Just Announced: Three New Cameras for the Canon PowerShot Lineup

Share

Canon wants to make sure there is a compact camera for everyone with the release of three new PowerShots that expand the professional-oriented G-series, update the SX-line with their high-powered zoom lenses, and improve on the exceptionally well-connected N-series.

Leading this pack of new cameras is clearly the PowerShot G7 X, which incorporates a new 1”-size 20.2-megapixel sensor and a 4.2x optical zoom lens with a notable f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture range. There is also the PowerShot SX60 HS which has an extremely versatile and far reaching 65x optical zoom lens as well as an external mic input for video. And the super compact PowerShot N2 becomes just the second camera of the series with an updated 16.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and a “selfie-ready” multi-angle touchscreen LCD.

PowerShot G7 X Digital Camera

Sliding into a new spot in the G-series lineup is the PowerShot G7 X Digital Camera with its 20.2-megapixel 1”-size High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor. It also has a bright lens design with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-100mm. And, of course, it uses the latest DIGIC 6 processor from Canon to create their signature HS SYSTEM for improved image quality and faster operation. The camera also features expanded Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC and can record RAW 12-bit images.

With the use of a 1” sensor, the G7 X will be able to handle low-light shooting at up to ISO 12800 and it allows Canon to create a much more compact alternative to the flagship G1 X Mark II released earlier this year. Add to that the 4.2x Optical Zoom lens with a 9-blade diaphragm and you will be able to capture images with smooth out-of-focus areas. The lens also utilizes optical Intelligent Image Stabilization with eight separate modes for optimization to the user’s current needs. The G7 X is even able to squeeze in a High-Speed AF system with 31 points for locking focus as fast as 0.14 seconds which pairs nicely with the buffer-free 6.5 fps continuous shooting speed.

Handling is a priority with this series as shown by the inclusion of a control ring, exposure compensation dial, and mode dial on the body of the camera for more intuitive manual adjustments. A one-touch Mobile Device Connect Button is also featured for quickly accessing wireless connection setting. There is even an ND filter built into the camera for greater exposure control, which permits the use of longer shutter speeds or wider aperture settings. The rear LCD will also play a major role for shooters with its 3.0” 1,040k-dot resolution capacitive touchscreen. Additionally, the display can tilt upward 180° for easily taking front-facing selfies.

Video recording goes up to a fast, fluid maximum frame rate of 60 fps at full high definition 1920 x 1080p. It records to the MP4 format and files can also be saved in the Apple iFrame format for easier post-production editing control. The G7 X also features an HDMI output for playback on an HDTV and full manual control is possible during video for capturing exactly what you need.

Wi-Fi connectivity is built-in for easily pairing the camera to a compatible mobile device, allowing users to quickly edit and share their photographs online. NFC is now included in Canon’s cameras for fast touch-to-connect functionality with compatible mobile devices. It works with Canon’s CameraWindow app for image transfer and wireless control. It can even send photos directly to wireless PictBridge enabled printers.

PowerShot SX60 HS Digital Camera

Once again Canon has dramatically extended the furthest reach of its point-and-shoots with the 65x optical zoom lens fitted to the PowerShot SX60 HS Digital Camera. With an additional 15x zoom magnification over the SX50’s then-incredible 50x lens, the SX60 is poised to take the top spot in the high-power zoom lineup. Other important improvements also found their way into this model, including the combination of a 16.1-megapixel High-Sensitivity 1/2.3" CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 6 image processor to create the high performing Canon HS SYSTEM, which realizes minimal image noise and sensitivity to ISO 3200. It is also the first of the PowerShots to feature a dedicated external microphone input for improved audio recording during video.

Beginning with the lens, it is meant to provide a compact option with an enhanced grip for those who constantly find themselves in need of just a little more reach but also want a versatile all-around camera. It has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 21-1365mm for working with tight close-ups and wide angles. This range is benefitted by the inclusion of an optical Intelligent IS system that automatically determines which of its eight modes is best suited for the current settings. For video, the lens has an Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) that allow for near silent focusing and zooming during recording.

Working at extreme telephoto focal lengths is assisted with the inclusion of a Zoom Framing Assist mode that will track your subjects and automatically zoom in or out to help ensure it remains in the frame. The SX60 also gets a nice speed boost from the DIGIC 6 processor with a High Speed AF system and buffer-free continuous shooting at 6.4 fps. Additionally, the camera has a built-in flash and hot shoe for lighting setups.

The SX60 provides users with two options for composing and viewing images, either a rear LCD display or an electronic viewfinder. Both feature 922k-dot resolutions for detailed imagery and the vari-angle LCD receives a size increase over is predecessor from 2.8” to 3.0”. Also, as seems to be the current trend, Canon has included a Mobile Device Connect Button as well as NFC for fast Wi-Fi connection for remote shooting and image transfer.

PowerShot N2 Digital Camera

Available in white and black, the PowerShot N2 Digital Camera will fit in with your style, and probably your pocket, thanks to a super compact design. This upgrade makes improvements while still retaining what made the original so unique, namely its dual ring control system and a symmetrical form factor for taking photos with the camera at nearly any angle. Also, it has a multi-angle 2.8” 461k-dot touchscreen LCD that functions with the new Self Portrait mode so that you are always ready for your close-up.

Of course, in order to truly be useful for everyday sharing the N2 features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC. This camera also has a dedicated Mobile Device Connect Button that lets you quickly and easily pair your devices for immediate transfer and simplified sharing. It can even connect to a Wi-Fi-enabled computer and let you shoot remotely from a smartphone or tablet.

Stuffed into the super small body are a 16.1-megapixel High-Sensitivity 1/2.3" CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 6 image processor for the Canon HS SYSTEM, providing excellent low-light performance to ISO 3200. Also, the front of the N2 has an 8x Optical Zoom lens, similar to its predecessor with a 28-224mm equivalent focal length range in 35mm format. Intelligent IS with eight modes is also included in this model for shake-free images.

Full HD video in 1080p/30 is available for more options when capturing images and a Creative Shot mode is available for stylizing your images directly in-camera. Another advanced function is a unique movie shooting feature that will edit together slow & quick-motion video with a variety of filters to create a complete movie. These options ensure that the images you share from the PowerShot N2 will be unique for showing off to all of your friends.
