FUJIFILM XF 400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS Reviews
Sharp, Light, and Fast
Coming from a third-party super telephoto zoom, it is obvious that a first-party prime is going to blow it out of the water, but it was still a shock. This lens is at least 500g lighter, a stop faster at equivalent length, far, far sharper at any aperture, and with a much higher hit rate due to its faster autofocus. Whether it's worth nearly 3x as much is a personal value question, but for me, the answer is yes. The lens gets out of my way, and I have more fun shooting birds and wildlife given that I can carry this lens all day without it feeling cumbersome and know that I'm going to get better results. I can also reduce my X-H2S's continuous shooting framerate and therefore have fewer shots to weed through given that I know I'll have more images properly in focus. I save space on my card and a headache in post. The only gripe I have with it is that I wish it emulated my third-party lens' tripod collar implementation, which with the turn of a screw could be loosened to shift its orientation or removed entirely. This lens has a foot that can be removed, but only from a mounting point that is blocky and gets in the way and can never be removed from the lens barrel, only shifted elsewhere.
SHARP
So far so good! I have this alongside the 200 F2 and it’s a great companion. It’s half the weight, smaller footprint and just as sharp at the 200. I haven’t given a try with the 1.4TC yet but I imagine it’ll be just as sharp with it. The focus is fast, lens is well balanced, stabilizes very well and is just awesome. Do I wish it was faster aperture? Of course. I would love this in a 2.8 or 3.2! But, it’s a 600mm 4.5 FF equivalent, so I can’t complain too much. It’s a keeper for sure!
