Shure and a Look at the Legacy of the SM58
03/06/2017In this B&H YouTube video, Sonic Scoop’s Justin Colletti goes on location at Shure headquarters, in Niles, Illinois, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic SM58 microphone with Matt Engstrom, Shure’s senior director of wired microphones. They discuss the legacy of this ubiquitous product, despite an initial lack of popularity that nearly led to its cancellation from the Shure catalog, in 1970. Initially produced as a studio mic targeted to TV broadcasting, Engstrom describes how its popularity was buoyed due to its impressive shockmount and low handling noise when swung around on stage by rock musicians. After watching, you’ll come away with a new appreciation for the SM58’s many attributes, as well as its integral role in the development of much of today’s pro audio gear. We hope you enjoy the video, and invite you to view the wide selection of other instructional and informative videos at BandH.com.
