The B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.
A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.
Kaesemann-type filters feature greater optical efficiency than regular polarizing foils and are more neutral in color. The polarizing foils are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass layers, which are then precision-polished to achieve the most accurate plano-parallel surface. This edge sealing protects the filter layers from humidity and are ideal for use with high-speed telephoto and apochromatic lenses.
The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.
B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

I have both this polarizer, and the Hoya Pro 1 Digital for wide angle lenses, and other B&W polarizers (non Kaesemann). With my EF-S 17-55mm and Canon 50D, I could see no vignetting, even at wide angle and f/2.8, so getting the wide angle version is not needed in my case. This way, I can put a regular lens cap on the polarizer. The colors seem more accurate than my Hoya polarizer. The ring is heavier and harder to rotate, but it seems more sturdy. After time though, some of my B&W polarizers become "sticky" and harder to rotate smoothly. The coating is superior to Hoya, there are clearly less reflections. Also, the back of the filter is much easier to clean (seems to smudge on the Hoya). The coating seems to be more resistant to scratches as well. It is also sealed for better durability from the environment (good for travel). The only downside is that the filter is harder to rotate (for example with a lens shade on, with the Hoya it's easy to do with one finger). Another important factor is that the filter stops clearly less light than Hoya, which is good (for example shutter speed of 1/320 or 1/400 vs. 1/500 with Hoya at same ISO and aperture). Overall, looking at top-of-the line polarizers, this one is clearly the best.

Excellent glass and filtration (as it should be for a top-tier product and brand name B+W. But there's a big catch in terms of mounting threads... notorious for "locking up" once screwed on, especially when screwed into B+W's setup ring (anodized aluminum). Large front section of P-filter spins as is required for polarizing-angle use; behind that is a very tiny gripping area ring... that too-often refuses to unscrew. B+W claims they've never heard of the issue. Unscrewing it in the field under difficult circumstances is near impossible, even indoors. Do consider buying filter-wrenches. Oddly, B+W doesn't make any, nor provide them with a polarizer. In summary: great glass. Poor mount.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:
Before I purchased this filter, I researched different brands such as B+W and Hoya. After reading many reviews, I was sold to B+W. Sure, it is more in the expensive side but it is worth every penny. Quality is delievered in this product.
The rotation ring was very smooth and I didn't noticed any lose in sharpness. It just makes my photos pop out.
I don't have any negative things to say about this product.

The mounting threads is not easy to lock up when I screwed it on and I have to make a same direction turen to find a good postion to take a picture, otherwise, it could lose the filter ring.
The glass quality is excellent.

I spend a lot of time on the water. This filter makes the colors cleaner and protects the expensive glass behind it.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:
The circular polarizer MRC filter by B&W provides excellent control and color enhancement. The Kaesemann feature allows for very detailed polarizer effects. I have chosen the 77 mm size for use with my main lenses (24-105 f4L canon and 17-55 f2.8 EFS)and I have step down rings for use on smaller lens sizes. A filter wrench is an essential tool as filters do tend to stick occasionally.
In fact, this filter is so good, I have been leaving it on my 24-105 f4L almost all the time now.
The only downside, of course, is the cost - but just like all "good glass" you get what you pay for.

When I received my polarizar I hit to the Rain Forest to test it. The blues and greens are more vivid, the 2 stops down were a most for shooting the water falls and also helps in eliminating the water reflections.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:
This is not the best circ polarizer on the market, but a good midrange one. It gives great depth of color to scenes and cuts glare beautifully. I recently went to Samoa and without this polarizer my photos wouldnt have been half as good. I used it in many situations, on beaches of course, and in jungles too. It really gave a nice deep feel to my shots. No color cast to speak of. Beautiful, great value for a midrange circ pol.
Only two shortfalls, as it has a thinish mount my lens cap didnt stay on 100% of the time. Too at very wide angle focal lengths there was some vignetteing.

Beautiful image quality for water shots
Just returned from Carribean where the filter produced some very clean, tack sharp photos
Combined with 1-stop ND filter for great sunset photos over the water
B+W has the best, period.

B+W is a reputable brand, and the quality is superb. I live on the coast, and the salt air and moisture make the Kaeseman a necessity.

I only have it 3 stars as when I screwed this filter onto my UV filter, I could not get them apart. This was mentioned in other reviews and took me 2 hours to get it unscrewed. Lesson learned: Do not attempt to screw this on to another filter (ie UV filter), remember to take off any filters and screw this one on instead.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:
I use the B+W filters for both protective and special effects, adding depth and dimension to my photographs. I have tried other filters and although you do pay a premium for B+W's they are without question the best filters available. I had used B+W for years, on occasion I have tried others brands but always ended up returning to B+W's. The only drawback with B+W's I can find is the price. The new XS slim filters have reduced the weight that some people spoke of because B+W uses brass rings on the filters (they weight more). I just purchased a 77mm Kaeseman for a mountain climb to 14,000ft, I took the sealed option because I don't want to worry about my lens (water, condensation and dust), the B+W makes sure of that.

I have not had a chance to test this product extensively. In my limited testing, it polarized as expected without any loss of details. My previous cheap polarizer made pictures look soft. This polarizer is a large upgrade.

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:
I do a lot of marine photography of sailboat regattas from the fly bridge of power boats. I do not often have a choice of shooting at optimum sun angle. That means my shots can be right into the sun, at right angles or with the sun behind me. The only way I can obtain color that closely resembles the human eye is with this filter. The results are truly remarkable. Also I shoot a lot of panoramic landscapes with similar spectacular results when using this amazing filter. Very smooth rotation with just my index finger.
