Fans and Louvers
Proper ventilation is essential in a darkroom. Air conditioning is a wonderful alternative but is a luxury for most people. Chemicals, especially hypo (fixer), give off strong odors that can be disturbing. The complete darkroom will have, at least, a fan and a louver to promote circulation. A fan, although not a cooling unit, agitates the air while a louver, which should lead to an outside venue, provides the bad air with a path out of the room. /www.bhphotovideo.com/bh3.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=ProductActivator__Aproductlist_html___15672___DELFLT1212___REG___CatID=539___SID=F1400677720> Louvers are nothing more than light tight cutouts that mount in the wall. Darkroom fans should run quietly.
It is important to remember that if the fan is going to stick out of a window, the casing must be weather resistant. There are fans that are only rated for room-to-room use. /www.bhphotovideo.com/bh3.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=ProductActivator__Aproductlist_html___106011___PRFDRA1212___REG___CatID=539___SID=F1400677720>
The size of the fan and louver are determined by the size of the room. Your local photo store will help you determine the appropriate size for both. Be sure to have the dimensions of your darkroom available.
