The Canon EF 2x II Extender is a high-quality teleconverter that preserves the image quality of the lens it's mounted to and multiplies its focal length by 2x. When combined with pro level EOS cameras & EF supertelephoto lenses with image stabilization, near imperviousness to weather extremes is achieved thanks to rubber gasket seals. Improved antireflective internal coatings also increase transmissivity & performance in backlit conditions.
The 2x extender (also known as a teleconverter) will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 2x, and will cut back the amount of light by 2 f/stops. For example, using a 2x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 600mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/5.6. Teleconverters are best used with longer telephoto lenses and are not recommended for lenses wider than 50mm, e.g. 28-105mm (35mm format).
Note: This teleconverter will only fit and work with a select list of lenses. Please click here for a compatibility chart of all compatible lenses.
Note: Autofocus is possible with any EOS body if the lens has an f/2.8 or faster maximum aperture, and compatible Image Stabilization lenses maintain the IS feature when used with any current EOS camera.

I bought this extender to give extra reach to a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L lens. I knew I was going to sacrifice some sharpness, but there are times when I wish I had extra zoom for some far off subject, and I knew that decent optical amplification would outclass digital resizing.
Upon using it, I am surprised how little sharpness is given up. Real life results are very satisfying. I use it on a EOS 40D. At full zoom on the 100-400mm (an equivalent of 800mm full frame), the widest aperture is f/11 and the autofocus does not function at any zoom length. I use the Canon Angle Finder C to help with manual focusing.
So compared to a dedicated (and much more expensive) long range telephoto, I give up some light, autofocus, and a little sharpness. This is fine by me. I only mount it when the situation demands that extra reach, so it doesn't get a lot of use but I am always glad to have it around.
I also use the 1.4x II extender - this has less range, but better results optically. Having both gives you a good degree of flexibility.
In short, the extender enhances the use of any compatible Canon lens. I am very happy with it.

used on my 70-200 2.8 L 400mm seemed too good to be true....and it was.Don't get me wrong the instant 400mm focal range was great, but it lacked in many areas too. At 400 sports action shots were not sharp, even at 5.6 (which is as fast as it can go). Auto focus was diminished. Any object that got into frame in the foreground would through autofocus off even if your auto focus point was locked on something else. I experienced this in all of my aoutofocus modes on my 30d. At the end of the day I got some really great shots for the papers, but I had to take way more frames than I would with a true 400mm lens. On the positive side though, I did capture some great images at focal lengths not attainable without the extender, so for that it was worht it. If you have the time and like lots of extra editing then this product will do well for you. If you can afford to get the real glass....do it!!The extrender should not be used regularly in my opinion, but only when you absolutly need it and have no other option. Hope this helps. Happy shooting!

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):
I've used this on my canon 70-200 mm f2.8 lens, Though I have only had the lens for a week, the 2 times I have used it so far have been successful. [I shot 2 baseball games [early and mid afternoon, so lighting was not an issue]
The extra zoom was awesome and Surprisingly to me it add virtually no weight [I don't even notice it].
I would like to test it in low light to see how it alters the lens in that situation.
Speed was still quick even with the extender on, but like I said earlier I haven't used it in low light.
images have turned out great.

I purchased this to attach to my 70-200 lens, to extend the "reach" I haven't really had a chance since I have received it to put it to any real test.

I use this with my 70-200 Canon lens and have found it doesn't interfere with the IS. Mounted on a tripod the entire setup - lens and extender - render tack sharp images. Handheld, the sharpness is still very acceptable.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):
I purchased this lens to extend the reach of my 70-200 f2.8L IS, primarily for youth sports. Focus is slower than the 70-200, however I expected this, as well as the compromise in lower light situations. What was unexpected was the inferior sharpness. When working from a tripod (clearly not a viable solution for shooting football) the images are very soft, even when shooting stationary objects. The result is to take an exceptional lens and to render the image quality essentially unusable.

This is a great tool to get more from your Canon lenses. The image quality is very good and it's easy to use. It is super for nature work due to the light weight compared to bringing along another bigger lense.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):
Debated whether to buy this to complement my 70-200 F2.8 IS and decided to pull the trigger before it was sold out. Performance is great and loss of F stop is as stated. Definitely worth the purchase as it's like having a larger lense for much less money (and weight!). This is a big deal for me as I drag my gear on hikes, etc. Focus is somewhat degraded as vibration is tough to eliminate at nearly 500mm with my 7d - even with IS.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):
I previously used the 1.4x Canon Extender primarily because the 2x Extender was too soft with some edge distortion. FINALLY I'm able to use the 2x. Perhaps only the most discerning of eyes will notice, but I for one see a marked improvement. I use with my 70-200L f2.8 and it's wonderful. I highly recommend the upgrade from previous model.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):
The good news: I'm using the EF 2x II with a EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM II, which is as sharp a lens as it gets. Image quality is quite good: you just loose a little bit of sharpness and you get chromatic aberration, but nothing to be worried about. Construction is excellent and up to the standards of L-series lenses. All-in-all, it was a great and cheap way to get a 140-400 f/5.6 out of my 70-200 f/2.8 (by the way, Image Stabilization still works).
The bad news: auto-focus is way slower, increasing from a few tenths of a seconds for the bare 70-200 to a second or more with the extender.
My main interest is sports photography, mainly soccer, where action is usually unpredictable (just like in football). This means you definitely need fast auto-focus. The two stops of aperture you loose may also hurt in this application.
However, I didn't buy the EF 2X for sports, but for wildlife, because I needed a longer reach and I was on a budget. Sure, catching a flying eagle is quite difficult, yet with more static subjects (like a roe, a bear, etc.) results may be quite good.
The bottom line: if your main interest is sports or your lens is not very good, just don't buy the EF 2X. On the other hand, if lightning fast autofocus is not your priority and you own an excellent 70-200, the EF 2X is the cheapest way to "buy" a 400 mm.

Works great at doubling the zoom range, there is a compatibility list for lenses, mostly canon lenses works with it but check first. It works great on my Canon 70-200mm 2.8, combined with it it turns it into a 140-400mm 5.6 lens. Makes it convenient not to have to carry 2 giant lenses in one bag.

I'm using this on a 70-200 to increase reach, primarily for youth outdoor sports. its pretty easy to use. You need to get used to focusing manually quickly and need to use it with a tripod to get clean shots so in that regards, its not ideal for sports. I have not yet tried with a monopod. When you get a clean focus, the extra 200m is great and since I'm shooting outdoors i don't mind shooting at f/8.

Comments about Canon 2x EF Extender II (Teleconverter):
I have been looking at purchasing this item for a long time for use with my f2.8 70-200 mm "L" image stabilized lens. To me, this accessory seems almost designed solely for use with the 70-200. I plan to use it for nature photography and to take pictures at my daughter's soccer games. I received it a few days ago and have taken a number of pictures (but as soccer season is over that part of the assessment will have to wait until fall!) In any case, it performs as advertised. Focus is a bit slower than with the bare lens and max aperture is lowered as expected. In other words, this lens does NOT suddenly make your $1300 lens into the equivalent of a $5000 lens, of course. If you keep these limitations in mind, this powerful tool is quite useful. Other considerations: The "mark III" model of this has come out - for about double the cost. I suspect this item will be discontinued / out of stock quite soon, so if you want it you may want to act relatively quickly. Be absolutely certain you know your lens(es) are compatible with this device - specs are pretty clear, but most of the negative reviews are regarding compatibility issues. Don't expect the same tack-sharp images you have been spoiled with using the bare lens as image quality is quite good but not excellent. All in all, this is a very useful (and fairly cost effective) addition to my kit.
