Circular Polarizer - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.
NOTE: Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems).

What can you say about a filter? It's expensive and it does the job.I was originally just going to buy a UV filter to protect the lens. I would rather sacrifice a [$] filter than a $1,500 lens, who wouldn't?Anyhoo, this filter is very well built and the polarizing function is flawless.Very useful photographing buildings with reflections or any body of water. Not really necessary photographing birds.

The good thing, it works well as a polarizer. The construction is terrible. I have had two of these and both have fallen apart in a similar fashion. The ring falls off and the spring inside falls out. I reviewed other size Hoya polarizing filters and similar complaints crop up. I also looked at the reviews of other manufacturers{Tiffen, NIkon, B+W) and there were also some complaints like the lens had problems with screwing it in but did not see any where the polarizer fell apart. This review is not a scientific one but from the complaints about the polarizer falling apart is a common complaint in the reviews of Hoya. Off the top of my head I would say about @10% of the reviews complained about this aspect. I don't know how the other circular polarizers are made but since that complaint does not come up on my unscientific review of there might be a intrinsic problem in Hoya's contruction. I just wrote to Hoya making my complaint about my own particular problem. If they are serious about complaints I will get an answer. Bottom line, I would not buy this filter. I would also suggest that one reads the reviews to see if there are problems with other manufacturers. The filters were purchased and not a gift. I do mention other manufactures because it has some utility in decision making of a purchase.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter:
Quality of glass is OK but after 3 months of use, with extra care, the whole thing came apart out of the blue. I tried to mount it back on and the parts just won't attach. To the trash it goes !!!

Comments about Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter:
True to form, this filter delivers as with all the Hoya range in terms of quality of manufacture and outcome. The results are crisp (meaning quality is not affected by the 2 pieces of polarised glass) and the colours well-saturated and defined. The filter fits well and operates smoothly without drag or any roughness in circular travel. All told, a good, reliable piece of kit to work with.

Got this in the mail half way through a beach vacation for the 17-55mm lens on my Canon 60D. The improvements were remarkable...less glare on the water, deeper skies especially.

I don't like to deal with the haze and glare of the photos so for each lens I own I tried to keep a polarizer on it always. This product serves for its mission. I didn't have any problem with it.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter:
I bought one of these in a hurry as I needed it straight away for a job. I thought about spending the extra $30 on a B+W and should have gone with my instinct. The thing came apart the very same day. I lost the polarising glass somewhere on the street. It must have come apart while I was walking with my camera over my shoulder. I took what was left of the filter (a single glassless ring) back to the store where they exchanged it for another one (I couldn't get store credit apparently). I doubtfully accepted it. That filter popped apart while I was using it. The same day. I managed to put it back together but I do not trust it at all. Two filters, the same problem with both, and both after absolute minimal use. If I had read the reviews beforehand I would have discovered that this seems to be a common problem. Don't buy this filter.
