I have used $800-1000+ fluid head Manfrotto tripods at a TV station and the production house where I now work, and had long since given up hope of ever having a decent pan/tilt head for under that price range.
Then I bought a used camcorder and the seller threw this tripod in the package. Wow! I looked it up on B&H to see how many hundreds of dollars it would cost to buy another one --seriously expecting $250+-- and was shocked to see how inexpensive it is.
Okay, now that that's clear, I should clarify that this isn't the sort of tripod that you should show up with to a TV or feature film shoot. However, for student, indy, low-budget or serious home video work, this is absolutely the best tripod out there.

This is as good a tripod as you can buy without cracking the three-digit price barrier. But its flexibility makes every pan a two-handed adventure, and since there's no adjustable spring or any way to vary the position of the camcorder on the head, it's likely to tilt forward or back on its own unless you lock down the retaining wingnuts after every move.
For video work, this is purely an entry-level piece for tiny and/or extraordinarily well-balanced camcorders. I would advise anyone doing much camera movement to buy the more expensive -- but still reasonable -- Velbon Three-way Fluid Panhead and mounting it on a steady set of legs. This won't give you as light or cheap a rig, but it will give you a lot smoother and usable one without going spending-crazy.

Comments about Velbon VMATE607F Videomate 607 Tripod with PH-368 2 Way Fluid Head:
Great tripod for video cameras. The panhead on this tripod is very smooth and consistant - very well built and implemented. I have an expensive Bogen tripod with a fluid panhead, and this panhead feels and behaves about as good as the Bogen. I needed something smaller and easier to haul around, and this one sure fits the purpose nicely. My new video camera doesn't look rediculously lost on this smaller tripod and head.
I saw tripods at Best local Buy shops that cost more than this one, and the panheads were useless friction heads, which aren't smooth, and slightly bind now and then.
Cudos to B&H for a great price on a decent tripod! I wanted a tripod that was cheap enough that I wouldn't be upset with banging it around. This was a little more than I wanted to spend for a bang around, but worth the few extra bucks for a great panhead. Actually, it would be a waste of money to get a tripod with a friction head, even if it is a lot cheaper.
It feels overall very sturdy. It might be a little heavier than a lot of tripods out there, but for less weight you have to spend a lot more money.

This is a great cheap tripod. It is not a top of the line model, but you sure do get "Bang for your Buck". It has a fairly good strength to weight ratio, and is also pretty stiff for how cheap it is. If you are looking for a good cheap tripod, then I recommend this one.

I have been using the same tripod for several years and I love it. It is light weight and yet very easy to control for my handy-cam Cameras. I already have 2 and just bought another one from B&H. This tripod is solid for the light waight Cameras. Nice fluid head and you can't beat the price specially when buying from B&H.

Used the tripod with Canon Vixia HF200 and Canon DM-100 microphone to film theatrical production. It held this weight very well, the panning and tilting were very smooth. My previous tripod was Manfrotto 785B, not really designed for video, and Velbon is a big difference indeed. It's light enough to carry around. The "footprint" is quite wide, though, hard to fit in the narrow spaces, like in-between the theater rows. The center shaft goes down easily, better tighten it securely before putting on weight.

This tripod is a good tripod for consumer type cams. Using it with a prosumer can would not really be a good fit.
The "fluid" in the fluid head is grease or a grease like substance. I found when shooting here in Minnesota in the cold (even in hockey rinks) the "fluid" tends to thicken increasing the drag.
I do like it very much, for the $ it is way better than the smaller, skimpy leg tripods you find for just a few bucks less.

Comments about Velbon VMATE607F Videomate 607 Tripod with PH-368 2 Way Fluid Head:
I bought this to serve as an inexpensive lightweight travel tripod for recording DSLR video. So far, I'm mostly pleased. It is lightweight, but stability is reasonably good with the column down. With the column up, it isn't so good. The height is nice though so it might be useful for some static shots where no one is walking on the floor nearby. The head seems to be rather smooth for the price. I use a thick rubber band to start pans in order to avoid small jerks that it seems prone to.
My biggest disappointment is that the head is not detachable from the legs. As the head is also sold separately, I had thought that it would be, but this isn't the case. This makes packing it more complicated, which is a problem for a travel tripod. Were I to do it again, I might by the head and a compatible set of legs separately.

I have this same pod with a Sony name on it, and only got the Sony because it had a LANC connection for camera control on the pan/tilt handle. Otherwise it's the same pod. I do corporate video that I shoot on location and at trade shows. Lots of interviews, equipment shots, and b-roll. 90% of it on this tripod.
For an inexpensive tool it's been remarkably sturdy and durable. The legs loosened up tad at the top but it doesn't seem to affect it much. The head gives a smooth pan but you do have to remember to tighten the center post or you'll have some unwanted motion when stopping or starting the pan.
The T-handle screws for the head are a bit fragile, so you need to be careful of those during transport. The plastic wings break off. And the bubble level gets loose and can get lost. The nut that holds the pan/tilt arm on won't stay tight, but some Loctite Blue adds some friction and helps with that.
My next one will be a Davis & Sanford for some extra height and a heavier cam (Canon XF300), but this will remain for the small Sony A1U I've been using.

About 6 months ago, I decided to begin being serious about video. All I knew before was handling a handycam so it's not like I'm a professional or anything. This review is based on this first tripod buying experience. At that time, I thought that [$] was a lot to put on a tripod. I wanted something good and the reviews here made me buy the thing. The truth is that this tripod does not do the job.First thing you notice right out of the box, the thing is flimsy. Everywhere the pieces join together, there's a cheap plastic clip or piece that's feels like it could break anytime. The pan and tilt would work great, if it was not once again be of the cheap build. Sure, the pans are smooth, and if you use the elastic trick it works pretty fine. But as soon as you pick the handle, and you see the head base and tripod head mount wobble, you know your shot will not be as smooth as you thought it would be.If you put your camera on it and put a little weight, the legs will pry, or something else will break. My handle began having problems 1 month after I got it. It became loose and I could not tight it enough to stay in place. I had to put on another nut. The plastic became loose and it's broken. One positive thing, it is really light, so it's easy to lug around pretty anywhere. But the weight causes my timelapses to wobble a lot and I have to stabilize it in After Effects because a light wind is strong enough to make this tripod wobble.6 months now and I just got a Davis & Sanford Provista tripod and FM18 head. This thing is really solid. If you want to get serious, save your money and get something more solid than this.

While the movement is fluid, the whole tripod is so light it's not fluid enough. I tried it out in-store, but with the camera it just wasn't strong enough. I returned it.

We use the tripod with a video camera to tape our church services for Stay at home members. The Tripod is very steady and the head movement is smooth. The quick release is very useful.
The only down is that the foot print is so large we cannot move it close to the barrier we are behind.

I do a lot of horse show and riding lesson videos as well as some amateur shorts and documentaries. Getting good coverage of a moving horse and rider can be a bit challenging. This is a new purchase for me and I've only used the equipment a few times but I'm amazed at how smooth it is. This tripod has definitely improved the overall quality of my videos.
