As a professional videographer in local news I use a Panasonic HPX-370 every day. With my style of shooting a lot of people have told me I should look into still photography.

I have a lot of print colleges in the field that shoot on a 5DIII, 1D-x and Nikon D4. They all have expensive Nikkor or L-glass and I definitely see the beauty in what they produce. The more we talk tech, the more I wanted a DSLR, and maybe start doing some side still work.

After much thought, looking at the prices of full frame vs. crop frame sensors, Nikon vs. Canon, I decided that I could afford a crop frame, and save the money for nice glass. A "pro" camera, with low quality glass to me proved a difference.

I was about to buy a 6D when this camera came out, and honestly given the features I was sold on the 70D.

As a video guy, the articulated screen did a lot for me and the notion of pulling focus like on my iphone was neat. I figured with an upgraded sensor from the 7D (too impatient for the mkII) I would be buying a starter camera that would pave the way for me to buy a "pro" rig someday. The Rebel class statistics just didn't impress me.

In video I always go low gain more light. With this camera, getting fast glass and shooting with the highest shutter possible at 100-800 ISO is the key. It produces remarkable image quality to me for the price. The in camera noise reduction is pretty solid and the focus is remarkably fast. (I gave up pulling my own focus, AF is faster.) Know the limitations of your camera, and expect noise if you don't light accordingly.

If you like to do portraits the 50mm f1.4 is the way to go. (remember a budget) The 18-135 STM lens is quiet, and has a nice throw on a crop sensor. It makes me question carrying around the HPX-370. (aside from no pro audio inputs.)

A headphone jack would be awesome.

The camera is good for low ISO long exposure (I want to take it to a stargazer party, (I considered a 60D with the Hydrogen Alpha chip)

I would use it instead of my old Sony Z1U for my next "movie" production. I've realized the DOF is so much better with a DSLR than a video camera. The Dynamic Range with a polarizer astounds me.

Save the money if Full Frame vs. Crop frame is in question, take a few features, and get nice glass with your money.

Remember it's not the camera that makes the photographer, it's the photographer that makes the camera!!

You'll never see in these comments nothing related with the life time of a camera.
Well, let me tell you that these cameras EOS 70D (maybe others too butt this is the one I checked out and I own one) have a trouble with this issue: THE MAINBOARD. It will stuck your camera between one and three years for sure. You can check it out in the net. Just google: 70D Error 70, or 70D error 80, and you will see how many people are crying because they lose their cameras. In fact, in the most popular social net, there is an open group of people desperate because of this issue.
A new mainboard (if your camera has not warranty) and the canon service to change, plus the shipping back and forward from the service, will cost you a bill almost like a new camera.
So question is, would you buy a camera that you know it will last only a couple years?

good with wide angle & shorter telephoto

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

This camera can take good photos for its price if you put the right lens on it. With a 24-70mm or a 70-200 it focuses well and can take good photos. The drawback is, when you use 300mm+ fixed focal length lenses, it is very difficult to focus. Overall it is a good buy for short-mid size lenses but not ideal for super-telephoto.

Motherboard failure after 2.5 years

By Gustav

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I bought my 70D in December 2014 and would rate it as one of my best purchases ever... until the main motherboard blew. The most highly rated "negative" review on this page is 100% accurate.

After 2.5 years of careful and limited holiday use, I received the infamous "Error 80" code last week. This basically means there was a boot up error and nothing works. All buttons are dead, nothing responds, screen stays black etc. Repairs at Canon will set you back between $400 and 500 for a new motherboard, labor and shipping.

Based on my research it appears to have something to do with the motherboard not being able to handle the live view and video features after some use. Almost like they tried to squeeze the last bit of latest technology (at the time) onto an older motherboard not designed to handle it.

Like the other reviews state, just simply search for "Canon 70D Error 80" and you'll see there's plenty of noise out there.

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

If your using this camera for video work LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. The 70D has a faulty PCB board and burns up roughly after a year. The repair cost is $430. Canon fails to recognize this problem in the 70D and has not recalled them.

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

When upgrading from my T2i, I chose the 70D because it was just a little faster than the 7D (mrk I).

It's a wonderful camera for those who are ready to move past beginner and for those who just want to hover in the intermediate range to avoid expert level prices.

I've used this camera for a lot of sports photography - basketball, football, baseball, hockey and a wide range of community action shots.

I have also used it for an array of artistic shots.

It was well worth the purchase, however I also understood this camera would not get me the glossy, breath-taking, low light, long exposure shots of my favorite photographers.

This is still a learning camera but a wonderful tool. I absolutely recommend it.

*My workhorse lens is the 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom with a B+W 77mm MRC polarizing filter.
*For sports I use the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 kit lens (even over the 70-200mm) with a basic Tiffen UV filter.

I am taking a photography class with this camera and have learned a lot about the features it has. So far, I've really enjoyed it. My daughter probably likes it more than me and won't touch the T1i that I had.

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I never even thought of it as i've owned multiple Canon cameras that lasted years. Safe to say that they quality of their materials in this camera is poor at best and their warranty is even worse, only 1 yr in length. My 70d only lasted me 2.5 years and i take very good care of my camera.....

Honestly a better beginner/professional camera than anything

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

I would honestly recommend this camera as a beginner camera over the earlier Rebel series models. The touch screen is easy to use, while the buttons are in slightly different places, everything makes sense. Awesome for short filmmaking, and taking professional photographs. I wish the bundle hav come with an extra memory card, but the extra batteries are a life saver if you're filming. Also you will not find a cheaper price without shipping or tax (seattle), so...Get it here!

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

We use this camera in an agency setting to produce client videos, and so far have been very happy with its performance. We've been satisfied with the clean and crisp quality of the videos we have produced, even without the lens attachment. The only drawback on this model when it comes to video production is the lack of a second audio channel, but that is to be expected with a DSLR.

I would recommend this to anyone getting started in the world of client video marketing production.

Still a key player in the lineup

By Zackery

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The Canon 70d is still a deserving body in the current EOS body line. While the 80d may be out now the 70d still would be my choice. I now own two of them. The Wifi is a golden tool for me, especially since people want to view photos on social media pretty much as soon as they're taken.

I shoot dirt track racing and it's a very dynamic animal and especially with photographers and the images created. My 70d hangs with the best of them. It's gotten me a magazine cover in my few short years of shooting. It's also sold me tons of photos too (got to know what you're doing though). It's very user friendly but still shows signs of being a very semi pro body.

I would recommend this body over the 7d mkII. Only thing you give up is the weather sealing and magnesium alloy body. Price difference is a big thing too. All I'm saying is once you give this 70D a chance, you won't regret it!

Fantastic Camera

By Graham

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The Canon 70D is a great camera. I use it for everything i do. It's great for video and great for photos. The Dual pixel auto focus is amazing for doing sports video. I'm super happy with it. It's also very durable, I've dropped it, used it in pooring rain and -30 Celsius weather as well. Everything runs awesome still with no problems. The only issue I've ever had is when i turn the camera on and go straight into video, there's a rare occasion of the recording stopping 7-10 seconds after i hit record. It's not a big deal for me because i shoot a random shot first before i do anything serious but it is a little weird. ( I use cards with 95mb/s - 150mb/s). However other than that, it's been a great first camera.

It awesome, ergonomic for Video, don't need acessories

Comments about Canon EOS 70D DSLR Camera (Body Only):

The 70D is great. I bought it specifically for Video. I shoot a lot of interviews for documentary's and corporate videos and i wanted to upgrade my DSLR (from the 600D) to something that would work a little better in low light. Also i mostly shoot with a Sony NX30 camcorder but i wanted a DSLR specifically to shoot interviews with Shallow DOF my final choices were between the 7D mrkII, the 6D and the 70D. Why i went with the 70D over the others is because of the ergonomics of it; it has an articulating screen, it tracks subjects so if i'm shooting interviews of people standing and they move i don't have to hunt and adjust - esp if i'm conducting the interview. if i bought either of the other two i'd have to buy one of those mini monitors and the mount etc but they 70D has all that i need for the moment and saving money on the body meant i could get the Sigma lens. very happy with it - have only had it for a week now.
