR and stand out like the tourist that I will be:-) Great little camera... almost a little TOO small for my hands, but it just takes some time. Great features, from full auto to full manual. I like it a lot

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

Really like this camera; I slip it into a pocket and have it when those unexpected photo ops present themselves. The usual lens on my DSLR is a 17-70 macro so I don't surrender any capabilities with this Sony. The color rendition of the sensor is top notch. I would recommend it to anyone.

All camera text is in an Asian language

By Nicholas

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I just turned on this nearly $500 product to find I have no idea what language this is.  Ironically the only English text on the screen is "error" when I turned it on.  The serial number plate is all in the same tongue, so I have no idea how this was missed in the repackaging/shipping.  I'm awaiting customer service's response and will update or delete this post depending on their actions.

Great pocket camera for traveling & shoots RAW

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I bought this camera before going on a trip and while it took a little bit of time to get used to the programming, I enjoyed the camera. This is the first pocket camera I've had that shoots raw and I love it. There is not secret that the menu isn't as well organized as some other cameras but I finally figured a system that works for me. I shot both RAW/jpeg and it can use up some GBs.

Compact Substitute for the A7r

By Triffid Nursery Landscape Company

from Berkeley, CA

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I bought this as a backup for when I don't want to carry around the A7r. I've only been using it about a week, so far so good. It nails the focus and I like that it has almost all the same features found on my bigger camera. I watched a couple of youtube videos explaining how to use the menu and adjust the settings, which helped getting started. So far, I've reviewed some of the captured images, of course they don't have the detail and clarity up close that the A7r has, but when I'm out and about, I've been carrying this in my pocket, so it's perfect for that. Wish the II it had the EVF, but so far it hasn't been an issue seeing the screen in daylight.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I wanted a good point and shoot camera to take with me on my travels. I didn't want to carry my DSLR on vacations where I wanted to pack light. For awhile, I was debating between the RX100 III vs the RX100 II, but then decided that the improvements don't worry the price difference. I just had a mini vacation where I decided to test run this camera, and so far I love it!! I would have given this review 5 stars but for one flaw.. I felt like the camera was a little bit difficult to navigate in. It's not very intuitive, but one you play with it, it makes sense.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera:

I bought this camera for a backpacking trip this summer. It had the best reviews by far for a lightweight camera without sacrificing image quality. I've experimented with it hiking, at sunset, and this past weekend at a horse show. The image quality I was able to capture from a great distance, with poor lighting, was excellent. So far, I am very impressed! I've taken at least 100 pictures over the last 2 weeks and the battery still shows fully charged. It's been very easy to use. My only complaint so far is that I have been unable to use the WiFi to connect the camera to my phone. It's probably operator error, but the instructions don't seem to be the best for explaining this.
