Anyone can take a basic camcorder, capture an important event or family gathering and put together a reasonable, if somewhat amateurish presentation that friends and family can enjoy. But when you watch a segment on the evening news, you expect the footage to look professional. Built for broadcast applications, JVC’s new GY-HM150 ProHD is a compact handheld camcorder with numerous HD and SD recording options and a fast shoot-to-edit workflow.
Based on the popular GY-HM100, the GY-HM150 is built to withstand the rigors of news and production environments. Three ¼-inch progressive scan CCDs (one each for red, green and blue) provide rich, accurate color reproduction, and a precision Fujinon glass prism is used to separate the primary colors. The three CCD imagers allow full HD 1080p, 1080i and 720p recording at various frame and bit rates. JVC’s native file recording technology generates native .MOV files that work well with Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, as well as native .MP4 files that work well with other NLE systems. The camcorder can also record SD footage (480i) as standard DV files (.AVI or .MOV).
Those glorious image sensors see a crystal-clear world through the GY-HM150U’s 3.7–37mm high definition Fujinon lens with 10x optical zoom. A flip-in lens cover eliminates the need for an external cap and also prevents loss of the cap. Audio is captured via an included shotgun mic, and better sound can be captured by plugging add-on mics into the camcorder’s two XLR audio inputs with phantom power. There are also manual audio level controls with an audio meter.
As good as the lens and microphone are, a news brief would be pointless if the cameraman failed to capture the first few seconds of an interview. Fortunately, the GY-HM150 records continuously when turned on, always buffering up to five seconds of footage in cache memory. That way you’ll never miss the beginning of an interview or the explosion that started the fire, even if you were too slow to start filming. A new Clip Cutter feature lets you trim away, right inside the camera, any unwanted footage from the beginning or end of a clip.
Manual controls are improved, with manual focus augmenting the automatic function. Exposure can also be set automatically or manually, as can the depth of focus simply by having the camera person select the appropriate f-stop, which is displayed in the viewfinder. A macro mode lets you capture subjects as close as two inches. Handshake is eliminated by way of JVC's newly developed Rotary Optical Image Stabilizer (ROIS), which corrects for lateral and vertical movement of the camera with no degradation of image quality.
The GY-HM150 features a 2.7-inch, 230,000 pixel widescreen LCD and an upgraded electronic viewfinder (EVF). It also sports dual SDHC/SDXC card slots. You can record to both cards simultaneously to create an instant backup copy or a copy for a client. You can also have the camcorder switch to the second card once the first card fills up so as to not miss a shot. You can also edit and manipulate footage on one card while still capturing footage on the other.
Small in size and lightweight for an ENG camera, the GY-HM150 is 14-4/8" long by 7-1/8" high by 5-1/2" wide and it weighs just 3.1 pounds with the battery and microphone attached. For more streamlined recording, the camcorder’s handle can be removed.
