AES Fall 2007 Convention Wrap-Up

By Robert Morton

AES Convention

The annual AES (Audio Engineering Society) convention is one of the world's largest gatherings of Pro Audio professionals. This exciting event hosts a full program of technical papers, seminars, and workshops, but what really attract the crowds are the exhibits of professional audio equipment. Every other year the AES convention finds its way to the Javitz Center here in New York City. Luckily for us, it's located just a few blocks from the B&H SuperStore on Ninth Avenue. Our eager team wasted no time getting over to the show to check out all of the new hardware and software rolled out this year. Here's a quick review of some of the notable audio products we discovered at this year's show.

The new Digidesign C|24 is a mid-format control surface designed for use with Pro Tools systems in mid-sized professional and advanced project studios. Ideal for both post-production and music production environments, the C|24 provides direct hands-on access to recording, editing, routing, and mixing functions in Pro Tools software. Drawing upon the legacy of the Control|24, this affordable solution combines an intuitive control surface with a full complement of analog inputs and a versatile monitoring section. Digidesign has also released Pro Tools 7.4 software, an update with numerous music and post-production features and workflow enhancements. Notable new features include: Elastic Time, a new music composition and production tool that allows users to change the tempo and timing of audio files easily in real time, and improved compatibility with Avid video systems (including Avid Unity ISIS shared storage systems).

Sennheiser MKH-8000 series modular mic

Sennheiser unveiled their new MKH-8000 series modular microphone system. These ultra-compact mics are available in three different polar patterns (MKH 8020 Omni-directional, MKH 8040 Cardiod, and MKH 8050 Super-cardiod), and have an extensive range of useful accessories.  This system is an ideal choice for classical music recording, stage use, and broadcast/film applications.

Neumann's legendary U 87 microphone

Neumann has released a special 40th anniversary version of their legendary U 87 microphone. It features a custom PS 87 pop screen and includes a unique retro-style case, certificate of authenticity, a dust cover with the 40th Anniversary logo, and white gloves for handling the polished nickel finish. According to the Neumann guys at the booth, this limited-edition microphone will only be available for 12 months.

One of the highlights of show was SSL's "Shed Of Your Dreams." Developed in conjunction with Peter Gabriel (who wrote many of his greatest hits in the shed at the bottom of his garden), the Shed can be yours for just under $250,000. The 240-square-foot Summerwood Cheyenne structure features an SSL AWS 900+ console as its centerpiece, SSL XLogic processing and converters, acoustic treatment by Auralex, Argosy studio furniture, and Henick-Lane air conditioning.

Every Shed package includes a certification visit by a factory-trained SSL engineer to check out the audio installation and provide introductory console training. So-if you are in the market for a new studio and have a quarter of million dollars burning a hole in your pocket, call this guy. By the way, the lava lamps are included!

Blue's snowflake

Blue's new Snowflake is a portable USB microphone designed for applications such as podcasting, voice-overs, and internet telephony. Its class-compliant design makes it truly plug-and-play on both Mac and PC. The Snowflake's unique design allows the mic to fold into a single compact case that also houses an included USB cable. Unfolded, the case serves as a desktop stand or a laptop clip.

For the project studio market, Blue showed their new "Joe Condenser" microphone. This high-quality cardioid microphone features Class A discrete electronics, hand tuned and tested capsules, and a classic look with an anodized finish. It includes an integrated swivel mount for easy positioning and a velvet bag for storage. The big surprise is its low cost- $499 MSRP.
