Griffin Introduces FireWave
Surround Sound For Your Mac

By Scott Manngard

Printer-Friendly Version

Until now most Mac users have been unable to easily connect to the many 5.1 surround sound speakers on the market today. The Griffin FireWave is a nifty new device that now makes this possible. With 5.1 surround sound, you'll experience music and Dolby Digital-encoded DVDs like never before. In addition, FireWave's support for OpenAL (the cross-platform 3D audio standard), games like World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament become even more immersive and realistic.

FireWave is not an amplifier and only supplies line level output. It is designed to be connected to self-powered multichannel speakers or to an amplifier/receiver with discrete inputs routing any configuration of up to six discrete audio channels. FireWave outputs six channel audio through three 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mini-jacks: Left/Right, Center/Subwoofer and Right Surround/Left Surround.

FireWave's small size makes it easy to incorporate into any computer setup, and portable enough even for laptops. And speaking of laptops, FireWave gets its power through its FireWire connection; there are no separate cables or power supplies to carry. FireWave even features an extra FireWire 400 port so you can daisy chain other devices through it. FireWave supports Intel and PowerPC-based Macs. Mac OS X v10.4 or later is required.
