Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Canon ET-83C Lens Hood:
Living without it? Well no. Recently while on a photo shoot in another city I was doing some inside work that was not conducive to using the lens hood. Later when back home I was not able to find it. The chances of getting it back were nil.[...].Upon receiving the new hood, Murphy's Law kicked in and I found it in the bottom of my lens case!Send it back. No. I decided to keep it as a backup so that I would never be without it again!
