Canon Circular Polarizer - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.
If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.
If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.
Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.
Note! Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems)

This is a good quality polarizing filter. The polarizing effect is excellent, optics appear to be good, and filter rotation is smooth. Like many polarizing filters, it must be screwed in tightly or rotating the polarizing lens will loosen the filter. Actually, I have found it is easier to always turn the polarizing element in the same direction as I would to tighten the filter. Otherwise, I am happy with this filter.

The filter works as advertised; however this Canon Filter fitted to a Canon lens is incompatible with the Canon lens cap! After spending [$] for the filter I had to shell out an additional $14.00 for an aftermarket lens cap that would fit. Outrageous. The Tiffen polarizer costs less, works as well, and fits the Canon lens cap.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
The lens is fabulous when used to take picture of reflection, but the price is slightly high. And you don't get to use it with all shots just some particular ones. Which makes it less value of money:P

Well constructed and delivers good quality. Standard, Canon-supplied 77mm lens cap very difficult to attach - very annoying. Would receive 5-star rating except for this inconvenience.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
I've been using a circular polarizer filter on my macro lens for a couple of years now, and recently decided to bite the bullet and purchase a second polarizer for my 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. I specifically spent one entire day using my new filter on landscape and water shots, and found it to make an amazing difference in my shots. It turned my shots from mediocre to fabulous....I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves shooting water and landscape shots!

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
scenic shooting with a Canon 1D Mark III and Canon 10D. I used this filter when shooting turtles under water. You could see the turtles under water with the filter whereas without the filter there was sun reflection glaring the photo. A con I have is the inability to use the lens cap with the filter on the lens.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
I have ALL Canon equipment, nothing generic in my camera bag. And was happy with the Canon name until I bought the (Canon) 77mm circular polarizing filter. The (Canon 17-40mmm) lens caps DOES NOT fit in a secure way. I have tried the other (Canon) lens caps with the same disappointing results. It does not hold tight and can easily be pulled off by hand.

Best to use a polarizer when you are getting a lot off reflection from water and windows. I use it a lot in the fall for the many different colors. It will cut the your light about 1-1/2 stops. I have never had a problem with that.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
This is a great filter for landscapes. I use it with my Canon 10-22 mm Ultra Wide Angle lens for absolutely breath taking landscapes. I have been taking pictures along one of our local river parkways, and the reflections in the water are absolutely amazing. This filter has made a huge improvement in my landscape photos. They are truly professional quality.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
I use it basically like other Circular Filters where you can change the shade or light rays that enter your camera lens. This is the quietest and best designed filter out there, you can just see the quality when you open it and the way it looks on your lens. Nothing negative about this product.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
I agree with the other comments that the filter works ok. But the thread on the front is too narrow to allow a standard Canon lens cap to fit properly. Pretty daft design given its Canon branded. I mean why would you not try your company's lens cap with your filter product? Im going to have to take off the filter each time now as the cap wont hold if you stick it in your bag.

Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
Very good glass, but unlike some other filters, this one is not threaded on the front so you can not put the lens cap on with the filter. Very inconvenient.
Comments about Canon 2583A002 77mm Circular Polarizing Filter:
For one of the cheaper 77mm Polarizers, I guess I couldn'texpect too much, but even with the Canon brand name, I was alittle disappointed. The filters front threads won't hold alens cap, so you can't keep the filter on and pack thecamera away. The B+W filter is just over $50 more and wellworth the extra cash.
Expertise: Professional
Problems Encountered: Lens cap doesn't fit on top of the filter. Not easy to clean smudges.
