A sports-action cam is useless if it’s not as hearty as you are. In order to capture breathtaking footage in any environment, you need a camera that’s up to the task of going wherever you go, regardless of whether it’s a cold summit, a hot, dusty desert, raging river rapids or underwater. And, you need a camera that can shoot high-definition video and still images.
GoPro’s new HD HERO2 is as ready to go as you are. Building on the success of earlier HERO cameras, the new HD HERO2 is more powerful and easier to use. It has a new, more intuitive interface, and LED lights on all sides can be seen from any angle. It has also been furnished with a 3.5mm stereo microphone input and a mini-HDMI output port. The f/2.8 fixed focus glass lens is now twice as sharp and the image processor is twice as fast. An integrated battery warmer extends battery life in cold temperatures, and the camera now supports SD cards up to 32GB in capacity. Natural and High Wind Audio Modes have been added as well.
The HD HERO2 houses a new 11MP, 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor, allowing it to capture 11MP, 8MP and 5MP stills. New still modes include wide angle with a 170-degree field of view and medium angle with a 127-degree field of view. A new burst mode shoots 10 images in one second and a time-lapse mode can be set to capture an image every 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds. Natural and High Wind Audio Modes cut down on wind noise in your audio, and the camera is compatible with GoPro’s Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote, accessories that permit Wi-Fi video preview and playback on smart phones, tablets and computers; long-range remote control of multiple cameras; and live streaming to the Web.
The HD HERO2 can shoot 1080p HD video (1920 x 1080/16:9) with 170-, 127-, and 90-degree fields of view, all at 30 fps. It can also shoot 960p video (1280 x 960/4:3) with a 170-degree field of view at 30 or 48 frames per second. It can also shoot 720p video (1280 x 720/16:9) with 170-, 127- and 90-degree fields of view at 30 or 60 fps. And last, it can also shoot WVGA video (848 x 480/16:9) with 170- and 127-degree fields of view at 60 or 120 frames per second. Note that some of these modes are non-functional until a future firmware update becomes available.
All HD HERO2 cameras include a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, a waterproof housing, assorted mounting hardware and a USB charging cable. Then there are special versions that include various accessories.
