Canon has announced its latest entry to the 13 x 19-inch desktop printer competition, the Canon PIXMA PRO-1. Sporting a 12-color Lucia pigmented ink system, Canon’s new printer is designed to deliver vivid museum-quality prints in color or black and white.
The new printer, which is targeted toward working professionals and serious amateurs, is being introduced as a companion printer to Canon’s current PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II and PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II inkjet printers.
Among the improvements and advancements found on the new printer is a new 12,228 nozzle print head (the PIXMA Pro9000 MK II and Pro9500 MK II contain 7680 nozzles) and a 12-color Lucia ink system: Matte Black, Photo Black, Dark Gray, Gray, Light Gray, Cyan, Photo Cyan, Magenta, Photo Magenta, Yellow, Red and a Chroma Optimizer that allows for smoother gray-tone transitions, a wider color gamut and greatly minimized bronzing and metamerism when printing on glossy paper stocks. According to Canon, print speeds on the new PIXMA PRO-1 are as fast as 4 minutes, 20 seconds for a 13 x 19-inch print. For intimate details, the print head can place ink droplets as small as 4 picoliters onto the media surface at 4800 x 2400 dpi.
The ink cartridges, which are arranged in two groups of six on either side of the print chassis, are 150% larger (36 ml) than the ink tanks found on the PIXMA Pro9000 Mk II and Pro9500 Mk II (14 ml), allowing longer printing sessions before one has to replace the individual cartridges, which in the past occurred invariably too soon and usually at inconvenient times.
The PIXMA PRO-1 features dual paper paths; a standard rear path that can handle up to twenty 300 gsm sheets of photo paper and a manual feed slot that can handle fine art papers up to 350 gsm. To better ensure finer, consistent print quality, the PIXMA PRO-1 uses a linear default print setting that delivers a color palette that is more neutral than the default Photo Color setting used on the Pro9000 Mk II and Pro 9500 MK II. Additionally, custom ICC profiles for Ilford, Moab and Hahnemühle fine art papers can be downloaded free of charge from each of these paper manufacturers, for use with the new printer.
Canon’s PIXMA PRO-1 features Ethernet 10/100, USB 2.0 and PictBridge connectivity, and owners of the new printer can make use of free tech support from Canon’s Virginia-based professional support team, 24/7, for a year’s time (the same folks who support Canon’s professional DSLR and lens systems). And if your printer is deemed mechanically flawed, Canon will swap your old printer for a new one free of charge for up to a year after the original purchase date.
