The GT1542 Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT1542 has a load capacity of 39.7 lb, extends to a maximum height of 62.6", and folds down to 21.3" for transport.
The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

The tripod is strong. Three of the barrels for opening and closing legs were so tight, that a strong man had trouble opening them. He suggested I use 3 in 1 oil. I have it opened at the right length and do not change it. It needs some work.
Great! Lightweight!

Carefully looked at all the competitors in this size. Worth the extra money. Very sturdy for it's size.

Is the GT1542 heavy enough to accommodate the Wimberley WH-200 Gimbel?
It would work, but probably feel more grounded and stable if the WH-200 were used with a slightly heavier and stiffer tripod. Depending on your needs, a series 2, 3, or 4 tripod might be slightly better, but the excellent weight-height-stiffness ratio of the Mountaineer GT1542 does make it appealing.

Can the feet be replaced with the Gitzo Bigfoot ...
Can the feet be replaced with the Gitzo Bigfoot feet? If they can, how do you remove the feet?
The feet on the 4-section 1-series cannot be changed. They're permanently glued on. Same applies to the "0" series Mountaineers. On models with thicker bottom leg sections, such as the 1-series 3-section legs, or all of the 2 and 3-series Mountaineers, you can change the feet. (spikes etc)

Will this tripod be stable with a 100-400 lens on my Canon DSLR? I'm worried about the very skinny
legs. Thank you!
Yes, the Gitzo GT1542 Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod is a very strong and stable tripod. It will hold a Canon DSLR and a 100-400mm lens. It requires a tripod head purchased separately though.
