A decent lens that covers a lot of ground. I got this for travel and backpacking.

PROS: good image quality across the zoom range, small, light, compact, no lens creep, metal mount, 5yr warranty, manual focus override, easy 1 finger focus, low CA, and good VR system. This lens works well for just about any situation and makes a great travel lens. Not superior in any aspect, but very good in all areas.

CONS: Zoom ring is tight, perhaps to avoid lens creep. Not ideal for video, like all all-in-one lens' it has a lot of distortion on both ends. But it's easily corrected in camera and LR5. Harder to correct in video software. Also, no lens hood.

Only regret is, I didn't get it as a kit with the D7100. Below is a panning shot using the VR at 70mm 1/20 sec, ISO 100, f/27. ND filter was used. Also, a Panorama of the Strip shot from the edge town about 15 mils away at 140mm, ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/2 sec on a tripod.

This isn't a bad lens, but it's not the best lens in my kit. It's nice and light compared to most of my other lenses, and the telephoto range is hard to beat especially if you want to travel relatively light. Sharp enough, especially in the middle, fast enough and nice and bright. A little soft in the corners, some noticeable CA in certain conditions (purple fringes on bare trees against a burned-out winter sky), and loads of distortion. Some flare shooting right into the sun, but not necessarily unattractive, although it loses contrast. As of right now my D7100 doesn't correct the distortion in-camera (I'm sure there will be a firmware upgrade) but DxO Optics Pro software corrects it. The distortion doesn't bother me since it is easily correctable. Hasn't yet been calibrated by PT Lens, but the author will calibrate it if somebody sends him the images. I haven't gotten around to it yet. As part of a package deal, this lens was inexpensive, and I knew what I was looking for - a good enough lens as a casual walking-around lens. In my opinion, that's what this is. If you are looking for the best lens for your 24mp DX format camera, this isn't it, but to replicate the range with the best image quality you need a collection lenses, and much higher cost. I would not recommend this lens as your primary option for the best image quality from a 24mp camera, but I would recommend it as a convenient lens option in a kit that includes some higher quality lenses for your most important pictures. As long as you know what you are getting and you are OK with it (I am), then it's fine, especially if it is heavily discounted like mine was.

A Nice Surprise!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I recently upgraded from my venerable D80 to the brand new D7500. I had purchased the body-only and continued to use my original 18-135 lens. I was quite impressed with the new combo.

Weeks later I decided to pass my D80 to a niece who has interest in DSLR photography. She needed a lens of course so I gave here the 18-135 and contacted B&H to see if I could still get the D7500+lens kit at the discounted price. NO TROUBLE AT ALL! I paid the diff and they sent the new lens. B&H is the best!

I expected the new 18-140 lens essentially to be the same as the old one but I was nicely surprised. The speed of auto-focus is significantly faster than the older lens (both compared on the D7500.) And the VR seems to be improved too. Combined with the extended ISO range of the D7500 which enables fast shutter speeds even under low light conditions, I can capture quality images quickly when needed, and also have the option to tinker with the more advanced settings when I prefer.

I'm not a pro but there are times when I have to be the photographer at certain public events and my new setup makes it much easier to capture crisp pictures when zoomed-in and the subjects are moving. I'm sure the pro's out there will find something they don't like as always, but this product represents the quality and durability I've come to expect from Nikon.

And as a bonus I'm a hero to my niece!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I have been very happy with the purchase of this lens. I recently took a trip to Europe, and wanted a zoom lens longer than the kit lens that came with my D3400 camera, and only wanted to carry the one lens. This lens worked great, provided great photos, and is just as fast as the kit lens. The slight increase in weight over the kit lens was not an issue.

Good Kit Lens with D7500

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

This came with a D7500 as a kit lens. The price with camera makes it a great deal. On its own, you would have to weigh out the reach you are going to need - you may want the 18-200 or 18-300 for best overall reach. Optically, unless you compare this to fast fixed-focus lenses it is just as good as the two mentioned Nikons and better quality image than off brand Tamron, Sigmas out there. Paired with the D7500 focus is quiet and incredibly fast.

So much better than the kit lens (18-55mm) that came with the camera. Better built, better glass, and bigger zoom. A good go-everywhere lens, you can't go wrong with this.

Really nice all in one lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I purchased this lens along with my new Nikon D7200 and I would have to say that it's a really nice lens. This is my first all in one type zoom lens and have shot several images with it and the overall quality is pretty good. The sharpness is about the same through out the zoom range. I had shot some fireworks recently with it handheld at night with an exposure of 1/250@f:5 with the ISO set on auto, of which was around 25,600. The images were good, however when viewed at 100% were very muddy and lacking in detail, of which is to be expected at this level. The only drawbacks of this lens is the lack of a zoom lock and I have to get used to the way in which it rotates, opposite of what I'm used to. The close focus is really great, I can get within a foot of the subject.

Super "Super Zoom"

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Got this for my D7200 for use for general travel photography. It is reasonably small (compared to the 24-120 f/4) and is quite sharp. For it's performance, I think that it's somewhat under priced (if there can be such a thing in modern lenses) as it's the best "super zoom" I've ever tried. The 18-140 yields a travel friendly 27-210 on the APS-C D7200. It's f/3.5 to 5.6 so, without flash, it is most useful in bright light or outdoors but, properly used, it will get good to excellent photos almost any where. I guess, in sum, this with the D7200 is the best travel lens combo that I've ever owned and I have owned the 18-200, 24-300 and I own both the Nikon 80-200 and 24-70 f/2.8.

I had this lens previously and it was my main lens. Took many photos and enjoyed it. One day it fell from my pocket, and I kicked it. Not broken, but not working anymore. I have saved and waited to purchase a replacement and this is it! I am back to taking photos again like there is no end. It is dependable and works great for me.

Great portrait lens when you are set up in a single location (for background) and can zoom to fit different sized subjects.
Only 4 stars due to wide angle not that sharp for large groups even @ 5.6 which seems to be the sweet spot for this lens

Very versatile. With higher ISO now available on my D7200 I can get by nicely without f/2.8 although I can't separate subject from bg. So, I'm very satisfied with the lens and especially the lower price.

Do not expect sharpness

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

It's a good value lens, no doubt.
Very convenient because of its zoom range and light weight. It's useful in situations when I can't bring a whole bunch of lenses or when I'd rather not take my expensive gear.
On the optical side, though, it's very poor. Not very sharp at all, some very noticeable chromatic aberration, bokeh is not the smoothest I've ever seen... I bought it together with a new camera, and I actually had to double check if the sensor or focus motor was defective in any way. I have lenses from the 1980s that make sharper photos. Maybe I got a bad copy... but maybe not.
ACR does help a lot with the CA and the sharpness, but it's still nothing compared to a more expensive lens. What did I expect, paying so little on such a seemingly versatile lens?

Bought this with a D7100 body. I've used it with VR off and on. In low light, VR has helped a lot with photos. VR always helpful with video. In normal daylight, I've usually switched VR off. The lens is heavier than a typical 18-55 but lighter than some non Nikon lens I tried before buying this one.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I was looking for a good, all-in-one, walk-around lens for my D7100. I have a D700 with lots of big, heavy, fast, sharp, expensive lenses, but needed a lens for the lighter D7100 when distance and conditions dictate only a single body and lens. After perhaps a hundred exposures over a range of conditions and subjects I think this is an adequate but much less than wonderful lens.

GOOD: Reasonably compact and light for its range of focal length and aperture. 18 to 140mm is very good for almost all general walk-around scenes. The vibration reduction is quite good and the on/off switch is conveniently located. Vignetting is acceptable at all focal lengths and apertures with only a single filter attached. Foreground focus(in front of the focus spot) is quite good and surprisingly deep. Construction seem substantial.

LACKING: The optics. Practically speaking, this is a 24 to 140, f/8 to f/16 lens. Most of the time you will be disappointed outside this range. The focus near the edges of all frames is very soft. This is true at all focal lengths and apertures and is awful at 18mm. There is a noticeable improvement to "almost acceptable" at 22mm and to "adequate" at 24mm. Stopping the lens down to f/8 makes a huge improvement in overall sharpness at all focal lengths. On the flip side diffraction is quite pronounced at apertures smaller than f/22 and is really only eliminated at f/16. Given the good foreground focus, I have discovered that overall focus is improved by focusing slightly beyond a centered subject. Edge softness is visibly improved by such fudging.

I recommend this lens with reservations. It's a good lens if you can live with the consumer-level optics.
