The Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter enables the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2 or 3 stops to suit individual situations.
Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. This filter enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed in the picture.
Determining which graduated neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Choose the filter strength which adjusts the lighting to stay within the exposure latitude (greatest difference between bright/dark values) which still shows details in both of the digital or film medium in use.
Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6 - the filter's clear portion allows 4x more light to pass vs. darkest portion) effectively compensates average bright sky-to-foreground situations, and the soft transition is applicable more often to a scene than the hard transition

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
Singh-Ray filters always get high reviews, and now I know why. I hesitated before I bought this because of the high price tag. I finally decided to pull the trigger, and I am glad I did. This filter is incredible! It does an excellent job balancing the high dynamic range that my digital camera could not otherwise capture. Take care with these resin filters as they scratch rather easily. As long as you do that, you won't be disappointed with the neutral density and optical clarity of these filters.

I had never used this type of filter before, so on a trip to Death valley gave it a try and what a difference it made with my pictures. Very good quality maybe just a bit pricey however.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
I have struggled with many of my landscape photos because of bright skies versus the dark foreground. This is especially true with sunsets at the beach etc. With a 3 stop ND, I am able to work with the sky and the beach. It helps me to not loose the beautiful detail of the clouds as well as the setting sun. A great purchase.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
This is definetly 1 of the 2 best accessories I ever bought for my camera (the other one being the 3-stop ND Grad) It gives a great amount of detail to your photos on days when the sky is bright. In the land of the midnight sun, this is really a MUST for any landscape/waterscape photography. Next thing to buy will be the "hard ND grads". :)
You won't regret buying this item.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
I purchased the 2-Stop and 3-Stop filters based upon a pro photographers recommendation and I couldn't be happier. I never knew these existed and I can't believe the difference they have made in landscape photographs where there background it brighter than the foreground. Also...they work resonably well as reverse graduated ND filters if you flip them upside down!

Galen Rowell and Singh-Ray are both names that inspire respect. You expect quality and that is what you get. When used to control a wide exposure range you get a very natural result with no horid colour artifacts. They are made of great quality material.

Comments about Singh-Ray Cokin P Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 3-Stop Filter:
This is the first ND filter I purchased for my DSLR. I used it specifically to help with sunset/sunrise pictures, where I had a high contrast difference within different portions of my image. This product has worked great for these purposes. There is no perceptible distortion of the image, and I am getting great shots. The flexibility of the holder to fine tune the placement of the ND section is key.
